July 29, 1928 Oil City Derrick—SLIGO NEWS by Don Mahle — There will be a week end evangelistic and preachers' June meeting at the Sligo tabernacle beginning Thursday evening, June 28, at 7:30. The speaker for the evening, Rev. O.O. Ireland of California, Pa. Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock preacher's meeting. At 7:30 p.m. Rev. Basil Miller of Pittsburgh. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Warren Henry of Butler. Sunday forenoon and afternoon Rev. Russell Merriman of Freeport, Pa. The pastor, Rev. Mershimer desires a good turnout as the speakers are of the best. On July 8 Rev. Mershimer will begin tent meetings over near Turkey City. On July 11 Rev. Dr. Jones, district superintendent from Cleveland, will hold an evening meeting. Last week Rev. Mershimer attended general assembly of the Nazarene church at Columbus, Ohio. This assembly is held only once in four years and as this is the first one that has been his privilege to attend he felt that he was very much benefited by doing so. 5/9/1957 — Rev. and Mrs. Paul Dunlap, minister and wife of the Sligo Methodist Church and daughter Paulette took Mrs. Blanche Silvis and Mrs. Miriam Pierce and daughter, Jill, recently to the Clarion County Hymn Sing at East Brady. Mr. and Mrs. Claire Bracken also attended and were accompanied by Mrs. Lulu Larimer and Mrs. Orvis Larimer. A group from the local Nazarene Church was also represented. All rendered special numbers.
1/9/1958 Sligo Presbyterian Sunday School Officers Elected by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Rev. J. Lee Gormon, pastor of the Sligo Methodist Church, has offered the church hall to Rev. C.F. Hunt, pastor of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene, as a place to hold Sunday services during the time the Nazarene Church is being renovated. 7/6/1970 Church Elects Officers SLIGO - The following new officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene: Harold Rhodes, Sunday School superintendent; Joe Kriebel, assistant; Mrs. Pat Divins, president of Nazarene Young People Society; Mrs. Twila Williams, vice-president; Mrs. Rosalie Shirey, secretary; and Mrs. Sue Myers, treasurer. Trustees are: Rick Buzard, Woody Divins, Joe Kriebel; stewards are Mrs. Dorie Miller, Wanda Buzard, Bertha Wiseman, Betty Hetrick, Mrs. June Divins and Mrs. LuWanda Rhodes. Mrs. June Divins, president of the Nazarene World Missionary Society; Mrs. Mary Best, vice president; Betty Hetrick, secretary; Mrs. Dorie Miller, treasurer; Cheryl Nulph, study secretary; Mrs. Sally Kriebel, prayer and fasting secretary; Harold Rhodes, membership secretary; Sue Myers, other sheep secretary and Mrs. LuWanda Rhodes, box work secretary. Reports showed these facts for the past church year. Total giving will exceed $11,000; over 10 per cent of the money raised was given to missions. Budgets are all paid in full. Nearly $2,000 was spent on buildings and improvements. The Sunday School enrollment is 130 with an average attendance of 72. Sept 22, 1977 - Nazarene Zone Officers Elected Jim Barger of the Sligo church of the Nazarene has been appointed the Oil City Zone Coordinator for the year. At a zone organizational meeting at the Sligo Church Sept. 8, zone officers were elected. Larry Young of Knox and Barb Haylett of Franklin were elected assistant coordinators; Annette Bryant of the Sligo church, secretary; Cheryl Myers of Sligo, treasurer; Joyce Reedy of Knox, director of children's ministries (ages 4-11); Dave Carson of Oil City, director of youth ministries (ages 12-23); the Rev. Gary Smith of Knox, director of adult ministries (ages 23-up), and Joan Stewart of Knox, director of quizzing. Zone board members are Dixie Edwards of Titusville, Bonnie Morris of Franklin, Gloria Sulivan of St. Petersburg, Penny Luton of Oil City, Scott Mapes of Knox and Cheryl Nulph of Sligo. Carl Shirey of Sligo is the Olympic director. Churches involved in the Oil City Zone are the Nazarene Churches in Titusville, Franklin, St. Petersburg, Oil City, Knox, and Sligo. There will be a Nazarene Zone Council meeting at 6 p.m., Sept. 27, in Knox. Zone rallies have been planned as follows: Nov. 16, a missionary rally at the Oil City Church; March 10, 1978, a Christian Family Life Rally at the Sligo church with the Rev. 9/1977 - Nazarene (Sligo Boro) Emblem Contest Ed Myers of RD 2 Sligo, center, is the winning artist in the Sligo Borough Emblem Contest. His emblem will appear on the Sligo Boro Maps which are being printed as a project of the Sligo Church of the Nazarenes Teens. Sligo Boro Council selected the winning emblem. Presenting his prize, a wristwatch donated by Sligo Hardware (Dick McHenry), is Annette Bryant, Teen president of the Sligo church. At the left is Myers' wife, Cheryl, and daughter, Kim, and at the right is Jeff Shirey, former Teen president in whose term the Sligo Boro Map project was begun. Source: The Clarion News, 9/1977. (view image) Sligo Logo - The young people of the Nazarene will soon be going door to door in their community selling the new boro and county map. The maps will sell for $1 and are also available at the Sligo Hardware. They may be ordered by mail from Annette Bryant, RD1 Sligo, by enclosing $1.25, the price of the map plus the cost of mailing. The logo which appears on the map was drawn by Ed Myers of RD Sligo, a member of the church. His logo was chosen by Sligo Boro Council in a contest sponsored by the church youth.
