HEETER, CARL MEL — George J. Heeter and Carl M. Heeter -- Believing in the future of Clarion County, Carl and George Heeter, who operate Heeter Lumber Co., with branches in Sligo, Rimersburg and New Bethlehem, represent the third generation of a family engaged in handling lumber and related items. They now have sons continuing the same work. George Heeter was born October 21, 1906 at Callensburg, the son of William Melvin and Zoe Belle Over Heeter. His brother Carl was born in Sligo, October 22, 1911. Their grandfather, George Washington Heeter, operated a sawmill in Callensburg as did their father. Father and grandfather operated a boat scaffold in Callensburg where they were known as boat builders, floating lumber down the Clarion River to the Allegheny where it was then unloaded. The boats were reloaded with coal and piloted onto the Mississippi for sale in New Orleans. The boats were built and loaded in the winter and were taken down river in flood stage in the spring. William M. Heeter was also a pilot on the Clarion River, known as a creek pilot. Those on the Allegheny and Mississippi were called River Pilots. In 1928, after graduation from Sligo High School and Duff’s Iron City College, George entered into a partner ship with his father, continuing until the latter’s death in 1938. Carl, also a Sligo High School graduate and an alumnus of Washington and Jefferson College, entered the business in 1932. In 1938 the brothers opened an outlet in Rimersburg and a third establishment in New Bethlehem in 1953. At that time they added a Reddi-Mix Concrete plant to their lumber interests with outlets at New Bethlehem and Sligo in 1963. They also sell heavy hardware as well as other building supplies. They have roots in this county on both sides of the family. The Overs, their mother’s parents, had been lifetime farmers in Licking Township. In 1932 George was married to Lepha Leola Logue and they have one son, Lyle Melvin, born August 18, 1937. He was graduated from Allegheny College at Meadville and attended Tulane University in New Orleans. He was granted a Masters Degree at New York University. He has been employed in New York by a publishing company and has furthered his education by living for a year in France and Italy. Carl is married to the former Alma Mary Craig and they have two children. Rodney, born March 25, 1937, is a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. and now operates the Heeter business in Sligo and Rachel Heeter, born November 11, 1942, a recent graduate of Indiana State College who is prepared for a career in teaching business subjects in high school. Heeter, 78, of Sligo, owner of Heeter Lumber Company which operates businesses in Sligo, Rimersburg and New Bethlehem, died in an explosion that occurred in a small tool shed at his summer home along the Allegheny River at West Monterey at about 8 a.m. Monday July 24. State police are investigating the fire. Trooper David Spoharski reports the "fire appears accidental in nature. It appears the victim was in a shed which contained gasoline when he struck a spark and ignited the fumes; the ensuing explosion killing the victim." Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department members were dispatched to the scene by the Clarion county Emergency Control Center (9-1-1), at about 8 a.m. Monday with a neighbor reported the incident that occurred along the Allegheny River, about 1/2 mile upstream toward Parker from West Monterey. Reports indicate firemen could do little except contain the blaze to the shed where Mr. Heeter's body was discovered inside the building. Clarion County Coroner Rick Goble, summoned to the scene at 8:30 a.m. Monday, says Mr. Heeter "was in a little tool shed area mixing gasoline when it ignited and there was an explosion... He was a smoker...We're speculation, but a cigarette may have caused it (fire/explosion)." The coroner ruled Mr. Heeter's death was an accident caused by burn trauma. Carl M. Heeter was born October 22, 1911, in Sligo, a son of the late William and Zoe Belle (over) Heeter. He married the former Alma Craig on May 29, 1936. She died on March 29, 1988. HEETER, GEORGE JAMES — George J. HEETER, LINDA LUCY — This entire community was greatly shocked when the word reached Clarion last Friday, January 13, 1922, that Miss Linnie Heeter, daughter of the late county treasurer, G.W. Heeter and his wife, formerly of Clarion but now of Sligo, had died suddenly that morning without warning, her heart giving away under an attack of neuralgia. It seems that about a year ago, on account of the disturbance of her health, Miss Heeter had her tonsils removed, but while that gave temporary relief, she did not gain a rugged condition of health and recent indications of impaired vitality appeared in various ways. And yet she was able to be around about as usual and was recently in Clarion on business. On last Friday morning on arising from rest as usual she went to the bath room when she was heard to fall, and when her mother went to her, her spirit had left the body and had gone to abide in the eternal world. Miss Heeter was a lady of culture refinement and delightful personality as well as being a most lovable character. She was gracious, courteous and kindly in disposition and people loved her because of her fine spirit toward all. She was born January 3, 1876 in Licking township where she resided all of the early part of her life, and where she taught school a couple of years, before her father was elected county treasurer and established their home in Clarion about 1902 or 1903. After the death of her father, she and her mother resided here until last July, when they removed to Sligo. Miss Heeter was a fine Christian lady and was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years, at Callensburg, Clarion, and at Sligo. She is survived by her mother, one brother, Melvin Heeter, of Sligo, and one sister, Mrs. W.G. McClure, of Alva, Oklahoma. The funeral was held last Tuesday the services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. Holden, and the interment was made in the family lot in the Callensburg cemetery. Source: Tom Heeter.

Divins, died at her late home in Sligo this county, Thursday, August 8,1918 at 5:30 p.m. She was born December 10, 1844 and was aged 72 years, 7 months and 28 days. She had been a constant sufferer from gall stones for the past two years, but did not take to her bed until Tuesday, August 6, and from that time on she suffered terribly until she died. Not only has the family lost a loving mother but the community has lost a faithful friend and neighbor. She was always ready to lend a helping hand and give a word of cheer to everyone that she met in life. Her three daughters were with her when she passed into that blessed sleep that knows no waking. She was ready to go and meet her Saviour. She leaves to mourn their loss two sons and three daughters: John J., of Johnsonburg; Arthur A., of Pittsburgh; Mrs. F.E. Hamm, Brinkerton; Mrs. W.E. Callen, Sligo, and Miss Mary, at home, who was her constant help and companion. One son preceded her to the future world some years ago. Two brothers, Thomas Divins, Brinkerton, and Curtis, of Johnsonburg, and twelve grandchildren also survive her. At an early age she confessed Christ and united with the Leatherwood Baptist Church, of which she had been a faithful member all of the remainder of her life. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Will Divins, Frank Divins, and wife, DuBois; T .E. Divins, Turtle Creek; Mrs. John Henry and children and Wm. Van Camp, Johnsonburg; Bert Miller, wife and children. August 15, 1918 Clarion Democrat.
