CALLEN WILLIAM ELSMORE -- Last Saturday night as William Callen, engineer, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Callen, was bringing a freight train down the Sligo Branch and was on a heavy down grade near Lawsonham, where the Branch intersects with the Low Grade division, he lost control of the train by reason of the fact that the air brakes would not work, and it run off. He sent his fireman back along the train to help set the brakes on the cars, but it seems the run-away train attained such speed that nothing could be done to stop it. At a sharp curve the engine swung over off the track and nineteen cars followed and all piled up in an awful wreck. The engine after running along on the roadbed and tearing up the track for about forty feet or more, ran off of the bed and turned almost upside down, pinning Mr. Callen under it, and the escaping steam scalded him in a frightful manner. His legs were crushed and his head was badly injured and crushed, while the steam had burned out his eyes and boiled parts of his flesh from his face and head and body. It took from the time of the accident, shortly after midnight, to 8 o'clock the next morning to release his body from the wreck. The train, of course, was a complete wreck, and the fireman and other men on the train were injured, but we are informed, only slightly. No stronger commendation of his character could be given than to use the words of a neighbor who knew him from the time he was a boy. He said: "W. Colwell always favored everything that was right and opposed everything that was wrong." He was a modest, industrious and upright citizen, always interested in the well-being of his own community and of the country at large. COLWELL, ELMIRA CYNTHIA (ALBERT) — Elmira Cynthia Colwell, nee Albert, wife of Porter Colwell, died at her home on Madison Street, Sligo, Pa., April 13th, after a long illness. Deceased was born March 17, 1845 and married Porter Colwell June 5, 1861, to whom were born nine children, four sons and five daughters, all of whom are living to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. Her disease baffled the skill of the best physicians and at last it became apparent that she must die. Conscious to the fact, she arranged all the details of her funeral and "set her house in order" with a calmness and foresight that was remarkable. The day before she died she called her loved ones to her bedside to say goodbye, lest when the final hour come she might not be able. With a farewell to each one, a request to meet her in heaven and a last message to her absent son who was not able to reach the bedside before she died, she calmly awaited the inevitable hour, and when it came she fell "asleep in Jesus like one who wraps the drapery of couch about her and lies down to pleasant dreams." She was a member of the M.E. church and the funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E.N. Askey, assisted by Rev. Joel Smith, of Rimersburg. The text was one of her own selection and the hymns sung "Asleep in Jesus," "My Jesus I Love Thee", "Thou Thinkest Lord of Me," were among her favorites. The flowers upon her casket were profuse and beatufiul. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Sligo. Source: Clarion Democrat, April 22, 1897 (Sligo News Item)

CONNER, DOUGLAS KEITH — CRASH KILLS 1, INJURES 2 -- A Clarion County truck driver was killed and his wife and daughter were injured in a crash early yesterday in Braxton County, W.Va., state police there said. Douglas Conner, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes after the 3:25 a.m. accident, troopers said. Conner's wife, Rini Conner, and their daughter, Laura, 6, all of Sligo , were driving with him at the time of the accident. Rini and Laura Conner were taken to Braxton County Hospital and transferred to a hospital in Charleston, W.Va. Their conditions were not available yesterday. Conner, a driver for the last 20 years for Burns Farms in Clarion County, had been hauling about 5,000 gallons of motor oil and transmission destined for Danville, Va., said a spokesman at Burns. State police said Conner lost control of the rig and that it slammed into a guide rail, causing the truck to jackknife and flip over. The tractor separated from the trailer as the rig went off the west side of the road, troopers said. The tank was punctured and the contents spilled into Salt Lick Creek, which leads into the Little Kanawha River. Cleanup crews were at the scene to contain the spill, police said. Scott Benson Conrad was born near Pittsburgh, Pa. on November 25, 1872 and was married to Miss Kate Wiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Wiser, his childhood sweetheart, who formerly lived in Curllsville, in 1899. To this union were born three children, one of whom, Mary Eleanor, 3 years old, still lives. CORBETT, CARRIE VIENNA (SIVERLING) — The people of Monroe Township were very much saddened last Thursday morning when the message came that Mrs. John A. Corbett had died in the hospital in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Corbett had been ailing for some time from goiter. At times she seemed better and there seemed strong hopes that she would regain her former good health. But despite her careful nursing and medical treatments the malady proved fatal. Carrie Vienna Siverling, daughter of Conrad Siverling, was born June 4, 1876, in Monroe township, and passed away December 10, 1925. On October 11, 1893, she was united in marriage to John A. Corbett also of Monroe township. Although the death of this dear one has caused a vacant chair in the family circle that never can be filled by one so loving, kind and true and no longer visible in this world, yet she lives and will continue to live in the hearts of those who loved her. At an early age she connected herself with the St. John's Lutheran Church at Churchville and she remained in that faith until death. She is survived by her husband and two children: Miss Sarah at home, and Merrill A., a student in the Sligo High School. One son Charles preceded her in death during the World War on Oct. 17, 1918. His body was never found. One brother, Bird Siverling, also survives, besides a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon at the late home in Monroe township and were very largely attended, which attested the love and respect of the life which had been closed. Rev. Holter spoke words of comfort and appreciation. Interment in the Churchville Cemetery. Source: Clarion Democrat (12/17/1925)
