TURNEY, JACOB STECK, SR.

TURNEY, JOHN C. — On last Friday night, John C. Turney, a well known and prominent farmer of this county, died of neuralgia of the heart, at his residence in Piney township. He had been in his usual health up until the day previous, when, about two o'clock in the afternoon, he came from the barn to his house, stating that he was suffering great pain. He continued to grow worse until Friday night, when death ended his suffering. Mr. Turney was aged 68 years, 9 months and 16 days. He held various positions of trust, was noted for his integrity, enjoyed the highest confidence and esteem of his neighbors, and possessing most excellent judgment, his counsel and advice were frequently sought by acquaintances. For many years he supplied several citizens of this place with country produce, and his form was a familiar figure on the streets of Clarion. The funeral of the deceased took place from his late residence in Piney on Tuesday, Rev. J.M. McCurdy, D.D., preaching a very eloquent and forcible sermon from these Scriptural words, to which the deceased gave utterance shortly before his death and on which he evidently pinned his faith, being the first verse of the 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." Dr. McCurdy said that Mr. Turney was a model man, that he despised meanness, and that the words of Pope - "An honest man is the noblest work of God" - were applicable to the deceased. All that was mortal of John C. Turney was followed to his last resting place - the Lutheran cemetery at Churchville - by a large concourse of people. The deceased leaves surviving him a widow, Mrs. N.J. Turney, and four children, namely, James P. Turney, of Chicago; Mrs. Ida Colwell of Parker's Landing, and John M. Turney, and Miss Mary E. Turney, both of Piney township, besides two sisters, Mrs. C.N. Henry and Mrs. Eliza Pontious, both of Kittanning. The deceased was the last survivor of six brothers, one of whom, J.S. Turney was Sheriff of Clarion county in 1855-6-7. — Clarion Democrat 3/5/1896  — note: Sheriff Turney’s name was Jacob Steck Turney.
