GATHERS, MARY ANNA (KRAUSS) "Killed By Lightning" -Nothing has happened for a long time that so shocked the people of this community as the announcement that Mrs. Emery L. Gathers was killed by lightning Wednesday evening, August 2, 1922, and the expressions of sorrow were universal. Mr. and Mrs. Gathers had just completed milking their two cows and Mrs. Gathers took the milk to the cellar to separate it and put it away and Mr. Gathers went to the garage to attend to something about their car as they were talking of going out that evening. Almost out of a clear sky there was a sharp crash of thunder and a bolt of lightning struck the telephone pole in front of the house and the electricity followed the wire into the house and finally, after seeming to be in all parts of the house, found its way to the cellar and Mrs. Gathers received the shock, killing her instantly. She was not marked in any way except a small spot on the side of her face or forehead. Her daughter, Lena Ruth, who was standing by the sewing machine, had a mark on her limb from the lightning. But what a calamity! What a disaster! One moment a happy home, the next a broken home. How the heart of the entire community was stirred in sympathy for those who sustained the loss. Mrs. Mary Anna Gathers was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Krauss and was born Sept. 15, 1869 in Piney township, Clarion county. She was united in marriage to Emery L. Gathers, Oct. 15, 1891, in Shippenville, Pa. Besides her husband she is survived by the following children: Glenn E. Gathers, Reidsburg; Miss Alice Gathers, teacher in New Kensington schools, and Miss Lena Ruth Gathers, at home. She also leaves two grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Chas. J. Krauss, Piney township; Mrs. H. H. Tice, Clarion; Mrs. N. E. Thompson, Mrs. H. C. Rhea, Mrs. C. W. Kemerer, all of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. L. C. Mates, Philadelphia. One brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Gathers was a noble spirited, fine Christian woman and held the love and esteem of all who knew her by reason of the graces and beautiful characteristics of her life which shone out in thought, word and deed. Her life was indeed a most exemplary one. Then, too, she was a model homemaker and was queen of a loving and lovely home. She was associated with the Zion Baptist Church of Reidsburg, and her funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 5th, by Rev. Wm. Wheeler, and the interment was made in the Reidsburg cemetery. GATHERS, SAMUEL ROSS With very great sorrow the people of Clarion learned of the death of S. Ross Gathers, a long time well known and highly respected citizen of Clarion, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Riley Allen, on Thursday, February 12, 1925, at Bridgeton, N. J., at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 14 days. Mr. Gathers was born in Piney township, Clarion county, in 1844, the son of Henry and Mary Gathers, and was one of a large family of children, of whom he was the last living. He grew to manhood at the place of his birth. He became one of the most expert teamsters in all this section of country and it was said of him that he could drive his team farther, haul heavier loads and keep his team in better condition than most any other teamster here at the time. He was always kind to and careful of his horses. This was typical of the man -- he was always kind to his family and friends and considerate of others at all times.  Mr. Gathers was a loyal supporter of the Union during the Civil War, and was a member of Co. H, 155th Reg. Penna. Vols. in which he served with great devotion and valor, being discharged at the conclusion of the war in June 1865. He was united in marriage with Miss Julina C. Finefrock, daughter of Jacob and Esther Finefrock, who preceded him in death thirteen years ago. To their union were born ten children, seven of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Mary Allison, Coverdale; Mrs. Elizabeth Cropp, Franklin; Mrs. Eva Ensley, Connellsville; Harry Gathers, Sligo; Mrs. Verna Allen, Bridgeton, N.J.; Mrs. Sella Sweet, New Kensington, and Marshall Gathers, W.VA. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. In 1923 Mr. Gathers met with an automobile accident in which he had his left hip badly damaged, the injury extending over to the backbone. From this injury he never recovered, and undoubtedly his death was hastened by it. His body was brought to Clarion and taken to the home of his nephew, Henry M. Gathers, 136 Grand Ave., where the funeral was held last Sunday afternoon Feb. 15th, the Rev. C. J. Warner of the First Methodist Church, of which the deceased had been a member for many years, conducted the services and the interment was made in the Clarion cemetery. GATHERS, SARAH (SWITZER) — Mrs. Sarah Switzer Gathers was born March 11, 1854 at Callensburg, Clarion County, Pa. As her parents both died when she was quite small, she was raised by Ross Corbett, the father of the great missionary, Rev. Hunter Corbett, of China. She was married to Levi A. Gathers September 15, 1881 at the home of R. M. Corbett, Leatherwood, Pa. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gathers went west, locating at Drexel, Mo. and living in or near that place for about 20 years. The rest of her life was spent at various places, the last six years on their farm near Neal, Kansas where she died November 12, 1908. She leaves to mourn their loss her husband and three sons Frank, Merle and George, also a daughter-in-law and little granddaughter, the wife and childe of the oldest son, Frank, of Canadian, Tex. The children were all with her and ministered to her every want so far as mortal could. It was a great comfort to her to have them near. Besides her family she leaves a host of friends to whom she was very dear and whom she loved with all her heart. They came from far and near with loving sympathy, longing to ease her pain and learning lessons of Christian patience from her. She joined the Presbyterian church when only 13 years of age and has been an earnest faithful member of the same ever since and died putting her trust in Him "who giveth his beloved sleep." GIRTS, JACK FIRST DAY OF HUNTINGJack Girts, Aged 12, Loses Life While Hunting With His Father in Leisure Run. An accident that caused profound sorrow in this community happened Tuesday morning on the Herman farm on Leisure Run, when Edward Girts accidentally shot his little son, killing him instantly. The father and son had gone into the woods to shoot rabbits. The son had preceded his father and was kneeling down in the brush. His father saw a rabbit and drawing his gun pulled the trigger just as his son raised up and the shot entered the side of the boy's head killing him instantly. Crazed with grief, the father tenderly took the little fellow in his arms and carried him to the home of his grandfather, Morgan Myers, and Undertaker Reitz of New Bethlehem was notified of the accident and went immediately to the home and brought the body to his mortuary where it was prepared for burial and then taken to his late home. Mr. Reitz before going to the home of Mr. Myers notified the county coroner of the accident but was told that it was not necessary under the circumstances to hold an inquest. The parents of the unfortunate lad are almost distracted and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to them in their sad bereavement. Jack Morgan Girts was born in Porter township on February 12th, 1920 and was aged 12 years, 8 months and 19 days at the time of his death, November 1, 1932. He was a son of Edward and Edith Girts and leaves to mourn their loss his parents, two brothers and sisters, namely, James, William, June and Rose, all at home. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2:30 and will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Renwick; after which interment under the direction of S.F. Reitz will be made in the Frogtown cemetery. The Leader-Vindicator in this case extends deepest sympathy to the sorrowing parents.
