CLARION COUNTY MARRIAGE ANNOUNCEMENTS

These marriages are from the Clarion Democrat with additions from the Republican-Gazette. For source information any entries not encoded RG (Republican-Gazette) or CR (Clarion Republican) are from the Clarion Democrat.

While these transcriptions probably represent a hefty majority of marriages in Clarion county for the years represented they certainly do not represent the total number of marriages.  There are four primary reasons for this.  First, the editors depended on the marriage officials to provide them with the information so the accuracy and amount depended on these officials.  Secondly, there were numerous missing issues and a lot of unreadable copy.  Thirdly, many brides and grooms preferred not to have their nuptials published. Lastly, publishing marriages was not as big a deal as it is today.

The names are represented as nearly as possible as they were printed (although there were obvious errors corrected during the transcription).  The reader will note that there are many errors in name spellings, especially with Germanic names, as compared to those in use today.  Penmanship and literacy are probably two of the reasons.

Some of the transcripts were abridged from more lengthy announcements.  In addition, where needed information in Italics were added by the transcriber.

We encourage you to check with the section on Marriage Licenses as it not only lists many marriages that likely took place and were not published but it often gives alternate name spellings.

This initial posting contains a few announcements from the years 1868 and 1869. However, the bulk of the information comes from the years 1877 through 1893 (1870 – 1876 not available). It is our intent to add to these in the next few months with marriage announcements from later years so check back from time to time.

Amended Jan. 2012 to include East Brady Review (EBR)
