UNION SCHOOL HOUSE, #1

Teachers | Newspaper Clippings

Little's School House (aka- School House #1) appears in the minutes of the Charlestown School District as early as August 1841.  It may have been originally constructed prior to the Fall of 1839, when the public school system was begun.

On August 14, 1841 the Charlestown School Board met and agreed to lease the school house (Union) from John G. Wersler.

In 1863, there were reportedly 67 students enrolled at Union School House; and in 1864, 73 students.

The Charlestown School Board, in 1866, condemns a lot of ground on the property of Mr. Wersler, in order to erect a new school house there.  After visiting the schools of West Vincent township and meeting with their directors, the Directors of Charlestown decided to pattern the new school, at Union, after Paul's School (in W. Vincent twp.).  The building was to be 32 x 36 feet.

In August, 1867, the board awarded to, Thompson Davis and Jesse B. K. Young, the contract to erect the new school house at Union, in the amount of $1,670.

A new well, 46-1/2 feet deep, was dug here, c1887/88.

Due to the erection of the Charlestown Consolidated School, the Union School House was closed by November, 1925.  It was sold in December, 1927 for $350.
