Licking Church History — The congregation was formed in 1803/1804 with the Rev. Mr. McGarraugh serving as the first pastor. The total number of communicants was 33. A meeting house was erected in 1808. Logs were used and were 25 feet in length. The roof was made of clapboards. The building was also used for a school and eventually after a larger meeting house was built, it was then used for a parsonage for the pastor and his family. Rev. Robert McGarrah is credited with beginning several early Presbyterian churches, including Licking. He was a missionary and the first pastor within the bounds of Clarion Presbytery From 1802 to 1837. He was ordained in the year 1806 at Thomas Brown's near Reidsburg.

Licking Church was first recognized as such in 1803. Stump Creek had been the previous and original name, as Clarion River was then known as Stump Creek. The REV. ROBERT McGARROUGH was the first officially licensed pastor of the congregation, receiving his appointment in June 1804. A church historical document states that, "he preached in anything but a church for four years." And, according to a Callensburg  newspaper article dated 1874, in coming to "this wilderness field" from Fayette County, "His wife and two of  his children road on one horse, all kitchen furniture was placed on another horse and the oldest son, John, was mounted on top of this."  By 1808, the total number of the congregation was 33, and a church building was  erected, which was also used for a school, and finally, became a parsonage. A second log structure with doubled dimensions was built in 1822. These two log meetinghouses were located a few feet southwest of the location of the present church building. During the ministry of the REV. JOHN CORE, in 1848, the first frame worship center was built. The third pastor to the congregation was REV. JOSEPH MATEER, who began his Curllsville ministry in 1854. Born in Ulster, Ireland, Mateer came to America in 1851. During his  tenure at the local church, he also served as an Army chaplain in the Civil War. Following his death in 1883, the pastor was buried in New Bethlehem, where his son, Robert had settled. In 1875, the Rev. DR. JAMES McCURDY became the pastor. For 30 years, he ministered to the Licking congregation, as well as the Presbyterian Church in West Millville (now Hawthorn). He compiled the first documents of the church in 1895. Two of his daughters, MARTHA (McCURDY) MORGAN and MAUDE (McCURDY) CURLL, helped compile the first published history of the church in honor of the congregation's 125th anniversary celebration in 1928. HARRY C. CRAIG, chorister and organist, also led the event. Declining membership caused the congregation to dissolve in the late 1990s. The first church that was organized was the Presbyterian.  The first pastor, the Rev. Robert McGarrah. When he first began to preach, I do not know, but it must have been early as 1803.  He was ordained in the year 1806 at Thomas Brown's near Reidsburg.  A word here with regard to that good and God-fearing man, highly educated and able in  prayer, yet, like Moses he was slow of speech, often taking him two or three hours to deliver a sermon.  He preached without notes, and with great earnestness-pleading with his hearers to forsake their sins, the error of their ways and turn to the Lord.  So earnest would he become at times that the great tears would roll from his eyes to the floor.  It was often said that he preached more effectively by his tears than by the power of his eloquence.  The first house that was erected for public worship was on land donated by Rev. Mr. McGarrah near where the Secedar Church now stands, in view of Mechanicsville, together with a burying ground, which was the only burial place for many miles around. Side by side, there rest great-grandparents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces, the first generation with a great number of the second.  The first elders that were elected were Tate Allison and Alexander Guthrie, Sr., both God-fearing men and an honor to the church.  The name of the church was called (New) Rehoboth, Rev. Mr. McGarrah also officiated at Licking church, now Churchville, and occasionally at a church called Concord in Perry township.  The elders of Licking church were:  John Henry, Thomas Watson and James Laughlin.
