McCLELLAND, CHARLES B. (and wife, Grace Viola (Clark) (McClelland) Pandolfino)
McCLELLAND, CLYDE CLARK — In his 88 years, Clyde C. McClelland left Western Pennsylvania for only two extended periods, and only to serve his country. Mr. McClelland, who served with a tank destroyer unit during World War II and was an engineer for the space program at Cape Canaveral for 15 years, died from complications of viral pneumonia Saturday in the VA Medical Center in Aspinwall. Mr. McClelland was born in Sligo, Clarion County. His father died when he was in his early teens, so Mr. McClelland moved with his mother, Grace, and sister, Lois, to the North Hills, near where his mother worked for Singer Sewing Machine Co. After he graduated from high school, Mr. McClelland worked for Pittsburgh Railways, predecessor of the Port Authority, until he enlisted in the Army in 1943. He served in France until 1945. He was part of a tank destroyer unit that attacked German vehicles, a task his son Clark compared to "a rabbit hunting a tiger." During the Battle of the Bulge, Mr. McClelland, a technical sergeant, was caught behind enemy lines. He was later attached to Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army. He came under fire a number of times and suffered back injuries that left him with a permanent disability. He underwent surgery in Europe and was hospitalized for two six-month periods. Although he was not decorated at the time, his family is attempting to see to it he is awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star posthumously. After returning to his family in Pittsburgh and working at Pittsburgh Railways for another 10 years, Mr. McClelland decided he wanted to participate in the still-embryonic space program and moved his family to Cape Canaveral, Fla. Initially, he worked on a team that fueled rockets and spacecraft. Later he did work in air-conditioning and environmental control there. His sons, Clark and Robert L., also worked on the space program. Around 1970, Mr. McClelland and his wife, Elizabeth, returned to Pennsylvania, moving first to Mount Troy and then to McCandless. Mr. McClelland worked for the U.S. Postal Service here and retired in the mid-1980s. After years of helping others fly, Mr. McClelland learned to pilot a seaplane after retiring. He had wanted to fly during World War II, but was disqualified because he was colorblind, his son Clark said. The Rimersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct a funeral for Mr. McClelland at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Sligo Cemetery. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - July 13, 2001

McEWEN, WILLIAM C. — NEW BETHLEHEM MAN, KNOWN HERE, MET TRAGIC DEATH — W. McEwen, 70, When His Coupe Crashed into Passenger Train; Causing Instant Death; Sold Farm Machinery. W.C. McEwen, aged 70 years, highly respected resident of New Bethlehem, was instantly killed at 9 o'clock yesterday morning when a coupe which he was driving crashed into a passenger train at the Penn street crossing in New Bethlehem. The crossing at which the accident occurred is that adjoining the Keck garage and is an especially dangerous one. Mr. McEwan evidently did not see the approaching train or became confused for he drove his car into the pilot of the locomotive. The car was hurled a considerable distance and Mr. McEwan was killed instantly. The machine was turned completely around and was practically demolished in the crash. Mr. McEwan was thrown out and was dead when picked up. His skull was fractured at the base of the brain and it was evident that death had occurred instantly. Aside from the injury on the head and a cut over the right eye, the body was not marked. The crossing on which the accident occurred is located a block west of the depot and at the time the train was slowing down to stop at that point. An examination of the signal lights in operation at the crossing was made immediately after the crash nd it was found that the lights were working properly. It is therefore surmised that either the brakes of Mr. McEwan's car failed to work or else his mind was pre-occupied and he failed to notice the lights warning of the coming of the train as he approached the crossing. The coupe was so badly wrecked that it was impossible to determine the condition of the brakes. The deceased was well known and greatly esteemed through this section. He had sold farm machinery in this section of the state and had visited Indiana frequently. Mr. McEwan was engaged in the hardware, motor sales and real estate business in New Bethlehem.
