Callensburg Centennial Celebration [1926]

Rhea’s Garage, Callensburg, Licking Twp., Clarion Co., PA. Notation from Clayton: I am assuming that this is an early business venture of Melvin T. Rhea who was married to Laura Sedgwick, sister of my grandfather, Edward J. Sedgwick. In later years Melvin expanded his business and became a Pennzoil distributor in Sligo under the name of M. T. Rhea and Sons -- he also had gas stations in different locations. |

Description by Clayton Harriger: Each of the young ladies had the name of one of the colonies on a sash worn over the right shoulder, or in some cases the name of the colony was on a sash going down from the neck line. The one (second from left) wearing Mass. appears to be my mother (Helen Laura Sedgwick). The possibility of her being there would be due to the fact that her grandparents, Calvin Wesley and Margaret Sedgwick, lived in Callensburg plus an uncle, Job, also. The float probably wouldn't qualify for the Rose Parade in Pasadena, but then, who cares, anyway? Someone did some work to adorn it and a number of young ladies were willing to participate, and obviously the community wanted to celebrate a noble heritage -- which is how it ought to be! |

Although Callensburg is not part of Piney Twp, there are many ties between the town and Piney Twp. Residents and I have chosen to include some Callensburg coverage as part of the area history. Photos courtesy of Clayton Harriger. |
