Sept. 25, 1942 Oil City Derrick - SLIGO

   Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Craig, 87, well known and highly esteemed Sligo resident, died Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the home fo Mrs. Robert Taylor, with whom she resided. She was born in Piney township on September 6, 1855, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hook.

   One brother, James Hook of near Knox, survives. Funeral services were conducted September 21 at 2 p.m. from the family residence. Rev. E.C. Hasenplug, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated and interment was made in the Sligo cemetery.

   Ben Slaugenhoup, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed F. Slaugenhoup of Sligo who has been accepted for service in the army left Oil City Saturday for New Cumberland. A dinner in his honor was given at the parents home during his 11 day furlough. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Slaugenhoup and daughter, Frances, of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Reed Slaugenhoup and family and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Slaugenhoup of near Sligo; Mr. and Mrs. Ed (Dufibauch?), Mrs. Etta Carney and daughter, *tie of Foxburg; Mr. and Mrs. (Martin?) Slaugenhoup and daughter, Janice, of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Ed F. Slaugenhoup and son, Boyd, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Slaugenhoup, of Sligo.

   Ted Williams of Camp Bowie, Texas, visited relatives and friends here over the weekend while en route to Philadelphia where he will spend the remainder of a 13 day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Williams. Picture coming here, his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Feldman, of Milwuakee, Wis., visited him in Chicago for several hours.

   Charles Allman of Clearfield spent Tuesday with his mother Mrs. Carrie Altman.

    Mrs. Raymond McCall and son, (Winan?) and daughter, Joyce Ann of West Freedom, called on Mrs. Myrtle Cole on Wednesday.

   Leo C. Bishop is spending a week with relatives in Pittsburgh.

   Dr. and Mrs. Frank W. Donley of Pittsburgh were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Silves.

   Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Seaman?) and sons, and Miss Hilda Monk of Woodville visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Richardson last Sunday.

   Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Troese spent Sunday in Pittsburgh.

   Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Bashline of Beaver visited Mr. and Mrs. Scott Silves over the weekend.

   Mrs. Gertrude Benn of Clarion called on Mrs. John Benn Friday afternoon.

   Mrs. Effie Irvin visited her brother, R.H. Fulton of Clarion on Wednesday. She also attended a Republican meeting and luncheon.

   Mrs. Catherine Kroh is spending the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kroh and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson of Rimersburg.

   Mrs. Joseph Clark of Petrolia visited last week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Walls and Mrs. Mary Walls.

   Dick and Jack Wiser of Clarion spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Wiser.

   Mr. and Mrs. Ed Allen, daughter, Joyce and Meade Parson of New Castle were Friday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Eshbaugh.

   Homer Sellers has returned to Lime, O. after visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Logue. He was accompanied home by his uncle, Homer Logue of Sharpsville.

   Thirty seven children attended a weiner roast in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Courson on Thursday evening.

   Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hackbarth, Ernest and Betty of Avalon, were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hackbarth. Ernest has enlisted in the marines.

   Dorothy Richardson and Kay Callen of Meadville spent the weekend at their home here.

   Saturday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Rupert were Mr. and Mrs. William Morrison of Reading and Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Fagley of Curllsville.

   Mr. and Mrs. Frank Reed and family visited Mr. and Mrs. E. Kriebel of West Monterey, on Sunday.

   Mrs. Carrah Emhoff is visiting her daughter, Mrs. C.A. Wadding of New Castle.

   Mr. and Mrs. Earl Greenawalt spent Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

   Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Hile were Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Slaugenhoup and Claire, of East Brady. Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Henry and Donna (Rese?) of Rocky Grove and Mr. and Mrs. W.*. Hile and Russell of Portage.

   Mrs. Fred Fox and son, Homer Ray, of Meadville, spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Dimple Burns.

   Mrs. J.G. Slaugenhoup of Detroit is visiting her brother, W.*. Colwell, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Conner, Mrs. Stella Quering, and Mr. and Mrs. R.K. Newell.

 

Nov. 16, 1943 Oil City Derrick - SLIGO

   On Thursday evening, November 4, at her home on Colerain St., Diane Thomas was feted at a dinner in honor of her ninth birthday.

   Miss Mary S*eal of Pennsy spent several evenings last week with Miss Helen Perry.

   Miss Mary Mathias of Clarion visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Mathias over the weekend.

   Mrs. Jack Wiser has returned home after spending sometime at Macomb, Ill. with her husband, Corp. Wiser.

   Mr. and Mrs. Edward Miller and son, Ira Daniel, of Sharon, were weekend visitors of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Miller and Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Danielson.

   Rev. and Mrs. Elder D. Crawford of Callensburg were Wednesday evening dinner guests at the house of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Myers.

   Mrs. Bert Keister, sons Deane and William and Agnew Brinker spent Thursday afternoon at Cooke Forest with Mrs. Keister's brother, Morris McKinney and family.

   George Wyman of Knox, visited his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. U.R. Keys, over the weekend.

   Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Thompson of Mt. Zion were Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brinker of Cabot, Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Brinker and B.J. Brinker of town.

   Mr. and Mrs. Clair Conner spent a couple of days in Pittsburgh with her sister, Miss Mildred Colwell.

   Mr. and Mrs. Donald Phillips and daughter, Carole, of Oil City, were callers at the William A. Myers home last Sunday evening.

   The W.S.C.S. of the Methodist church held the November meeting on Wednesday at the church.

   Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burns spent Wednesday in Oil City.

   Recent callers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Altman were Mr. and Mrs. George Myers and family and Mr. and Mrs. M.T. Myers of Shamburg.

   J.O. Rumberger and Tom Reitchie of Pittsburgh spent Monday with Leo McGlinehey.

   Mr. and Mrs. George McCool and son, Jeffry, spent last week with relatives in Belaire, O.

   Mr. and Mrs. E.P. McCall of Clarksburg, W. Va., are visiting his mother, Mrs. Sarah Wester.

   Mrs. Elizabeth Kline of Youngstown, O., who spent the past week with Mrs. Jennie Bashline, and Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Silves, has returned home.

   Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Siehl and Nancy, visited Mr. and Mrs. Henry Siehl of Somerset over the weekend.

   Leon Shook spent the weekend at Pottsville, as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Frank (Muscara?) and daughter, (Jetta?) Rose.

   Lt. (*) and Mrs. Carl F. Smith were Friday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gallagher.

   Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Butler of Rimersburg, visited the Kelly Love family Wednesday afternoon.

   Rev. and Mrs. A.J. Renwick returned to Volant Tuesday after spending a couple of days with their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Renwick.

   Miss Alice Sweitzer of New Kensington visited her sister, Mrs. Lilly Shaw, last week.

   Mrs. Margaret Organ returned to Cleveland Wednesday after visiting for sometime with her sister, Mrs. William Myas.

   Mr. and Mrs. John E. Carmody and Gloria Faye Whisner spent the latter part of the week in Knox, where Mrs. Carmody's father, John Irwin, died on Wednesday morning.

   Mrs. Forest Gathers spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Gathers.

   Mrs. Bertha Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Griffith, Mrs. James Craig, John F. Craig, Mrs. Lyle Snyder, Mrs. Jessie Meier, Mrs. Paul Walker, Mrs. Charles Wiant, Mrs. Jennie Bashline, Mrs. Ray B. Erickson, Mrs. Kline and Miss Evelyn Mead attended a missionary conference held in the Rimersburg Presbyterian church on Friday.

   Sunday visitors in the Clair Bracken home were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sweitzer of Sharon, and Mrs. Dale Bracken of Riemrsburg.

   Mrs. W.D. Groce and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn E. Stanley and son, Terry, of Besemer, were weekend guests of Mrs. Groce's daughter and husband, Mr.a nd Mrs. John Meier.

   Miss Fannie Berrean, Mr. and Mrs. L.J. McGlinchey, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Hartman and J.P. Berrean attended the fuenral of John Irwin at Knox on Friday, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Kunselman and Mrs. Willis Elliott were Thursday evening callers at the Irwin home.

   Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Brinker of Sligo, received word that their son, Jay, was moved from Camp Barkley, Texas, to Los Angeles, Calif.

   Pvt. Charles McElravy and M/Sgt. and Mrs. George Alexander of Goldsboro, N.C., are spending a 10 day furlough with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cyril McElravy, of Sligo.  M/Sgt. and Mrs. Alexander are also visiting at his parental home in Rimersburg.

   Pfc. Blake Larimer, whose address is 517 Paratroop Inf., 17th Airborne Div., A.P.O. 452 Camp Mackell, N.C. visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Larimer, of Sligo, over the weekend.

   A son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Craig of Sligo, who joined the Sea-b**, is stationed at this address: William H. Craig, Platoon 561D6, 104 Camp Peary, Williamsburg, Va.

   Mr. and Mrs. Bart Keister of Sligo, received word that their son, Connell's address is as follows: Pfc. Connell A. Keister, Company C 334338857, 2142 M. Pas., Sub..** A.P.O. 4909, c/o Postmaster, New York, N.Y.

   Miss Pauline Gray of Huey spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Pollock of Mt. Airy.

 

March 18, 1944 Oil City Derrick - SLIGO

   The Sligo area oversubscribed the quota in the fourth war * campaign, the committee, Mrs. Elizabeth Silves and Carl M. Heeter, announced this week. The quota was set at $12,800 and $15,595.60 was sold by those canvassing the town.

   Mr. and Mrs. Seth Simpson, of Sligo, have announced the engagement of their daugther, Betty, to Technical Sergeant Ray Benn, of Rapid City, S.D., son of Mrs. Gertrude Benn of Clarion.

   Charles Magee of Harrisburg, visited his mother, Mrs. E.E. Morris last week before leaving for the navy for which he qualified February 10. Other visitors were Mrs. Alice Snyder of Rochester, Pa., Mrs. Arveda Black of Callensburg, Mrs. James Hoover and Mrs. Ella Burns.

   Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Wyman of Knox, called on Mrs. Carrie Fulmer and J.O. Wyman, recently.

   Ruth and Eleanore Burns of New Kensington, spent the weekend in their home here.

   Wanda and La Rue Davis of Wentling's Corners, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R.L. McDowell and family.

   Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Mercer and family, of Churchville, visited in the Carlton Murray home, Thursday evening.

   Mrs. Charles Wiant spent Wednesday in Rimersburg with her daughter, Mrs. C.H. Mortimer, in the Presbyterian church where the Missionary society was holding an all-day emeting. Dinner was served at noon.

   Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neal of Clarion, were Tuesday evening visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wensel.

   Friday evening callers of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Altman were Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Beals of Bakerstown and Mrs. Willis Black of Turnip Hole.

   Mr. Ralph Burns of Knox, visited Mrs. R.L. McDowell last Wednesday.

   Miss Dorothy Jean Kelly of Rimersburg, visited Mrs. Virginia Wiser one day last week.

   Mrs. Ruth Larimer of Shamburg, spent Thursday with her sister, Mrs. Dale Wensel.

   Rev. Robert Frederick, of Ebensburg, was a Friday evening caller in the P.A. Logue home.

   Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Rhoades, of Knox, spent last Sunday in the J.J. Meier home.

   Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bracken of Reynoldsville, who were visiting relatives here, spent Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Henry of Churchville. Mrs. R.M. Dunkle and Mrs. Carlton Murray, with whom they visited and Nancy L* Hawk also spent the day in Churchville.

   Mrs. Ralph McDonald of Dayton, O., is spending a few weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Courson while her hsuband, Technical Sergeant McDonald, is attending school in Burbank, Calif.

   Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Shoup and family of Lawsonham visited Mrs. Lettie Shoup and family on Sunday evening.

   Miss Ruby Neely of Oil City, spent Thursday with her cousins, Mirl* and Norma McDowell.

   Visitors during the weekend of Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Brinker were Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brinker and Mrs. Frechling of Cabot; Mr. and Mrs. Clair Thompson and son, Bud, of Mt. Zion, Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Myers of Parkers Landing, and Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Brinker.

   George Love spent the weekend in Warren.

   Miss Ellen Ward of Bradford was a weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. McGlinchey.

   Mrs. Jessie Hawk has returned to Erie after spending the weekend in her home here.

   Mr. and Mrs. Dietterick of Knox, visited W.P. Colwell and Mr. and Mrs. Clair Conner on Sunday.

   J.O. Wyman attended the funeral of his cousin, Mrs. Kate White, in St. Petersburg recently.

   Mrs. Evelyn Wensel spent Wednesday with her parents, Mr.and Mrs. S.S. Johnston of Shamburg.

   Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Logue of Salem, O., spent last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Logue.

   Mrs. E.E. Morris, Charles M*g*, Mrs. Arveda Black and Mrs. Gladys Morris visited in Pinoak on Wednesday with Mrs. Ralph Mortimer. Mrs. Mortimer scalded her leg when the handle broke off a pan of boiling water which she was carrying.

   Mr. and Mrs. Roy Craig of Sligo were informed of the safe arrival in Africa of their son, Hunter.

   Jack O'Neil Smathers, S */c is spending a few days at home with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Smathers of Sligo, after completing his basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

   A/O Glenn Hawthorne, stationed at Maxwell Field, Ala., spent a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hawthorne, of Sligo and his sister, Mrs. John L. Hindman and family of Corsica.

   Staff Sergeant Joe De Cenzo, formerly stationed at Camp Wheeler, Ga., visited friends in this vicinity last week before leaving for an embarkation center.

 

May 28, 1948 - SLIGO NEWS—Oil City Blizzard, Friday evening

    Mrs. Ira Wyman entertained the Ladies Aid of the Mt. Zion Methodist church, at her home Friday. Thirty-six members attended.

   Mrs. Lilly Shaw, who spent the winter in Pittsburgh with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shaw and Mr. and Mrs. George Welfinger, has returned to her home.

    Recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Morris were Mrs. Alice Snyder and daughter, Sylvia, of Rochester; and Mrs. Arveda Black and son, Ronald, of Callensburg.

   Mrs. D.H. Hilliard, daughter Mary Jane and Mrs. Eva Hassan spent Saturday in Pittsburgh.

   Mrs. Helen Rankin and children of Curllsville, visited Mrs. Herman Craig Wednesday.

   Mr. and Mrs. Milo Stewart and family have moved to Callensburg.

   Shirley Tremba has returned home from Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh, where she had been a patient for several weeks.

   Mr. and Mrs. William Miller of Frogtown, called on Mr. and Mrs. Ira Miller Saturday. Mrs. Ira Miller sustained a badly fractured ankle when she fell in front of her home.

   Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wyman and son, Billy, of Callensburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Ira Wyman were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wyman and family of Rimersburg. The occasion marked the first birthday anniversary of Shirley May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wyman. The birthday cake was baked by Mrs. Gerald Wyman.

   Mr. and Mrs. Jay Brinker and two children, and Mrs. J.W. Dunkle of Curllsville, called on Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Brinker, Wednesday.

   Mrs. Charles Hawthorne spent last week at Johnstown, with her mother.

   Mrs. Eva Hassan called on friends in Phillipston Friday.

   Mrs. Herman Craig, Mrs. Eva Kinser, Mrs. Carl McCall and son, Keith, spent Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

   Norma Jean, Barbara Lee and Carol Ann Howarth of New Bethlehem, called on J.O. Wyman last Sunday.

   Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Fowler and daughters, Eva May and Louise of New Kensington, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Sedgwick.

   Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Davis of Huey, and Dow Wagner attended the funeral of their aunt, Mrs. Mary Bole, at Rimersburg, Saturday.

   Mrs. Frank Burns and daughter, Ruth, of New Kensington, spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Burns, of near Sligo. They also called on Mr. and Mrs. E.L. McDowell, Mrs. David Pierce and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Ira Miller.

    Mrs. Edith Duckett of Karns City is visiting the John Swartz family.

   Mrs. Mabel burns and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Burns, attended Porter township high school commencement exercises at the Leatherwood Presbyterian church Wednesday. Austa Blair, a granddaughter of Mrs. Mabel Burns, was graduated.

   Mrs. V.R. Keys of East Brady was a Friday guest of Mrs. Bertha Myers.

   Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Elliott returned home Friday after spending several weeks in California.

   Mr. and Mrs. Francis Burns spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lerch of Erie.

   Friday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. O.S. Wilson were Mrs. Darwin Matthew of Kittanning, and S.V. Myers of near Rimersburg.

   Mrs. Carlton Murray, duaghter Helen, Mrs. Guy Hawk, son Cleo, Mrs. George McCool, children, Jeffrey and Helen, attended the variety show at the Evans City high school, Friday.

   Mr. and Mrs. John Swartz and family have been making frequent visits to Mayport, where Mrs. Swartz's father, James Shick, has been ill.

   Mrs. Willard Hawk and children, Selene and Lanny, of Rimersburg, spent Thursday with Mrs. Hawk's sister, Mrs. Edward L. Sedgwick.

   Prof. and Mrs. W.A. Stewart and family of Van, visited Mrs. Winnie Stewart over the weekend.

   Mrs. Sarah Nale and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nale of Clarion, called on Mrs. S.M. Wensel.

   Mr. and Mrs. David Hartman spent last week at Turnip Hole with the Joe Neely family. Mr. Neely is a patient in the Oil City hospital.

   Mrs. D.H. Hilliard and Mrs. Earl Greenawalt attended a shower at Turnip Hole on Friday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James McKinney.

   College students home for the summer vacation include James Swartz of California State Teachers' college, Alma Slater of Grove City college, Bob Randolph, Mike Slater and Josie Ann Hartman of Westminster college, De Maris Eberhart of Indiana State Teachers' college, Gloria Whisner, Hudson Hoover and Albert Klingensmith of Clarion State Teachers' college and Irene Divins of Indiana State Teachers' college.
