3/7/1957 Sligo Lions Club Meets on Tuesday (Derrick, Naomi Summerville) SLIGO - The oldest member of the Sligo Lions Club, Elmer E. Weeter, 82, was present for the regular meeting held Tuesday evening in Rosie's Restaurant. The meeting, in charge of Guy Hawk, began with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. The District Governor from Anita, scheduled to attend the meeting Tuesday evening was unable to be present. A Lions spokesman stated he will be in attendance at the next regular meeting Tuesday, March 19. An Easter rabbit, to be raffled off by the Lions as a money-making project, was displayed at the meeting. A discussion was held by the group to take over the pool at Claude Rhea's property as a community pool. Further discussion on this project will be held at future meetings. There were 19 present. It was announced that Sligo will send representatives to the zone meeting to be held in New Bethlehem next Tuesday, March 12. Transcribed by Pamela Myers-Grewell.
8/4/1969 New Officers Are Installed by Sligo Lions SLIGO - The Lions club of Sligo installed new officers at their regular meeting. Officers installed were as follows: President, James Grant, Sr.; first vice president, Carl Henry; second vice president, Ralph Love; third vice president, Ray McDowell; secretary, Carl Henry; lion tamer, Larry Henry; tail twister, Jack Shirey and directors, Charlie Shirey and Jim Dunlap. It was announced that tickets have arrived for a new project and will soon be available. The next meeting will be August 6.
12/19/1969 Lions Club Sponsors Yule Contest SLIGO - A Christmas lighting contest is being sponsored by the Sligo Lions Club for the Sligo area. Prizes will be awarded for the best lighting display for the holiday season. First prize will be a lamp, donated by the West Penn Power Company, with other prizes being monetary awards. The judge will be held Sunday, beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing until 10 p.m. Lights should be burning and all decorations completed prior to this time. At the recent meeting of the Sligo Lions Club, 14 members and 7 guests from the Baden Lions Club were present. The club is presently considering the purchase of chairs for the Sligo Area Recreational Center. Plans were also finalized for the distributing of Christmas baskets to needy families in the area.
7/20/1971 Lions Install New Officers SLIGO - New officers were installed by the Sligo Lions Club at a meeting held recently in Marie's Restaurant in Sligo. Ray McDowell was installed as king lion and other officers installed were: Carl McCall, first vice; Ralph Love, second vice; Fred Myers, third vice; Fred Myers, secretary; Russell Heeter, treasurer; Guy Hawk, tail twister; Paul Meier, lion tamer; and James Hoover, Guy Hawk and Thomas Johnston, Sr. directors. Further discussion was held concerning the erection of bleachers at the Madison Street ballfield. Russell Heeter, chairman, advised he would have more definite information at the next regular meeting.
9/28/1971 Sligo Lions Project Set SLIGO - The Sligo Lions Club has announced that tickets for the project now in progress are available from any club member. It was also reported that brooms have been ordered for selling in the Sligo Area. First vice - president, Carl McCall, conducted the business meeting, attended by 11 members. A discussion was held concerning a drive for new members. It was noted that the Lions are a non-profit organization and work for the benefit of the community and surrounding areas. Members are asked to attend the next meeting on October 5 and bring anyone wishing to become a member. (SD). Derrick. |
