SALIZZONI, SAMUEL S. -- Samuel S. Salizzoni Sr., 84, of Huey, died at 6:55 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Kittanning. Born Jan. 14, 1918, in the Village of Dutch Hill, he was a son of Paul and Anastasia Develli Salizzoni. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Salizzoni was a coal miner all of his life and retired in 1980 from Republic Steel's Newfield Mine after 43 years of service. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Huey. Mr. Salizzoni was a member of the Sligo Sportsmen's Club and the United Mine Workers of America, Local No. 6132, District No. 5, in Belle Vernon. He was married April 16, 1938, to the former Maxine Brown, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Samuel Jr. and Linda Salizzoni of Sligo and Jackson and Donna Salizzoni of Huey; one daughter and her husband, Kathy and Robert Stitt of Huey; the following grandchildren and their spouses, Susie and Don Smith of Middlebourne, W.Va., Diane and Don Kahle of Glenwood, Colo., Darla and Dan Beary of Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, Sheila and Daryll Schiberl of Emlenton; Patti and Jeff Rainey of Sligo, Shawna and Russ Corle, Brad and Amanda Salizzoni, and Rebecca Stitt, all of Huey; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also is survived by a brother, Jack Salizzoni of Rimersburg. In addition to his parents, Mr. Salizzoni was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Labino; four brothers, Virgil Salizzoni, Pete Salizzoni, Paul Salizzoni and Louie Salizzoni; and one great-grandson, Zachary Schiberl. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Goughler, pastor of the Church of God of Prophecy at New Athens, officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarview Memorial Park near Strattanville. SALIZZONI, VIRGIL — Virgil Salizzoni, 73, of 1915 Huey Road, Rimersburg, (Huey), died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh following an illness. Born April 18, 1933, in Huey, he was the son of Virgil and Joyce Bobbert Salizzoni. He served stateside with the Army Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Salizzoni was married on Dec. 27, 1957, at Associate Presbyterian Church in Rimersburg to the former Lora "Poppy" Wagner, and she survives. He worked for 30 years at Joy Manufacturing in Franklin and retired in 1995 from the final assembly division. Mr. Salizzoni was affiliated with the Baker Street Church of God in Rimersburg and was a member of the Shearer-Shick American Legion post in Rimersburg and the International Association of Machinists. In addition to his wife, Mr. Salizzoni is survived by two daughters, Debbie Salizzoni of Strattanville and Lori Miller and her husband, Tom, of Knox; two sons, David Salizzoni and his wife, Carla, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Randy Salizzoni of Buffalo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Jake Salizzoni, Anna Salizzoni, Kelsey McCall, Kyle McCall, Shane Miller, Ryan Salizzoni, Sarah Salizzoni, Nichol Salizzoni and Taylor Salizzoni; and five great-grandchildren, Cheyanne Howell, Ryan Salizzoni Jr., Sierra Salizzoni, Kacie Williams and Malcolm Hummel IV. Also surviving is a sister, Betty Joan Anthony, and two brothers, Walter Salizzoni and his wife, Marsha, and William Salizzoni and his wife, Shirley, all of Huey; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Thomas Anthony Sr. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Kennedy, pastor of the Baker Street Church of God, officiating. SALYARDS, SAMUEL P. — Samuel P. Salyards, a prominent citizen of Sligo, died at his home in that place early last Friday morning July 25, 1913 from injuries received about the first of July by falling from a wagon on which he was riding. It seems he was sitting at the rear end of the wagon when the horses made a sudden movement forward and he lost his balance falling backward out of the wagon and alighting on his head. On examination it was discovered that he had broken his neck. Everything possible was done for him and his life was prolonged until last Friday, but it was not possible for him to survive. Mr. Salyards was about 60 years of age and leaves his wife and five children, viz: Mrs. Guy Coleman and Prima Logue, Sligo; Mrs. Frank Bashline, Ashtabula, O., Mead and Stella May Salyards at home. The funeral was held last Monday and interment was made at Sligo. 7/31/1913 Clarion Democrat.
SAMUEL, ANDREW - SLIGO - Funeral services were held for Andrew Samuel, who died in his home at Sligo Tuesday, at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hawk Funeral Home. Rev. William Boyle, of the Lutheran Church, Kittanning, officiated. Interment was in the Sligo Cemetery. Mr. Samuel was born in Austria November 2, 1882, the son of Andrew and Augustina Abraham Samuel. SANFORD, H. EVERETT — H. Everett Sanford, retired Duquesne Light Co. employee, died of a stroke Saturday in the Oakmont Nursing Center. Mr. Sanford, 91, of Penn Hills was a commercial representative for Duquesne Light, retiring in 1965. He was a member of the Squirrel Hill Kiwanis Club, Homewood Fort Pitt Masonic Lodge 635 and other Masonic groups. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross. Surviving is a daughter, Mitsie Szostak of Export, Westmoreland County. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the William F. Gross Funeral Home, 11735 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m Wednesday. Burial will be in Sligo Cemetery, Sligo , Clarion County. SARVEY, JEFFERSON — Injuries sustained in a traffic accident Thursday night were fatal to Jefferson Sarvey, 72, who died in the Brookville hospital early Saturday morning. Mr. Sarvey was riding In a car driven north on Fifth avenue by Roy Sarvey late Thursday. An oil truck, owned by Williams Brothers Co., of Tulsa, with Ralph F. Cox of Marietta, Pa., as driver, was parked on the east side of the street, headed north. Roy Sarvey, driver, stated that he was blinded by lights from an oncoming car, and did not see the truck. Taken immediately to the hospital, Mr. Sarvey was suffering from a compound fracture of the leg, chest injuries, and shock. While his condition was serious, he was not thought to be in danger, at first. The other passengers in the car were Mr. Sarvey's granddaughter, Janet and Virginia Steight, both of whom were cut and shaken in the crash, but were not seriously injured. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home, with Rev. A. C. Thompson officiating, and interment in Clarion cemetery. Born in Jefferson county July 15, 1861, Mr. Sarvey was married to Minnie Schugars in 1894, in Jefferson county, and the couple moved to Clarion in 1902, where they have lived since. In addition to his widow, Mr. Sarvey is survived by seven children; Mrs. Elva Harriger, Sligo; Frank, Aliquippa, Mrs. Ethel Collinwood, Franklin; Warren, Weirton, Pa.; Mrs. Eva Fagley, Mrs. Evelyn Wensel and Roy Sarvey of Clarion, thirty grandchildren, and a brother and sister, Leslie Sarvey and Mrs. Rose Schreckengost, both of Brookville. SARVEY, ROY J. — CLARION - Roy J. Sarvey, 68, of 184 Second Ave., died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Clarion Osteopathic Hospital. Born May 23, 1901, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Jefferson and Nina M. Shugars Sarvey. He had been superintendent for over 30 years of the Clarion Cemetery, a member of the VFW Club of Clarion and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are a brother, Warren Sarvey of Clarion; five sisters, Mrs. Elva Fenstermaker of Oil City, Mrs. Ethel Collingwood of Titusville, Mrs. Lena Wensel of Sligo, Mrs. Olive Myers of Grove City and Mrs. Eva Fagley of Strattanville. SAY, W. EUGENE — W. Eugene Say, 67, of 10130 Route 58, Sligo, died at 9:26 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2007, in the emergency room of Clarion Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1939, in the Village of West Freedom, he was the son of Palmer E. and Indianola Fair Say. Mr. Say was a machinist and mold maker most of his life and retired in 2001 from Owens-Brockway. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Say enjoyed hunting and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was married Nov. 26, 1962, to the former Jean McCall, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael A. Say and wife, Kathy, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Joseph R. Say of Canton, Mich.; and one granddaughter, Krista Say of Fort Myers, Fla. He also is survived by a sister, Viola Fulmer of Callensburg; and two brothers, James Say of Westfield, N.Y., and William Say of West Freedom. There will be no visitation. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Dan Myers, pastor of the Mount Joy Methodist Church, officiating. SAYERS, BLODWIN BEATRICE (WOODS) — Mrs. Sayers, Curllsville Woman, Dies — SLIGO - Mrs. Blodwin Beatrice Sayers, 72, of Curllsville, widow of Edgar Earl Sayers, died at 3 p.m. Monday in Brookville Hospital. She was born in Curllsville November 14, 1896, a daughter of the late Dr. George B. Woods and Ada Armagost Woods. Her husband, Edgar E. Sayers, died in June 1966. Mrs. Sayers was a member of the United Church of Christ in Curllsville and a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Sligo. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Craig of Rimersburg RD; three sons, Eugene Sayers of McKean, Brinton Sayers of New Bethlehem RD and Max Sayers of Shippenville; 15 grandchildren, and a brother, Eugene Woods of New Bethlehem. Two sons, Ralph and George, are deceased. Friends will be received at the Hawk Funeral Home in Sligo from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the United Church of Christ in Curllsville, with the pastor, Rev. Paul Miller, officiating. SAYERS, EARL EUGENE — Earl "Gene" Sayers, 73, of North Main Street, McKean, formerly of Curllsville, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at his home. Born July 22, 1930 in Curllsville, he was the son of the late Earl E. and Blodwen Woods Sayers. Mr. Sayers graduated from Sligo High School in 1948. He was employed at Gartner and Harf Packing Co. for 36 years as a meat cutter and later as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement. He was a Penn State University football fan. He enjoyed gardening, spending time at the family camp, woodworking, reading, history, music and travel. Mr. Sayers was married to the former Shirley McCafferty for 53 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Timothy Sayers and his wife, Anne, of Waterford, Jeffry Sayers and his wife, Linda, of Waterford, Eugene Sayers of Springcreek, Brian Sayers of Edinboro, David Sayers of Edinboro and Gregory Sayers and his wife, Marian, of Cranesville. He is also survived by a brother, Max Sayers and his wife, Joyce, of Shippenville; a sister, Mary Craig of Rimersburg; and 10 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sayers was preceded in death by a son, Michael Sayers; and three brothers, George, Ralph and Brinton Sayers. Services were held at the Glunt Funeral Home in Edinboro. Interment was at Valley Cemetery. SAYERS, THOMAS H. — Thomas H. Sayers — A funeral service for Thomas H. Sayers, local rural mail carrier and World War I veteran, was held at the home in West Penn street, New Bethlehem, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12. Burial will full military rites was made in the Leatherwood Presbyterian cemetery. Dr. J. Wallace Fraser was in charge of the religious service, while the military ceremony was directed by Curt Fritz, of Rimersburg, Commander of Parker D. Cramer Post 2145, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Sayers died Wednesday, December 8, 1943 in the West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, following an illness of ten days. He was born September 23, 1894, at Churchville, a son of Elmer E. and Nettie Kelly Sayers. He was 49 years, two months and 15 days old. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Goldie (Carl) Sayers and the following children: Thomas H. Sayers, Jr., of New Bethlehem, Ruth, Richard, Eugene and James Sayers, at home; his step-mother, Mrs. Etta Sayers of New Bethlehem; a half-brother, Harry Sayers of New Bethlehem; four half-sisters, Mrs. William Cox of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Daisy Bish of Hawthorn, Mrs. Nellie Reeseman of Putneyville, and Miss Ida Sayers of New Bethlehem; and one grandchild. Mrs. Sayers was a member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of New Bethlehem, and the Rural Letters Carriers Association of Clarion county. Mr. Sayers carried mail on Route 4, New Bethlehem. He had been connected with the local post office for 23 years. Thomas Sayers was inducted into the armed service at Clarion on October 2, 1917. He was advanced to the grade of Corporal on December 13, 1918. He served with the Co. C. Hq. Bn. GHQ, A.E.F., in France. Before going oversease he was with the 80th Division, Camp Lee, Va. He was discharged from the service on the 25th day of March, 1919, at Camp Dix, N.J. He was 23 years old when he enlisted. Many beautiful floral tributes were given by friends and organizations. Veterans of Foreign Wars gave a patriotic piece of red, white and blue carnations. Among the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the funeral were Commander Fritz, Clarion County Legion Commander Charles J. Lewis, Roy Allison, Comrade Klutz, Dr. C.V. Long, V.P. Musi, and Robert H. Showers. The firing squad, commanded by L.M. McCafferty, included Ed Kuhns, Henry Wurm, Post Commander C.F. Walker, E. (illegible). Pallbearers were post office attaches and rural carriers. Interment was made under direction of the Vorous Funeral Home. CARD OF THANKS - We wish to thank friends and neighbors who so kindly and acceptably assisted us during the illness and after the death of our husband and father, Thomas H. Sayers. SAYLOR, CLARA G. (DEITZ) — Clara G. Saylor, 80, of Rimersburg RD1, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 1994, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lingering illness. Born March 15, 1914, in Shamburg, Piney Township, Clarion County, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna Howe Deitz. She, along with her husband, John M. Saylor, owned and operated Saylor's Restaurant and Dance Hall near Rimersburg from April 1, 1953, to 1966. The Saylors then operated a skating rink at the same location until 1976. Mrs. Dietz[sic] was a member of Cherry Run United Presbyterian Church. On Sept. 18, 1934, she married John M. Saylor, who died on July 23, 1976. Mr. Saylor is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Junior (Jane M.) Aites and Mrs. Ronald (Pearl A.) Seybert, both of Rimersburg RD1; three sons, John W. Saylor of Sligo RD1, Frank E. Saylor of Sligo and Fred L. Saylor of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Saylor is also survived by six sisters, Mrs. Edna Stefanko, Mrs. Laura Cochran, and Mrs. Mary Clark all of Knox, Mrs. Paul (Evelyn) Rexo f Knox RD1, Mrs. Clyde (Ruth) Rex of Polk and Mrs. John (Betty) wagner of Venus; two brothers, Ronald (Pug) Deitz of Bradford and John Deitz of Shippenville RD1; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Saylor was preceded in death by triplet daughters, Geneve Ann, Geraldine Ann and Elizabeth Ann, who died Oct. 9, 1938; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mae Wagner and Ida Deitz; and five brothers, Louis Deitz, Albert Deitz, Charles Deitz, Elmer Deitz, and Willis Deitz. The family will receive friends after church and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, J.D. Miller, supervisor in Rimersburg. SAYLOR, FRANK EDWARD — Frank Edward Saylor Sr. -- Avid hunter, involved in numerous hunting organizations -- CLARION – Frank Edward Saylor Sr., 67, of Front Street, Sligo, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008 , at Clarion Hospital following a brief illness. Born June 16, 1940 , in Churchville, Clarion County , he was a son of the late John M. Saylor and Clara G. Deitz Saylor. He married the former Patricia A. Smith on March 28, 1969 , in Brookville, and she survives. Mr. Saylor was a member and elder of the Licking-Cherry Run Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Sligo High School in 1959. He served with the United States Army from 1963 until 1965 as a private first class, taking his basic training at Ft. Gordon , Ga. , and then serving stateside in Arizona . Mr. Saylor was an avid hunter especially turkey and white-tailed deer. He was on record as having killed the Pennsylvania turkey with the second longest beard, more than 15 inches long. He was a member of the Rimersburg Rod and Gun Club where he was former secretary. He was a founding member and current treasurer of the Foothill Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club and founder of the Tri County Gobblers. He participated in the Clarion County Youth Field Days mentoring to the young hunters. He was an instructor for the hunter/trapper education programs at Union High School and hunter safety classes at the Rimersburg Rod and Gun Club. He retired from Harriger Auto Body near Sligo where he was employed from 1985 to 2004. He operated the Saylor Service Station between Rimersburg and Sligo until closing it in 1983 and continued his hydraulic jack repair business after retirement. During the construction of Interstate 80 in the 1960s he was employed by Lycoming Construction Company as a heavy equipment operator moving dirt for the fill projects. In addition to his wife, Mr. Saylor is survived by two sons, Rodney B. Saylor and his wife, Tina M., of Scottsville, Va., and Frank Edward “Ed” Saylor and his wife, Joni L., of Callensburg; two grandchildren, Dylan and Austin Saylor both of Scottsville; two brothers, John W. Saylor and his wife, Ermagene, of Sligo and Fred L. Saylor and his wife, Linda, of De Funiak Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Jane Aites and her husband, Junior, of Rimersburg and Pearl Seybert of Rimersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death along with his parents are triplet sisters, Genevieve, Elizabeth and Geraldine Saylor in October 1938; a nephew, Jason Allen Aites on July 30, 1999 and a brother-in-law, Ronald Keith Seybert on August 7, 2006 . Friends were received Monday, May 19, 2008 , and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Rimersburg. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2008 , at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Moore, moderator of the Licking-Cherry Run Presbyterian Church, and lay minister Terry Marlowe, officiating. SAYLOR, SARAH CATHERINE (GREENAWALT) — RIMERSBURG – Mrs. Sarah Catherine Saylor, 80, Rimersburg RD 1 died in her home Saturday. Born February 6, 1879, in Sligo, she was the daughter of James and Nancy Wilson Greenawalt. She was married to William E. Saylor in 1897. He died in 1940. She was a member of the Curllsville Methodist Church. Surviving are five sons, James of Kittanning, Thomas of Hilliards, John of Rimersburg RD 1, Arnold and Harry, both of Rimersburg, three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Myers, Mrs. Mildred Myers and Mrs. Inis Gates, all of Sligo RD 1. 29 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Robert Greenawalt of Sligo, Thomas Greenawalt of New Bethlehem and Paul Greenawalt of Brookville, and three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Botzer of Sligo RD 1, Mrs. Anna McAnnich of Freeport and Mrs. Edna Keely of Sligo. SCHAEFFER, HENRY “LINK” — Henry '' Link'' Schaeffer, 87, of Mayfield Drive, Clarion, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in Clarion Hospital. Born June 9, 1913, in Clarion, he was a son of the late Frank and Millie Crattie Schaeffer. Mr. Shaefer retired from Owns-Illinois Glass in Clarion as a foreman in the maintenance department after 50 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. McDougal. Mr. Shaeffer was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion, the Quarter-Century Club of Owens-Illinois and Foxburg American Legion Post 0636. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was an accomplished woodworker, having made many toy horses and wagons for his many grandchildren, great-grand children, nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews. Mr. Schaeffer was first married to Anna Stark, who preceded him in death Nov. 14, 1951. He is survived by his second wife, Martha Schaeffer, whom he married on Feb. 9, 1957. Survivors also include two daughters, Rose Marie Brown of New Port Richey, Fla., and Kathy Bryner Daugherty and her husband, Tom, of Oil City; two sons, Henry V. Schaeffer and his wife, Nancy, of Sligo RD, and Robert W. SCHIMP, ROBERT HENRY — Robert Schimp, Age 44, Dies After Illness— SLIGO - Robert Henry Schimp, 44, of Sligo died at 4:40 p.m. Saturday in the Clarion Hospital following a short illness. He was born May 23, 1925 in Clarion, a son of Henry J. and Sarah Cyphert Schimp. Surviving are his father, along with his wife, the former Helen McKinney, whom he married November 4, 1945. Also surviving are three daughters and one son - Mrs. Albert (Carol) Harding of Pittsburgh, Mrs. John (Susan) Berleolli of Sligo, Sheila Schimp at home and Robert J. Schimp, serving with the U.S. Army at Monmouth, N.J.; two granddaughters, Debbie and Tammie; one brother, John Schimp of Clarion; one sister, Mrs. Sam (Shirley) Swick of Cowansville. Mr. Schimp, a veteran of World War II, was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sligo, a member of the Clarion VFW and the Sligo Sportsmans Club. Born Dec. 14, 1921, in Sligo, she was a daughter of Hezakiah and Jesse Myers Courson. Mrs. Schreckengost was a homemaker and is the past, had attended the Baker Street Church of God in Rimersburg. She enjoyed crocheting and working in her yard. Mrs. Schreckengost was married Sept. 30, 1939, to William "Shorty" Schreckengost, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Ronald and Darlyne Schreckengost of Rimersburg and Robert and Rose Schreckengost of Shippenville; two daughters, Mrs. James (Janet) Jackson of DuBois and Mrs. Edwin (Bonnie) Reynolds of Rimersburg; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. SCHRECKENGOST, WILLIAM R. “SHORTY” — William R. "Shorty" Schreckengost, 83, of Rimersburg, died Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2001, in the Clarion Hospital following a short illness. Born Jan. 1, 1918, in Somerville, Armstrong County, he was a son of Andrew and Effie Hoovan Schreckengost. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. In his younger years, Mr. Schreckengost worked in the deep coal mines for 19 years, then for the former Hull's Resurfacing in Butler. He retired in 1983 as a foreman at the former Bracken Construction Co. of Sligo after 20 years of service. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Reidsburg and was an active member of VFW Post No. 7132 in Rimersburg. Mr. Schreckengost was married Sept. 30, 1939, to the former Gladys "Tootie" Courson, who died May 10, 2001. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Janet) Jackson of DuBois and Mrs. Edwin (Bonnie) Reynolds of Rimersburg; two sons and their wives, Ronald and Darlyne Schreckengost of Rimersburg and Robert and Rose Schreckengost of Shippenville; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. SCHWAB, CHARLES “MERVIN” (Rev) — The Rev. Charles Mervin Schwab, 93, of Sligo, died of natural causes Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at his son's home in Sligo. Born Nov. 27, 1910, in Rossiter near Punxsutawney, he was the son of James Glade and Maude Roush Schwab. Rev. Schwab worked in the underground coal mines in the Punxsutawney area for 24 years. He was mine foreman many of those years. At age 41, Rev. Schwab was called into the ministry of the United Methodist Church. In 1953, he was appointed to the Callensburg Charge, which he served until 1963. The five churches in the charge were Callensburg, West Freedom, Perryville, West Monterey and Mount Pleasant. In 1963, he was appointed to Croton Avenue United Methodist Church in New Castle where he ministered until 1973. He then served Unionville United Methodist Church near Rochester, Pa. In 1976, Rev. Schwab and his wife, Emma, retired and moved back to the Sligo area to be near their family. From 1976 until April 2003 he served as supply pastor for many area churches and preached at Rustic Acres Campground near Marianne for 20 years. Rev. Schwab was a member of Sligo United Methodist Church. He enjoyed serving the Lord and all the many friends he made over the years. He also enjoyed hunting with his grandsons, gardening, baseball and being with his family. Rev. Schwab was married for 54 years to the former Emma Hetrick, who died Jan. 1, 1990. He later married Garnet McHenry, who died Nov. 14, 2003. Surviving are a son, Herman, and daughter-in-law, Judy Schwab, of Sligo, with whom he made his home; four grandchildren, Eric Schwab and wife, Shawn, of Clarion, Chuck Schwab and wife, Brenda, of Sligo, Elizabeth Miller and husband, Rob, of Lancaster, and Lisa Horton and husband, Jeremy, of Sayre; nine great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Carol McGuire and husband, Mick, of Clarion, and Jackie Hughes of Clarion; and many stepgrandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Jim Schwab and wife, Gerry, and Earl Schwab and wife, Mae, both of Jamestown, N.Y., and Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Helen Dinger of Punxsutawney; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wives, Rev. Schwab was preceded in death by two brothers, Blaine and Herman Schwab. SCHWAB, EMMA K. — SLIGO - Emma K. Schwab, 78, of RD1 Sligo, died Monday, Jan. 1, 1990, in Clarion Hospital, following a short illness. Born March 12, 1911, in Kittanning, she was a daughter of the late H.H. and Dora Walker Hetrick. She was married July 24, 1935, to the Rev. C. Mervin Schwab, who survives. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Schwab was very active in the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Sligo United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Adult Sunday School Class of the church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, J. Herman Schwab of RD1 Sligo; two grandsons, Eric L. Schwab of RD2 Clarion and Charles E. Schwab of RD1 Sligo; and two granddaughters, Beth Schwab and Lisa Schwab, both of RD1 Sligo. Also surviving are three brothers, Elmer Hetrick and Earl Hetrick, both of Punxsutawney, and Kenneth Hetrick of Hartstown; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Hetrick and Charles Hetrick. SCHWAB, GARNET PAULINE (HENRY)(McHENRY) —Garnet P. McHenry Schwab, 82, of Sligo, died unexpectedly Friday evening, Nov. 14, 2003, in Clarion Hospital. Born Dec. 22, 1920, near Limestone, she was the daughter of Alva and Elsie Harriger Henry. Mrs. Schwab worked at the Archway Cookie Factory in Rimersburg for 25 years. She also worked as a secretary for Sligo Borough and Piney Township before her retirement. She was a member of the Sligo United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling with her husband to Rustic Acre Campground where he preached. Mrs. Schwab also enjoyed watching the Bill Gaither Homecoming show on television, reading and spending time with family and friends. She first was married to Emmet L. McHenry, who died May 12, 1973. On Feb. 2, 1991, she was married to the Rev. C. Mervin Schwab, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol McGuire and husband, Harry, of Miola and Jackie Hughes of Clarion; one stepson, Herman Schwab and wife, Judy, of Sligo; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Doris Perry and husband, Charles, of Erie and Dona Smith of Clarion. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard W. McHenry; a son-in-law, Richard Hughes; one granddaughter, Michelle McHenry Hershman; a sister, Joan Bryant; and four brothers, Lee, Eugene, Glenn and Reeves. SCOTT, HAROLD FRANC — Harold Frank Scott, 83, of Route 68, Rimersburg, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Clarview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, following a brief illness. Born July 13, 1920, in Madison Township, Clarion County, he was a son of the late William Lyon Scott and Violet M. Conner Scott. Mr. Scott was a 1937 graduate of Rimersburg High School. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1961 at the age of 40 with a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a corsair Navy pilot aboard the USS Yorktown in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He served with the U.S. Navy for 22 years as an active member and reserve member and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander. Following World War II, he was a partner in Scott's Dairy near Rimersburg until 1957 and then worked for Bracken Construction Co. of Sligo and Les Taylor Engineering of Clarion. He was a member of Jerusalem United Church of Christ of Rimersburg, where he had served as an elder and deacon. Mr. Scott was a member of the Rimersburg Lions Club, the Rimersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Midwestern Chapter of Civil Engineers Society, the Southern Clarion County Development Corp., the Rimersburg VFW and American Legion, and he had served on the Veterans Memorial Park Committee in Rimersburg. He was interested in the activities of his grandchildren and enjoyed deer hunting, hobby farming and working with his fruit trees. He was married Nov. 2, 1946, at the George family home near Rimersburg to the former Eleanor L. George, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Eugenia S. Scott of Indianapolis, Ind., and Carol L. Scott of Rimersburg; and a son, Ray H. Scott and his wife, Susan, of Rimersburg. Survivors also include six grandchildren, Katy M. Kriebel of Abilene, Texas, Scotia R. McClung and her husband, Johnny, of San Marcos, Texas, Casey K. Bliss and his wife, Amanda, of Rimersburg, Corey Q. Bliss of Beavercreek, Ohio, Molly M. Scott of Rimersburg and Neil C. Scott of Rimersburg; a brother, Paul C. Scott and his wife, Dorothy, of Glen Carbon, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Sedgwick, Cabinetmaker, Dies - SLIGO - Edward James Sedgwick, 88, of Sligo, a partner in the Sedgwick Lumber Yard and Cabinet Shop in Sligo for 23 years, died at 10pm Tuesday in North Florida Union Hospital at Gainesville, Fla. Mr. Sedgwick had been a carpenter and cabinetmaker all his life. A son of Calvin and Margaret Patterson Sedgwick, he was born May 13, 1885, in Callensburg. He was married in 1906 to the former Estella Robb, who died in 1969. Mr. Sedgwick was a member of the Sligo United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, Edward Sedgwick of Sligo and Ernest Sedgwick of Houtzdale; four daughters, Mrs. Russell (Helen) Harriger and Mrs. Dean (Hazel) Myers of Sligo RD, Mrs. George (Viola) Hill of Los Alamos, Calif., and Mrs. John (Phyllis) Swartz of High Springs, Fla.; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Born June 26, 1917, in Rimersburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Viola (Mortimer) Fowler. She married Edward Sedgwick on October 8, 1938. He survives. A lifelong resident of the Sligo area, she was a homemaker and member of Sligo United Methodist Church. SEIFERT, GEORGE — TOOK CABOLIC (sic) ACID - Geo. Seifert of Near Curllsville, Ends His Life by the Acid Route - Some two weeks ago, Geo. Seifert, a well-known stone mason and bricklayer, formerly of Hawthorn, Pa., but lately of near Curllsville, this Co. disappeared from home. His whereabouts were unknown. Recently his son received a letter from him stating that he was in Canada, and if they would come for him, he would return home. Accordingly two of his sons left for Canada, but found him in Buffalo. On Monday of this week they started home with him, and between Elmenton and East Brady he left his seat and went to the rear end of the car where he remained a few minutes and then returned to his original seat near his sons, and said: “Boys, I have take carbolic acid, and am going to die.” A search found the bottle at the rear end of the car, and sure enough the words came true. There was no physician on the train, and he died before East Brady was reached. The body was taken to his home near Curllsville by the overland route. Clipping courtesy of Linda Walls.

Born March 2, 1952, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Fred Seigworth and Patricia George. Mr. Seigworth worked as a welder for more than 30 years for RFI Energy of Sligo. He was an avid motorcyclist and was a member of the American Riders Motorcycle Club. He was of the Protestant faith. SERVEY, EDWARD BROWN — Edward B. Servey, 80, of Reidsburg, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at the Clarion Hospital. Born Sept. 29, 1928, he was a son of G. Frank Servey and Goldie Belle Henry Servey. He was married Oct. 13, 1958, to L. Leona Space, who survives. Mr. Servey was a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, serving in the 109th Engineers in Germany and France during the Korean War. He worked for Clarion Dry Cleaners for 23 years and later worked for Kiser Coal and C & K Coal Co. He was a member of the VFW, a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Clarion and also the American Legion. He is survived two daughters, Peggy Gourley and husband, Nobel (Punk), of Reidsburg and Anita Hinkle and husband, Jeff, of Emlenton; five sons, Tom Servey and friend, Cindy, of Sligo, Frank Servey and wife, Lynn, of Hughey, Mark Servey and wife, Liz, of Reidsburg, Bruce Servey and friend, Candy, of Clarion and Jack Servey and wife, Gretchen, of Clarion; and two stepsons, Dan Space and wife, Pam, of Shippenville and Sam Space of Mercer. SEYBERT, AUDREY JANE — Audrey Jane Seybert, 75, of Maple Grove Road, Rimersburg, died at 11 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, in Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, following an extended illness. Born Sept. 20, 1929, in Huey, Toby Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of John Davis and Pearla Fair Davis Brown. She attended Huey School. Mrs. Seybert had been employed at Clarion University and also at the Clarion Holiday Inn as a member of the custodial staff. She was a member of the Grace Community Church in Curllsville. Mrs. Seybert enjoyed crocheting and her family. She was married to Robert E. Seybert, who died June 9, 1992. Surviving are four daughters and their husbands, Donna Mae and Phillip Bryant of Strattanville, Judith Pauline and Larry Schnell of Karns City, Rose Mary and Allan Miller of Chicora and Leanna Lorraine and Dennis Reeseman of Rimersburg; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Doris Davis and Esther Brown, both of Huey; and a number of nieces and nephews. SEYBERT, BERNICE — BERNICE SEYBERT DIES IN DUBOIS. — Mrs. Bernice Ruth Seybert, 64, of Sligo died Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 1981, in DuBois Hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1916, in Mayport, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Loma Booser Platt. She was married to Leland "Bud" Seybert, who survives. Mrs. Seybert was a member of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Duane of New Salem; two grandchildren, Faith and Julie Seybert of New Salem; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Yaney of Ashtabula, Ohio, Mrs. Arthur (Josephine) Pence of Conneat, Ohio, Mrs. Wade (Verda) Smith of Sligo and Mrs. Blaine (Gladys) Monrean of Baxter, and one brother, Floyd Platt of Downington. One sister preceded her in death. Friends are being received at the Cleo A. Hawk Funeral Home in Sligo where services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. SEYBERT, M.R. — M.R. Seybert of Curllsville, Clarion County, committed suicide on a train between Oil City and Emlenton. Seybert swallowed carbolic acid. He was accompanied by his two sons, and boarded the train at Buffalo. Shortly after leaving Oil City he went into the closet and swallowed the contents of an ounce bottle of the poison. Returning to his sons, he told them: "I am going to die." and collapsed on the seat. The body was taken off at Emlenton and forwarded to Curllsville. Seybert was about 62 years old. SHAFFER, AMOS — Amos Shaffer, of Ringgold, died Thursday, Apr. 8, of asthma, aged 72 years, after a protracted illness. He is survived by three sons and three daughters one of whom is Mrs. Ida Magness of Sligo. The deceased was one of the most prominent farmers of this section. He was born and reared on the farm on which he died and was held in the highest esteem by every resident of that section. Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday. SHAFFER, DEAN C. — Dean C. Shaffer, 66, of Fairmount City, Limestone Township, died unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, September 10, 2002, at his home. Born August 30, 1936, in South Bethlehem, he was a son of Clair R. and Alice Irene (Henry) Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer worked for the former R&H Trucking Corp. in Clarion for 22 years and then worked for C.A. McCauley Trucking for 10 years. He retired in December 2001. He married the former Peggy L. "Peg" Baker on June 11, 1956. She survives. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Moose, Eagles, and VFW, all of New Bethlehem, the National Rifle Association and the Teamsters Union. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Shaffer enjoyed NASCAR events and hunting. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Jacklyn Painter and her husband, James, of Limestone, Amy Jo Beckwith and her husband, John, of Clarion, Becky Sue Harriger and her husband, Michael, of Sligo, Trudy Rae Reinsel and her husband, David, of Fairmount City and Judy Kay Shaffer of Clarion; three sons, Timothy D. Shaffer and Andrew King Shaffer, both of Clarion, and Michael D. Shaffer and his wife, Leslie, of Colorado Springs, Colo; 11 grandchildren, Jessica Painter, Jolene Painter, Justin Painter, Brandon Shaffer, Tyler Shaffer, Amanda Beckwith, Nathan Beckwith, Rochelle Beckwith, Reanne Theiss, Triston Shaffer and Allison Harriger; a brother and his wife, Terry L. and Karen Shaffer of New Bethlehem; and his father-in-law, Donald Baker of New Bethlehem. Including his parents, Mr. Shaffer was preceded in death by a son, Carl S. Shaffer; a sister, Catherine Jane Brinker; and a brother, Kenneth Duane Shaffer. SHAFFER, FRANCES EILEEN (BISH) — Frances E. Bish, 81, of Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center died at 5 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003. Born Feb. 12, 1922, in East Brady, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Blair Shaffer. Mrs. Bish was a homemaker and also worked for many years at the former Parker Glass Plant, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Baker Street Church of God in Rimersburg and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping and visiting. She was married June 14, 1941, to William (Bill) Bish, who died Dec. 23, 1992. SHANAFELT, EMMA (MAGNESS) — Services Held for Sligo RD Suicide Victim—SLIGO, Dec. 6 - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today for Mrs. Boyd Shanafelt of RD, Sligo, who was found shot to death in the bedroom of her home Friday morning. Coroner J. Ward Kier of Clarion issued a certificate of death by suicide. According to the coroner, Mrs. Shanafelt had been suffering from illness for some time. Friday morning she asked her husband to obtain some medicine from a physician in Sligo. While her husband was in Sligo, Mrs. Shanafelt shot herself in the mouth with a high-powered rifle, according to Coroner Kier. A neighbor, Mrs. Ray Gourley, discovered the body. Services were held in the Hawk Funeral Home in Sligo with Rev. McClure in charge. Interment was in the Clarion Cemetery with the following as pallbearers: Wade Kuntz, Cecil Gourley, Dale Stewart, J.R. Gourley, Harry Klingensmith and Clarence Varner. Mrs. Shanfelt was born July 18, 1914 in Monroe Township, Clarion County, a daughter of the late Theodore and Ida Shaffer Magness. She made her home in the Sligo area all her life. She was a member ofthe Presbyterian Church. SHANAFELT, GERTRUDE LOUISE —- Mrs. Gertrude Louise Eberhart Shanafelt died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Weaver on December 26, 1944. She was born April 30, 1882, at New Bethlehem, Pa. On April 30, 1898, she married John G. Shanafelt. She was preceded in death by her husband and three children. SHANAFELT, JOHN B. — J. Shanafelt, Clarion County Native, Dies -- SARVER - John B. Shanafelt, 71, retired employee of the T.W. Phillips Gas and Oil Co., Butler, died at 11:30 p.m. August 25 in his home at 115 1/2 Ralston Road, following a 15-year illness. He was born in Clarion County October 23, 1898, a son of John G. and Gertrude L. Eberhart Shanafelt. He moved to the Butler area from Leatherwood, Clarion County, when he began working for the T.W. Phillips Gas and Oil Co. as a young man. When he retired as a foreman in 1955 he had a service record of 46 years. Mr. Shanafelt was a member of the Union United Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Upper Burrell Fire Co. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret E. Kirkpatrick Shanafelt; a daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Bair of Sarver; three brothers, James V. Shanafelt of Sligo and Boyd and Darl A. Shanafelt of Clarion; two sisters, Mrs. Ben (Alice) Bish of Hawthorn and Mrs. Blanche Dawn of Seattle, Wash., and two grandchildren. Four brothers and a sister are deceased. SHAW, LILLIE MAE (SHERMAN) — Lillie Mae Sherman Shaw, 73, of Southern Avenue, Strattanville, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at her home. Born May 20, 1932, in Sligo, she was the daughter of Bird R. and Garnet Neiswonger Sherman. Mrs. Shaw was a devoted housewife and enjoyed fishing, camping, crafts and family picnics. She was married April 18, 1953, to Arthur Merle "Lumpy" Shaw, who died May 29, 2000. Surviving are two sisters, Claire Stromyer of Strattanville and Delores Bell of Knox; two stepdaughters, Sally Conners of Oil City and Rojean Boone of Georgia; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and in-laws. SHERMAN, FRANCES E. (HARTZELL) -- Frances E. Sherman, 82, of Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, formerly of Fisher and New Bethlehem, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008. Born March 18, 1925, in Paint Township, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Barbara Waldron Hartzell. Mrs. Sherman was a homemaker, a member of the Methodist church in New Bethlehem and the Cornerstone Church of God in Hawthorn. She was a volunteer at the Thrift Shop in New Bethlehem. She worked for the Helpmates, Clarion Motel, Area Agency on Aging and was a caregiver to many. Mrs. Sherman was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and devoted her life to her family and serving the Lord. On Nov. 1, 1946, she married Byrd J. Sherman, who preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1993. Surviving are one son, Rick Sherman and wife, Charlene, of Corsica; three daughters, Debra Sherman and companion, Bill Yilek of Friendship, N.Y., Sherri Dechant and husband, Charlie, of Sligo and Julie Evans and husband, Dave, of New Bethlehem; seven grandchildren; Richard Sherman and wife, Emily, Tessa Greeley and husband, Ray, Stephanie Rader and husband, Jeremy, Joel Dechant and wife, Shannon, Brande Evans and Nicole and Christopher Graves; one great-grandchild, Tamara Perkins; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. SHERMAN, RUTH G. (SHIELDS) -- Ruth G. Sherman, 90, of Sligo, died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center near Sligo. Born May 31, 1911, in Sligo, she was a daughter of George Burton and Myrtle Wilson Shields. In the past, Mrs. Sherman had worked as a clerk at various stores in Clarion. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sligo and was a charter member of Lady Priscilla Rebekah Lodge No. 305 in Sligo. Mrs. Sherman was a homemaker and was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She had been a resident for 15 years of the Clarview facility where she was socially active and was crowned queen in 1986. Mrs. Sherman was married Oct. 1, 1936, to Wesley E. Sherman Sr., who died Oct. 26, 1953. Surviving are a son, Wesley E. "Pat" Sherman Jr. and his wife, Madelyn, of Sligo; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Donna) Flick of Sligo; three grandchildren, Troy Flick and his wife, Kris, of Rimersburg, Mrs. Mike (Stephanie) Cole of West Caldwell, N.J., and Matthew Sherman and his wife, Jennifer, of Pittsburgh; and six great-grandchildren. SHICK, DARREL EUGENE (“DARL”) — Darrell Eugene "Darl" Shick, 81, of Rimersburg, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2007, at Clarview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, following an illness. Born in Rimersburg on March 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Roll and Icie Marie Hawk Shick. He attended schools in Toby Township, Baker, Watson and Carwick, and graduated from eighth grade with an honorary diploma. He also attended Union High School and graduated in 1944. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and served 18 months in Germany and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He graduated from Clarion State College, now Clarion University, in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. He was awarded a masters degree from Westminster College in 1951 in psychology and guidance and from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1967 in geography. He served the Union School District as elementary principal from 1964 until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Shearer Shick American Legion Post #454 for over 50 years and served for 38 years as adjutant of the post. He was a member of the board of governors of the Rimersburg Medical Center since 1964, in 1991, he was presented with a plaque from the Union school board of education for his leadership and service. Mr. Shick is survived by one brother Donald Shick and his wife and Leona of Rimersburg; a step-sister Roberta Baker Shick and her husband Jack of Henderson, Texas; a step-brother Robert Baker and his wife Carrie of Warren, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1961, his mother in 1943; his step-mother Alma Shaffer Baker Shick in 1989; three sisters, Helen Shick Neal in 1970, Ruby Shick McElhaney in 2000, and Dorothy Fowler in 2001; and a step-brother Roy Donald Baker in 1994. SHICK, KENNETH — KENNETH SHICK DIES AT AGE 55. Kenneth M. "Pappy" Shick, 55, of Limestone died Nov. 6, 1981, in Brookville Hospital. Born May 11, 1926, in Alcola, he was a son of Elmer F. and Ruth Bish Shick. He was married to the former Margaret I. Crytzer. His mother, who resides at Fairmount City, and widow survive. Mr. Shick was a member of the Limestone Baptist Church and was employed by the Amos Dolby Co. of Corsica. In addition to his widow and mother, he is survived by one son, Kenneth Eddie of Brookville, one daughter, Mrs. Grover (Pheroby) Walter of Clarion; four grandchildren; one brother, John H. Shick of Timblin and one sister, Mrs. Millie Musser of New Bethlehem. Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday from the Terry L. Beamer Funeral Home in Brookville with the Rev. Harold Comings officiating. SHIELDS, JOHN CRAIG — The death of John C. Shields, which occurred at his home in St. Petersburg on Thursday, May 9, 1929 at 10:45 a.m., while not entirely unexpected, owing to recent illness, surprised many friends and touched many hearts throughout the county. John Craig Shields was born near Reidsburg, Clarion County, March 14, 1836 and at his death was aged 93 years, 1 month and 24 days. He was the oldest son of Samuel Craig and Sarah Frampton Shields. He is survived by one half-brother, William R. Gardner of Buffalo, N. Y., and by 5 sons and 5 daughters: George Shields, Rimersburg; Samuel Shields, Coraopolis; James Shields of Casey, Ill.; Mrs. Alice Myers, Butler; Mrs. J. P. Taylor, Springville, N. Y.; Mrs. F. D. Hays, Clarion; Mrs. B. M. Slaugenhaupt, Wilkinsburg; Mrs. L. H. Giering, Emlenton; J. W. Shileds, Prospect and E. W. Shields of Muncie, Ind. Mr. Shields spent the greater part of his life on his farm near Blair's Corners and made a success of his fanning. He was always interested in civic life and public affairs. He served as Justice of the Peace for 25 years. He was elected twice as County Commissioner and served six years. During his terms of service the question of the erection of the County Home first came up, and it is but just to say that had the action of Mr. Shields and his fellow Commissioners on the Board been adopted and carried through, the taxpayers of the county would have saved from $25,000 to $50,000 and the stain of one of the most corrupt scandals that ever cursed the county. Mr. Shields was a man of just and upright ideas, and by this with his genial disposition and kindly manners made hosts of friends and admirers who recall with respect and love his long and useful life. Funeral services were held at his late home Sunday, May 12, conducted by Rev. J. R. Booth of St. Petersburg, assisted by Rev. B. F. Williams of Emlenton. Burial was made in the Callensburg Cemetery

SHIMMONS, JAMES — James Shimmons, 88, of Huey, died Saturday morning, April 20, 2002, in the Clarion Hospital. Born April 25, 1913, in Fairmount City, he was a son of the late James Shimmons and Mary Davis. He was married on March 19, 1930, in Sligo, to the former Dorothy Fair, who preceded him in death May 12, 1983. Mr. Shimmons was a coal miner most of his life and worked at the Slope Coal Mines in Huey. He was a Protestant and enjoyed reading the Bible. In the past, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Dorothy Davis of Huey. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and wife, were two sons, George Shimmons and James "Dinger" Shimmons; a brother, Alvin "Mickey" Davis; and a sister, Claire Myers. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Goughler, pastor of New Athens Church of God of Prophecy, officiating. Interment will follow in the Rimersburg Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the New Athens Church of God of Prophecy, Route 68, Rimersburg, 16248, or to a charity of one's choice.
SHIPE, RUTH KINNEAR (MYERS) — RUTH K. SHIPE, EX-MARIENVILLE WOMAN DIES - Marienville - Mrs. Ruth K. Shipe, 91, a former Marienville resident, died at 1:05 a.m. Saturday in the Laurel Haven Rest Home at Brookville after a lingering illness. She was born March 29, 1878, in Helen Furnace, Clarion County, the daughter of John and Lydia Clark Myers. On September 9, 1896 she married Daniel Shipe who preceded her in death in 1939. Mrs. Shipe was a member of the Marienville United Methodist Church and former member of Eastern Star Lodge and Rebekah Lodge of Marienville. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Frazler of Waukegan, Ill., Mrs. Mabel Hepler of New Bethlehem and Mrs. Blanche Hess of LaPuente, Calif.; one son, Wayne Shipe of Johnsonburg; one sister, Mrs. Dora Osborne of Ripley, NY; 18 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one son, John. Friends will be received at the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home of Marienville until noon today when removal will be made to the Marienville United Methodist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Rev. Paul Lee, Marienville United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in North Forest Cemetery, Marienville. — Note: granddaughter of Jacob & Sarah (Best) Myers of Piney Township.
