during their terms as Civil War soldiers. Some below names mentioned within.

Miscellaneous Facts:
The civil war bore heavily upon the people of Clarion County, and the schools suffered in consequence from short terms and low teachers' salaries.  Hitherto a majority of the teachers were males, but many young men enlisted as soldiers, and for the first time in the history of our schools the female teachers outnumbered the males, and they have held a majority ever since.

There were no conscientious objectors to the Civil War in Clarion County.

In 1897, amidst loud objections from some county taxpayers, the Civil War Soldiers' Monument was placed in the park opposite the Clarion County Courthouse.  It was the first such memorial to be erected in Pennsylvania under a new law permitting use of county funds for this purpose.

Recruits of the 62nd PA Volunteers were recruited by Thomas B. Monks at Curllsville & Sligo on the 4th of July, 1861.  When Colonel Black was ready to receive recruits for the regiment, Monk's company was ready and available. The organization was taken in wagons to Kittanning, and from there was able to travel by rail to Pittsburgh. Company mustered in on 25 July 1861 in Lafayette Hall, Pittsburgh. Resigned 16 October 1862 on account of failing health. He was the son of a Methodist preacher and father of a physician. "After recovering his health he became a contractor, and later a merchant. Subsequently he was made cashier of the bank at Tidioute, Pa., and while occupying that position was appointed postmaster. He also served as deputy sheriff. Having studied civil engineering in his youth, he put his knowledge of that profession to use throughout his life. When death claimed him, he was a resident of Kansas City, Mo., dying from the results of a fall while he was superintending some work for which he had a contract." -- p. 953, Armstrong County, Pa., Her People, Past and Present, J.H. Beers & Co., 1914

Civil War Soldier Reunions: Read detailed accounts, speeches & addresses, etc.,  of the Reunions of the "Twin Regiments" 101st and 103rd PA Volunteer Infantry. Among our local soldiers in attendance during the 18th reunion held in Butler during 1896 were: T.J. Callen (Sligo), A.J. Reese (Piney) and Isaiah Reese (Piney).

NEWS: A LARGE ATTENDANCE OF VETERANS HAVE AN ENJOYABLE TIME (Clarion Democrat, Thursday, August 6, 1896) If it had not been for the little irregularities of the weather clerk no more successful occasion of the kind could occur than the reunion of the 155th Regt. Pa. Vet. Vols. at Clarion on the 29th and 30th of August. The wind, rain, and hail on the evening of the 29th was disastrous to the decorations which so profusely covered the business houses and nearly all of the private residences. The storm was quite a cool reception, but it was more than made up by the warm and enthusiastic greeting the citizens extended to the veterans. As stated in our last issue, most of the veterans arrived Thursday afternoon and evening, the 29th , but many came in on Friday, until 130 veterans were registered and assigned to quarters at the various hotels for entertainment. Following is a list by companies of the members of the regiment present:W.A. Craig, Sligo; John Griffith, Sligo; Elias Peters, Sligo; John Anderson, Sligo; Samuel Whitmore, Sligo; Amos Barto, Piney; D.R. Curll, Curllsville; James A. Myers, Curllsville; Daniel F. Conrad, Curllsville; William Forkum, Sligo; Lewis Hartman, Sligo; George B. Gourley, Sligo; John Mooney, Curllsville. View the entire list of attendees

Serenade by Veterans — On Friday morning the following veterans tendered a very enjoyable serenade in front of the "Star" office which was much appreciated by the large crowd: E.J. Freeman of Audobon, Iowa, of the 16th Illinois Regiment of Infantry, President National Association Civil War Musicians; George W. Friedley, Drum Major 125th Pennsylvania Infantry, novelty drummer, of Huntington, Pa.; James Low, of Sligo, Clarion county, Pa., Drum Major Ohio Department National Association Civil War Musician; Wm. H. Augur, Fern, Indiana, Fife Major National Association Civil War Musicians Association, and Jamee M. Donnelly of Altoona, Pa. Fifer of 210th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Mr. Friedely is a drummer of exceptional ability, as was demonstrated. Source: 7/9/1913 - Star and Sentinel, Gettysburg, PA.

Co. K was organized by Thompson Core at Curllsville, in August 1862. Aug. 26 the forty-two volunteers left Curllsville in wagons for Kittanning where they took train for Pittsburgh. After the company was stationed at Camp Howe, Capt. Core, A.C. Courson and Sergeant Brown returned to Clarion County to recruit the company up to its full quota. Returning to the field Sept 9 they were armed and thereafter known as Co. K. After a winter of maneuvering, the company on Apr. 28 marched to Chancellorsville where it took part in that terrible struggle. For heroic service Sergt. Brown was promoted to Lieutenant.  After this Co. K showed its valor on many fields. Lieut. Brown was promoted to Captain July 7, 1864, and on Oct. 27 with a detachment of 100 men, performed one of the most daring and successful exploits of the war when Gen. Meade(?) called for volunteers arid with Capt. Brown as leader they assaulted a position on the enemy's front line. Capt. Brown, having formed his men for the work just at dusk, in a drizzling rain, thrust aside the abattis [sic], drove in the pickets and scaled the ramparts, carrying a strong work and capturing four commissioned officers and more men than he had led to the encounter. For his bravery in this charge he was highly commended and breveted Major. The company was mustered out June 1, 1865. In 1912 in recognition of his gallant service. Capt. Brown was presented with a silver medal of honor by the United States government through congress, a beautiful tribute of honor and respect to the one who proved he was ready to give up his life for his country.

In the 1888 newspapers, veterans voting for Tippecanoe were recorded:

Republican Gazette, August 16, 1888
THE OLD VETERANS
Wm. Jones, of Piney township, sends us word that he voted for General Harrison in 1840 and will still continue to vote the same way as long as the party is for protection.
Hon. David MaClay, of Piney township, voted for old Tippecanoe in 1840 and will vote for the grandson this fall.
G.K. Magee, of Monroe township, aged 74 years, is another old veteran of 1840 who still continues strong in the faith.
John George, of Porter township, cast his first vote for General W.H. Harrison and will vote for his grand-son.
John McGarrah, of Toby township, is 86? years of age, and is another old veteran who hopes to be able to go to the polls to vote for Tippecanoe and Tyler too in 1840 and has not forgotten his first love.
William Stitt, of Toby township, whose Republicanism is A. No. 1, and who never misses an election, whether primary or general, is another voter who voted right in 1840 and will vote the same way this fall.
Samuel Winkett, of Toby township, although he did not vote for old Tippecanoe in 1840, says if the Lord spares his life until next November he will vote for his grand-son.
Mr. Jacob Smith, of Limestone township, writes on that he is 82 years of age and voted for General Harrison in 1840 and wants to keep the ball rolling.
Mr. J.L. Greenewalt, of Madison township, sends us word that he wants his name enrolled as one of the old veterans of 1840.

August 23, 1888 Republican Gazette
The Old Veterans
Mr. Jacob A. Conver, of Richland twp., writes that he is 72 years of age, and that he voted for Tippecanoe in 1840. If spared he will vote for young Tip next November.
Mr. Michael Jack, of Porter township, sends us word that he cast his first vote for General Harrison in 1840, and will vote for his grand-son, if spared. He also has two sons who will vote the same way.
Mr. J.J. Clark, of Highland township, is another of the old veterans who desires to be recorded as a Harrison man, first, last and always.
Mr. William Kelly, of Clarion borough, says he is not ashamed of his vote cast 48 years ago for Tippecanoe, and hopes to live long enough to vote for his grandson.
Mr. Samuel Baird, of Limestone township, writes us that he was a Democrat in 1840, but as he did not like Van Buren, the Democratic candidate, he did not vote for him. After that the tariff question came to be an important issue, and as he was a tariff man he joined the whigs, and after that the Republican party, and has voted with that party ever since. He is now 74 years old and confined to bed by sickness, but if his life is spared until the election, and his health will permit him to be taken to the polls, he will vote for Harrison and Morton.

August 30, 1888 Correspondence, Jeffersville, Amelia Co., VA (August 21, 1888)
Editor Gazette: I see you are collecting the names of the veterans of 1840. I was then a citizen of Clarion county and voted for Gen. W.H. Harrison. Circumstances require me to be here now, but if my life is spared until election day, I hope to cast my vote for the grandson of the good old General, and if it shall not be counted out I hope it will do more good than in Pennsylvania where it is not needed. I believe with a free ballot and an honest count, Virginia would go Republican. The thought comes to me that you are too young to remember, as I do, the deceptive Democratic battle cry of Polk, Dallas and Shunk, and the tariff of '42. Did it come? We got the P.D. and S. but the tariff of '42 was all knocked into (pl?), and with it went down the prosperity of our country. I hope to live long enough to cast one more vote for the grand old party. S.R. Travis, 78 years old.

Aug. 30, 1888 Republican Gazette
Mr. Samuel Anderson, of Madison township, is one of the veterans of 1840, who will vote for Harrison in 1888.

Republican Gazette, Dec. 13, 1888
Correspondence - Church, Pa., Dec. 11, 1888 - One of our oldest and most respectable citizens, Mr. Michael Turney, is a staunch republican. He is now 87 years of age and in good health. He voted for Harrison in '40 and walked to the polls and cast his vote for Benjamin Harrison, and thinks he may live to help elect the next President.

Republican Gazette, Nov. 8, 1888
Mr. Joseph Himes, the return judge from New Bethlehem, voted for "Tippecanoe" in 1840. This year his own vote and the votes of six sons, six grandsons, and one son-in-law, were all cast for Harrison and Morton. All honor to the Himes family.

Oct. 4, 1888 Republican Gazette
Correspondence - Mr. Daniel Saylor, of Sligo, sends us word that he is one of the old veterans who voted for old Tippecanoe in 1840, and if spared until November will vote for his grandson, as will also his four sons and one grandson.

Oct. 4, 1888 Republican Gazette
Mr. Geo. Latimore, of Porter township, is one of the veterans of 1840, and, at the time of the death of President Harrison was working in Huntingdon county on the canal and helped to carry the body of the dead President from the canal to the depot of the old Portage road. Mr. Latimore is still strong in the faith and will help to swell the great majority this fall.

Sept. 13, 1888 Republican Gazette
Perry township furnishes us with some more veterans of 1840 in the persons of Thomas Miller, Wm. Fuller, and Daniel Baker. They are all solid for young Tippecanoe.

FOX, HENRY BENJAMIN — THE MAN WHO MARCHED OFF TO WAR — Henry Benjamin Fox, of Curllsville, Pennsylvania, was a husband and father when he enlisted in Company I, 8th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 19, 1864. Like many early volunteers his term of enlistment was only 90 days. Henry returned home and was present when his daughter was born - but soon after he re-enlisted. This time he served in Company K. 148th Pennsylvania Infantry. Henry served throughout the war, not once leaving his regiment during these years of duty.   Henry Fox was discharged from federal service on June 1, 1865 and returned to his wife Mary Ellen unharmed. But that does not mean tragedy did not visit them. Henry's brother John N. Fox, who had served in the same regiment, was killed in action on August 15, 1864. And ironically, his two year-old daughter died the very next day. Henry and Mary Ellen operated an inn in New Bethlehem and had six more children. Mary Ellen died on February 25, 1902 and Henry died on September 19, 1917.  (view photos of Henry & Mary Ellen)

KEELEY, FRANCIS PATTON ANDERSON — born in 1820 near Sligo Furnace was in the Civil War and honorably discharged near Belle Plains, Virginia while on their march to Gettysburg.  He enlisted at Strattonville and was in the 149th Infantry, Company H.  His name does not show on the lists of pensioners nor on the lists of survivors.  He did draw a pension of $12 a month and died in 1902 at the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Marion, Indiana.  He is buried in the National Cemetery in Marion and the Cemetery Director recently sent me a picture of my great, great grandfather’s tombstone. I know there must be a great many “missing” soldiers from this era and I was wondering if this information would be of interest to you.  Thank you for your time. LANGLEY, JOHN — Lincoln guards of the 150th PA, Co K.  — John Langley wrote to his future wife, Maggie McAuley. You might be interested in this letter's transcript as it is written about 15 days after the Lincoln assassination, and he gives his feelings on that event.  Here is the text of John Langley's letter typed as accurately as possible with all words and marks as written in the original. Washington D.C. April 29th/64(5) My Dear friend Maggie, Good afternoon. Hope I find you well & enjoying life tip top. This is a lovely day in this the Sunny South, The trees are green, Peaches are about as large as peas, grass is 5 or Six inches high. & the weather warm & Sultry. the roads are very dusty here. & everything coming forward fast. We are glad to Sit in the Shade here now when ever we have the opportunity. Our Barracks are in the Park & allmost covered with trees. I think It's a real pretty place. Wish you could be here & see it. I'm Shure you would like it. Well you wished me to tell you if any of us were with the President at the Theater on that eventful night. We were not. We never went with him when he went away, our duty is & has been to guard the President when at home, & our guard was never taken off for one moment since we came here on the 8th of Sept.1862 The President has a Co of Cavelry whoes duty it is to escort him when traveling, but he never took any one with him to the Theater, or to Church. It was a cruel and foul murder. & would to God Some of us had been with him that night. Then The accursed Traitor had not dared to to molest President Lincoln, or if he had I think he would have failed in the attempt. He too now is dead, Shot through the head, ushered into the presence of his maker Sudenly, there to meet the penalty of his crime. How soon he has followed his victim, but how different there lives were. The one all goodness patience & love The other a very Demon on earth. The one died a Martyr to his country. to Justice liberty & mercy. The other a Traitor, died the villian he was with a curs & a lie in his mouth, He has made his name a disgrce, to be handed down from Generation to generation while time shall last as a hissing & a by-word. & Oh! what must be the feelings of his aged Mother. But enough on this Subject. I certainly should be pleased to make you a visit, Some time & if I can when I get home I Shall except your invitation to call on you Some time. I often have business down the river & am in Franklin once or Twice every year, & if I knew where to go I Shurely shall visit Reimersburgh & see my friend Maggie once at least, but really I do not know where it is, perhaps you may see fit to tell me Some time, where from Franklin your home is, I wrote you a letter only a few days Since, So please exerise a Short one this time. My Friend Clark wishes to send a line in this, & I know no good reason why he Shouldent, excuse all errors. Write Soon. & except the best wishes of your Strange friend for you & yours Miss McAuley. Yours Truly, John Langley.  [John Langley was mustered out with his company as a Sergeant on June 15, 1865, less than two months after writing this letter. He and Margaret (Maggie) McAuley were subsequently married in Rimersburg, PA on February 22, 1866 by her father, The Rev. John McAuley. They resided in Rimersburg and Sligo, PA, living a quiet and peaceful life. John died January 10, 1905 and Margaret on January 12, 1917, both at age 76, leaving no known descendants.] Biography and photo courtesy of Carolyn Hays Raham  (view photo of John Langley)
