Aug 3, 1950 Oil City Blizzard - SLIGO NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Kouba? left Monday for their home in Kearney, Neb., after spending several days with the latters sister, Mrs. LeRoy Whitmore and family. On Friday, the two families enjoyed a picnic in Cook's Forest. Mrs. Melda McDowell accompanied by Mrs. Mary Heeter and Russell Barger of Callensburg, motored to Pittsburgh Tuesday to visit Mrs. Barger at the Eye and Ear Hospital, where she has undergone surgery twice in the past three weeks. Mrs. W.B. McElravy is ill. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Keen of Oil City were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Elliott and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Elliott of Mt. Zion. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Craig attended the Mail Carriers State Convention in Johnstown last week. Miss Norma Craig of Rimersburg was a weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Craig. Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Stopp spent Monday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sallade of Apollo. Robert Stewart of Warren visited relatives in town Thursday. Mrs. John McKinney returned home Thursday after spending three weeks in Burburbar General Hospital, Bellevue. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Heeter and son, Von, spent Sunday with Mr. Heeters mother, Mrs. George B. Heeter of Rimersburg. Mrs. H.K. Kietrick of Stanford, Conn., visited Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Conner last week. Mrs. Mary Miller, Mrs. Stella Quering and Mr. and Mrs. R.K. Newell attended a concert at Chautauqua Lake last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. B.W. Pritner and Mr. and Mrs. F.M. *uons and daughter, Ruth, New Kensington, were Sunday visitors in this vicinity and also attended Cherry Run camp meeting. Mrs. Minnie Owen, Mrs. Carrie Fulmer and J.O. Wyman were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Davis and family of New Bethlehem and Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Garris of Parkers Landing. Mr. and Mrs. William Erbe and son, Arthur, were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. William Coleman of East Brady. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Burns, David and Jackie, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Best and son of Knox. Mr. and Mrs. James Miller have returned to their home in Belleville, N.J., after spending some time in the C.W. Silves home. Miss Mildred Colwell of Pittsburgh is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Conner. Mrs. Jennie Hodil is spending the summer at Chautauqua Lake. The Young Married People's class of the Methodist church held a wiener roast in Limestone park, Friday evening. Larry Henry has returned to his home in Detroit, Mich., accompanied by his grandmother, Mrs. Cora Henry, who will spend two weeks there. Mrs. Bashline reports her daughter, Lois, and two children have sailed for Germany with her hsuband, Sgt. Merle Stauffer, who was ordered to duty there. The monthly meeting of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene will be held at 9 p.m. Friday. Eraphasts for the month of August is "Box Work". Sunday, August 6, is "Building Fund Sunday," in the Sunday School. The church school offering of the first Sunday of every month is devoted to building fund purposes. At the morning worship hour at 10:45 a.m. Rev. O'Brien will bring a message emphasizing Christian stewardship. His sermon will be entitled "Paul's Plan." Mr. and Mrs. Chester Davis and daughter, Cheryl of Aliquippa spent the weekend in the Russell Davis home. Mr. and Mrs. Connell Henry and family of Warren, visited Mrs. Henry's mother, Mrs. Mabel Henry, last week. Mrs. L.J. Feldman and son, Bruce, have returned to Washington, D.C., after spending two weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Foringer, sons, Wilbert and Gerald, spent a few days in Erie recently. Virginia Barger visited Judy Hartman of Mt. Airy last week. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bracken, Glenn and Dale of Viniondale, was Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ardell Kuhns. Other visitors were John Morey and Katherine Verba of Johnstown. March 7, 1957 Oil City Derrick SLIGO - Murphy Grange will exemplify the first and second degrees Tuesday, March 12, at Prosperity Grange, near Shippenville. The grange held its monthly meeting Friday evening with past master Glenn Slaughenaupt in charge. Nine officers, 24 adults and 10 juveniles were present. An appeal was read from Montmorenci Grange no. 1704 in Elk County for Sister Melva Okneiski who recently fell on the ice and broke her legs. A motion was made to send her $1. It was announced that Mrs. Orpha Carnahan is in the hospital and get well cards were signed to send to her and to Guy Hawk, Sligo, recently discharged from the hospital. During the lectures hour, under the direction of Mildred Myers, Truth or Consequences was played as the evening's entertainment. A poem, written by Lydia Slaugenhaupt, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Harold Master of Sligo RD1, who are moving to Atlanta, Georgia, was read. Mrs. Grace Wassum, Mrs. Evelyn Barto and Mrs. Clara Ecker attended Pomona at Washington Grange last Saturday. The regular meeting will be held on Friday, March 15.
5/9/1957 Memorial Day Parade Slated at Sligo by Naomi Summerville, Derrick Correspondent [American Legion] SLIGO - Plans for the Memorial Day parade in Sligo were completed at the Wednesday, May 1, meeting of the Sligo post to the American Legion, according to commander A.E. Klingensmith. Two reserve units from Clarion have been secured to march in the parade as well as the Troop 68, Explorer Scouts from Sligo, a membership from the Legion post in Rimersburg, and the Union Joint Band. Color guards from the Sligo post will lead the parade which will form at the fire hall at 10:30 a.m. Memorial Day. Commander Klingensmith stated the parade will begin about 10:30 or 11 a.m. From the fire hall it will proceed to the cemetery where a three-gun salute will be made honoring our veterans. Secured as the speaker at the cemetery is H. Ray Pope, a Clarion attorney. Mr. Pope has not named the subject on which he will speak but stated it will be a talk on Memorial Day. Following Mr. Pope's address, the Legion will award a local eighth grade boy a scholarship medal. The local eighth grade teacher will choose the boy to receive the medal. The local auxiliary unit has charge of awarding a local eighth grade girl the scholarship medal. Eighteen Legionnaires attended the meeting Wednesday evening, Commander Klingensmith stated. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5. [Methodist] The WSCS of the Sligo Methodist Church, at their meeting Wednesday evening, May 1, planned a family fellowship dinner to be held beginning at 6 p.m. in the Methodist Hall, Tuesday, May 14. Mrs. Miriam Pierce, president, conducted the meeting, at which 16 were present. She stated the dinner will be held for the church fellowship and will be tureen style. The mite box opening will be made following the dinner. Wednesday evening's program was in charge of Dimple Burns and Linda Wagner. Hostesses were Blanche Silvis and Rachel Burns. Election of the secretary and treasurer was held at the meeting. Lulu Larimer was chosen secretary while Alice Hartman was re-elected treasurer. Evelyn McKee is vice president. The next regular meeting of the WSCD will be held Wednesday, June 5. [Girl Scouts] Brownie Scout Troop under the leadership of Miriam Pierce, at their meeting Thursday afternoon, May 2, gained a new member, Susan Buzzard. At the meeting Thursday, the girls turned in their parents consent slips and are now ready to be registered as Brownies or Intermediates. They opened their meeting with a flag ceremony, roll call and paid their weekly and national dues. With the help of their leader, the girls finished their letter holders and closed their meeting by playing games. They will meet again next Thursday in the ME Hall. [Boy Scouts] Explorer Troop 68 of Sligo, at their regular weekly meeting, Wednesday May 1, made plans to attend Camp Coffman this summer during the first week in August. The troop met in the fire hall under the leadership of Don Stemmerich, Russell Heeter and Dick Wiser. There were 27 boys present. Leader Stemmerich announced that the candy the boys will sell in a house-to-house canvass soon in Sligo has arrived and the sale will be conducted as soon as necessary plans are made. Following the business portion of the meeting, the boys divided into their patrols and each practiced their own scouting skills, compass, fire building, and morse code. A new patrol is working on Tenderfoot requirements. In closing the meeting, one of the patrols furnished refreshments after which the boys went to the school gym and played basketball. For next week's meeting, the boys and their leader and co-leaders will leave Sligo at 5:30 p.m. for Beaver Dam, above Marienville. [Church] Rev. and Mrs. Paul Dunlap, minister and wife of the Sligo Methodist Church and daughter Paulette took Mrs. Blanche Silvis and Mrs. Miriam Pierce and daughter, Jill, recently to the Clarion County Hymn Sing at East Brady. Mr. and Mrs. Claire Bracken also attended and were accompanied by Mrs. Lulu Larimer and Mrs. Orvis Larimer. A group from the local Nazarene Church was also represented. All rendered special numbers. The week of May 5 through May 12 has been designated family week in the Methodist Church. Monroe Chapel is observing the week with a Fellowship dinner and program to be held Wednesday evening, May 8. The annual Carnation Sale sponsored by the Young Adult Class of the Sligo Methodist Church is now in progress. Anyone wishing to purchase a carnation for Mother's Day may contact any member of the Young Adult Class. [Baseball] Richard "Dick" Wiser, manager of the Sligo baseball team, has announced that Sligo will be members of the Mountain League for the ensuing baseball season. It was in this league last year that the ball club placed second. However, in the four team post season play-off, the ball team won first place, winning four out of four games. Mr. Wiser met with other members of the Mountain League team last week when they set up the forthcoming schedule. Sixteen members of the ball club were present for the first meeting, those members being from the Sligo-Rimersburg area. They planned to begin a fund-raising campaign to finance the club's equipment. It is anticipated that the club will purchase new uniforms this season. The manager and team will gratefully accept any donations. [Methodist] The CIC Class of the Sligo Methodist Church reports it had about 125 in attendance at the annual Spring Swiss steak dinner held Tuesday evening, April 30, in the M.E. Hall. The ladies of the class served the dinner which consisted of mashed potatoes, tossed salad, vegetable, relishes, angel food cake and ice cream as well as a slice of home-style Swiss steak. The ladies of the class thank all who attended their dinner. Chairmen of the kitchen committee were Mrs. Rachel Burns and Mrs. Marie Johnson. Chairman of the dining room committee was Mrs. Kay Hetrick. [Scouts] During the past month, the Colonel Drake Council, BSA, has been holding training classes for Troop Scoutmasters, their assistants and committeemen, which covers the entire phase of scouting, from the Cub Scout Pack, the Boy Scout Troop through Explorer Scouting. Attending a number of these sessions has been the local Explorer leader, Donald Stemmerich and his assistants, Russell Heeter and Richard Wiser. The men have stated they feel they have gained considerable knowledge of scouting and plan to apply this knowledge to the operation of the present troop program. Mr. Stemmerich stated that he hopes the Scout Committee can actively participate in a fund raising program for the unit in the near future in order to buy much-needed equipment and provide sufficient funds to send the boys to summer camp. 6/8/1957 Americanism Medals Awarded to Sligo Youths - by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Terry Wiser and Janet Culbertson, both students in the eighth grade at Sligo school, were awarded the Americanism medal by the Sligo post of the American Legion at services conducted in Sligo on Memorial Day. Terry, 14, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wiser. He is a member of the Junior High basketball team. Janet, also 14, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Culbertson of Rimersburg RD1. She is a majorette in the school band. Awarding Terry with the medal was S.H. McCormack, who was emcee for the Memorial Day services in Sligo. Zelma McKinney presented Janet with her award. The Memorial Day services in Sligo opened with a parade which formed at the Sligo fire hall at 10:30 a.m. The parade proceeded to the cemetery where services were held and H. Ray Pope, a Clarion attorney, spoke. Rev. Schwab of Callensburg gave the opening and closing prayers. Thirty six members were present for the May 27 meeting of the Lady Priscilla Rebekah Lodge at which noble grand, Garnet Henry, presided. Following the business meeting, a Memorial service was conducted for the late Mrs. Bernice Myers, a former member. Several correspondences were read by the secretary with no immediate action being taken. A silent auction followed the meeting netting the group $26.25. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 10. A family dinner was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoover of Rimersburg recently. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. James Hoover, Alfred, Kathryn, Ann, Shirley Henry and Nancy Fagley of Sligo, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wetzel, Gerald and Martha, Mrs. Mildred Hoover and Kay of Knox, Mr. and Mrs. George Hoover, Larry, Jerry, Terry, and Mary of Monroe, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Pollock, Gwendolyn and Melanie and Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Hoover and Darlene of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mohr and Terri Lee of Rimersburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoover, Dennis, Diane, and Karen of Rimersburg. The May meeting of the Missionary Society of the Sligo Prebyterian Church was held recently in the church social rooms. Twelve members were present when the president, Mrs. Zelma McKinney, presided. Mrs. McKinney also presented the devotions and lesson in the absence of the appointed leaders. The topic for the evening was "Christ's Way Every Day, Through All Our Days." Donations for the evening amounted to $17.71. Hostesses were Hazel Runyan, Miriam Kuhns, and Hazel Runyan. The society will meet again on June 13. There will be no meeting of the Dorcas Class of the Presbyterian Church of Sligo in July as that month is designated as vacation month. The announcement was made at the June meeting held Tuesday evening, June 4. Nine members were present: Pauline Greenawalt, Jay Craig, Lois Stewart, Ella Conner, Judy Slaugenhaupt, Velma Stewart, Mary Fagley, Dorothy Hoover, and Hazel Runyan. Evening's donations amounted to $4.10. Mrs. Greenawalt, the president, distributed the items the class had ordered to sel, pepper, food coloring, assorted powder, onions and garlic. Hostesses were Hazel Runyan and Velma Stewart.

11/2/1957 Oil City Derrick, Saturday, Nov. 2, 1957 — Junior Class Play to Be Given in Sligo by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - The Junior Class play of the Union Joint Sligo and Rimersburg High School classes will be Friday, Nov. 22. The play, "Strictly Formal" is directed by Kathleen Dunmire. Practice for the play are was recently started in preparation for its November presentation. Characters in the play are portrayed by the following: Jane, Emma Sherman, Rimersburg; Sally, her friend, Patty Culbertson, Sligo; Agnes, the maid, Donna Sherman, Sligo; Mrs. Cutler, her father, Cloyd Lerch, Sligo; Mrs. Cutler, her mother, Jodie Yates, Sligo; Mrs. Aikens, a neighbor, Art Eshbaugh, Rimersburg; Jim, Sally's boy friend, Ron Smith, Sligo. Rose Tilton, Garnet Beck, Sligo; Mrs. Tilton, Janet Schreckengost, Rimersburg; Josie Tilton, her kid sister, Carol Walls, Rimersburg; Elroy, who likes to put the shot, John Galbraith, Rimersburg. George, Jane's boy friend, Mark Stewart, Sligo; Marcia, a triple threat from New York, Shirley Tremba, Rimersburg; Cindy Collins, a girl with ideas, Virginia Barger, Rimersburg; Marilyn, after Elroy, Marilyn Shirey, Sligo; and Lt. bob Cunningham, John Wameldorf, Rimersburg. Sligo High students enjoyed a record hop last week, announced Mr. Guesmon, principal. The event was held as one of the scheduled activities in the school curriculum. Sligo Girl Scouts cancelled their meeting Wednesday for the second week due to illness. They plan a Halloween party for their next meeting. Each boy attending the Wednesday meeting of the Sligo Boy Scout Troop 68 donated 10c to the World Friendship Trust, announced their leader, Don Stemmerich. A total of $2.40 was collected for the fund. Wendell H. Shnaff of Shippenville, Clarion County Soil Conservation worker, was a guest for the evening. He showed movies taken at the Boy Scout encampment at Valley Forge and talked to the 21 scouts present. His topic centered on the scouting program in general. This week the troop has planned a swimming party at the Oil City YMCA. They will hold a brief meeting before leaving for Oil City. Final plans for the hayride, wiener roast and collection for UNICEF were made at the Sunday meeting of the MYF of Sligo and Cherry Run Methodist Churches. Monroe Chapel will participate in the hayride and roast. Homes in the Sligo area were called upon from 7 to 8 p.m. for UNICEF funds. Mrs. Don Stemmerich, leader, stated the message for the evening was "Blessed Are the Peacemakers." Following the message, six young people, Bonnie Taylor, Garnet Beck, Judy Hartman, Terry Wiser, Tom Morris and John Muir, held a panel discussion on the evening's message. Bible Study Books were distributed at Sunday's meeting and assignments made. Another highlight of the meeting was the election of officers with Judy Hartman being elected president of the fellowship. Sandra Sedgwick was elected vice president, Sue Burns, secretary, Garnet Beck, treasurer, ad Dean McMaster, publicity. Three program area chairmen were also selected, christian faith and witness, chairman Ray McDowell, christian outreach and citizenship, chairman, Bonnie Taylor and christian fellowship, Gordon Stewart. Tentative plans were made to hold a council meeting to plan programs for the next six months. The meeting closed with a prayer. Alternate plans were made to hold a party in the ME hall in case of rain or too cold weather Wednesday evening. Sue Burns and Bonnie Taylor were named in charge of entertainment should the hay ride be called off and a party held in its place. The Methodist fall fair and sale scheduled for last Tuesday was cancelled due to illness in this area. The C.L.C. class meeting was also cancelled and will e held Thursday, Nov. 21. The MYF of the Sligo and Cherry Run Churches met Sunday evening in the church hall with 20 members present. Mrs. Don Stemmerich, leader, was in charge and gave the evening message, "Every Task Demands Prayer." There were no representatives from Cherry Run at the meeting therefore election of officers was postponed until next Sunday. Bonnie Taylor gave a talk on homemaking. Other vocations were also discussed. Mrs. Stemmerich announced that plans for the hay ride were about completed. Cherry Run, Monroe and Sligo youth will participate in the event Wednesday, Oct. 30. Following the meeting, refreshments were served by Garnet Beck and Donna Sherman. Nineteen Sligo Brownies enjoyed a Halloween party Friday afternoon in the Sligo ME Hall. The girls, under the diretion of Mrs. Virginia and Mrs. Jean Wiser, played Halloween games. A lunch of cupcakes and kool-aid was served to the girls by Mrs. Dick Whisner, Mrs. Harold Gathers and Mrs. Susan Kunselman. A treat was enjoyed by the girls donated by Mrs. Helen Callen and Mrs. Jean Wiser. A short meeting was held Thursday by Sligo Intermediates. Only 10 girls were present and received catalogues from which they may order scouting equipment. Mrs. Miriam Pierce and Mrs. Aida Morris were in charge. Mrs. Morris conducted games. Sunday's sermon topics used by Rev. C.F. Hunt, pastor of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene were, morning "Sanctification" and evening, "Lost from Infernity." Rev. and Mrs. Hunt just returned from the Pittsburgh district meeting of the Church of the Nazarene in Sharpsville. Rev. Hunt stated a large crowd attended the conference at which T.W. Willingham of Kansas City, Mo. spoke as guest speaker. Considering the amount of illness in the area, revival services at Monroe chapel were well attended, announced the pastor, Rev. J. Lee Gorman. Guest minister was Rev. John Creek of Zelienople. Rev. and Mrs. J. Lee Gorman, Sligo and Rev. and Mrs. Mervin Schwab of Callensburg attended the ministers breakfast in the Clarion Methodist Church Tuesday. Rev. Gorman was a Washington D.C. visitor Monday and Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Dorothy Forsythe, Mrs. Madge McElravy and Mrs. Elizabeth Silves, members of the nominating committee of the missionary society of the Silgo Presbyterian Church met at the Silves home recently. Officers for the ensuing year were selected to be brought before the group for consideration at their next regular session, Tuesday, November 19. Worthy Matron, Mrs. Martha Moggy and other officers of the Sligo Order of the Eastern Star, attended the banquet and district meeting of * of the Eastern Star held at Punxatawney[sic], Monday, Oct. 21. Members of the Sligo Presbyterian Church attending the Clarion district. Presbyterial meeting held at the Callensburg Church on Wednesday, Oct. 16 were Mrs. Elizabeth Silves, Mrs. Madge McElravy, Mrs. Dorothy Hoover and Mrs. Elizabeth Erickson. Registration was at 9:30 a.m. with 82 persons registering for the days session. Mrs. Edward Adams of Seoul, Korea was the guest speaker. Mrs. Adams is the wife of the Board of Foreign Missions Field Representative in Korea. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Wensel visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Elliott and family of Youngstown, Ohio. While in New York City the latter part of the week Hunter Silves called at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Silves and family of that city. The Union Joint PTA will meet Monday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sligo High School auditorium. The program promises to be most interesting with a symposium by Mrs. Susan Kunselman and Miss Beverly McDowell, and also a question box. A box will be placed at the entrance of the auditorium and all members are invited to submit questions which the teachers will attempt to answer. Mrs. George Summerville was admitted in the Brookville Hospital, Sunday, Oct. 20.
11/16/1957 Sligo MYF Has Meet by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Sligo area M.Y.F. met Sunday evening in the Methodist Hall with Rev. and Mrs. J. Lee. Garmon, pastor of the church, and discussed the various activities they plan to carry out in the future. Eighteen youths attended and sang several songs. Mrs. Garmon gave the lesson, "Peace, Its Christians." They will meet again this Sunday. "Redemptive Fellowship" was the theme of a Methodist ministers meeting held in the Sligo ME Hall Monday. Rev. James Cox of Knox was the leader. Attending were 21 ministers, their wives and families from the sub-district. Discussion during the day dwell on fellowship problems with which ministers are confronted. Ladies of the W.S.C.S. served the luncheon to those attending. Serving were Mrs. Evelyn Wensel, Mrs. Miriam Peirce, and Mrs. Lulu Larimer, also serving were Patty Simpson and Judy Wagner. Judy and Patty had charge of the nursery during the meeting. During the luncheon, Mrs. Grenci sang a special number. Rev. Redfoot led the devotions. Attending were Rev. and Mrs. James McIntosh, Clarion; Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Richardson, Clarion; Rev. and Mrs. Victor Redfoot, Kathy and Danny, East Brady; Rev. Allaman, Rimersburg; Rev. and Mrs. Nick Grenci and Wanda, Shippenville; Rev. and Mrs. Tom Johnson, New Bethlehem; Rev. and Mrs. Mervin Schwab, Callensburg and Rev. and Mrs. John Schaefer, Strattanville. Union Jointure held its monthly school board meeting Tuesday evening. A report on the progress of the new school was made. The meeting was relatively short, lasting only 45 minutes, authorities said.
11/20/1957 Oil City Derrick — Sligo Lodge Holds Meet by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Lady Priscilla Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting in the IOOF Hall recently, with noble grand Helen McCall presiding. During the business meeting, plans for the annual Christmas party were discussed. The date set for the party was December 9 and each member is asked to bring a guest as in previous years. Sixteen officers and several members were present. Following the meeting, the entertainment committee led in games. Hostesses were Orpha Elliott, Mildred Myers and Helen Weaver. The November meeting of the Dorcas Class of the Sligo Presbyterian Church was held recently in the home of Mrs. Jane Stewart. President, Mrs. Pauline Greenawalt, conducted the business meeting when plans were made for the class to serve the Willing Workers Class of the church at its annual banquet. Fourteen members attended including Pauline Greenawalt, Velma Stewart, Hazel Runyon, Dorothy Hoover, Norene Burns, Avonelle Neal, Nettie Miller, Ruth McLuckie, Lorraine Stewart, Margaret Whitman, Hazel Kiester, Betty Bowser, Lois Stewart and June Stewart. Hostesses for the evening were June Stewart and Flossie Rea. In the absence of Mrs. Rea, Mrs. Avonelle Neal assisted Mr. Stewart. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Petri of Erie are the parents of a daughter weighing 6 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. The baby, born November 5, has been named Sherri Lee. Mrs. Petri is the former Thelma Greenawalt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Meade Greenawalt of Sligo.
11/20/1957 — 31 Attend Sligo Legion Regular Auxiliary Meeting by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - The American Legion Auxiliary to the Elliott-Gathers McKee Post 149 of the American Legion met recently in the IOOF Hall, Sligo. The meeting was conducted by the unit president, Mrs. Ila Meier. The Sergeant of Arms, Mrs. Margaret Wensel, displayed the flag. This was followed by a Thanksgiving Prayer by Mrs. Evelyn Wensel, in the absence of the Chaplain, Mrs. Margaret Stewart. The group then joined in the salute to the flag and the singing of one verse of our National Anthem. Roll call showed five officers, 26 members and guests present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. Dimple Burns, and approved as read. Mrs. Meier reported that the unit had in the past year paid out over $300 for aid in the rehabilitation of the veteran or his family, besides the several local activities to which they have contributed. The unit was informed recently that as of November 1, they ranked second in membership in the district. All members are urged to attend the meetings and see that their 1958 dues are paid so that the unit quota may be met. The members agreed to again support the Pennsylvania Annual Christmas Gift Program for Hospitalized Veterans throughout Pennsylvania. During reports of committees, Mrs. Lois Stewart, Americanism Chairman, gave an interesting resume of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Grace Newell, coupon chairman, distributed lists of the new coupons now redeemable and urged that the members turn them in to her promptly. She explained how the unit put these coupons to valuable use toward the rehabilitation of our veterans. A unit member, Mrs. Pearl Gween was reported a patient in the Ridgway Hospital. The annual Christmas Party was announced for the December 11 meeting. Members are asked to bring a guest, a gift for each family member present and a covered dish. Entertainment will be provided by the local Girl Scout Troops. The meeting was closed by the reading of a Thanksgiving poem by Mrs. Meier. A social hour followed with the hostesses, Mrs. Ila Meier, Mrs. Emma Rhea and Mrs. Margaret Craig serving the lunch. Games were played under the supervision of Ways and Means Committee, Mrs. Ruth Sherman, Mrs. Zelda Love and Mrs. Lois Stewart. The auxiliary this year again will contribute to the Christmas package fund. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Greenawalt of Sligo RD are the parents of a daughter, Terry Lynn, born November 12 in Brookville Hospital. Terry Lynn, weighing 6 pounds, 12 ounces, is the Greenawalt's first child and the first grandchild for Mrs. Greenawalt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Myers. She is the first grandchild for Mr. and Mrs. Greenawalt, the paternal grandparents. Terry's birth has made Mrs. Amy Wensel of Sligo, Ivan Myers' great-grandmother, a great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Greenawalt is the former Beverly Myers. Mr. and Mrs. Ford Summerville and Frank Reisen of Washington, D.C., were Saturday guests of Wilson Summerville family. Oil City Derrick
11/20/1957 Cook School Set Tonight in Sligo by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - A cooking school will be held in the Sligo M.E. Hall tonight. The school will be sponsored by the Sligo Hardware, Ralph Burris, manager, announced and will begin at 8 p.m. Mrs. Susan Bryner, West Penn Power Company home economist will give Thanksgiving hints during the evening. She will be demonstrating electric cooking. The public is invited to attend. In the recent election, elected to posts in Sligo Borough were the following: Fred L. Burns and L. Dana Logue, both Republicans and unopposed, were re-elected as school directors. For Council, Charles Slater, Ray Gathers, Ralph McKinney and Ralph Burris were elected, all on write-in votes. There were 61 additional write-ins, divided among numerous candidates. Howard Terwilliger was elected burgess running on both tickets, receiving 240 votes. For inspector of elections, Evelyn Mead, (D), 137; Bess Craig (R), 130. For judge of election, Mary Fagley received 57 write-ins. Art Lewis was elected as tax collector, Fred Kling, justice of the peace, and Richard Henry, borough auditor.
1/9/1958 Sligo Presbyterian Sunday School Officers Elected by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Sunday School officers were elected in the Sligo Presbyterian Church during this week's regular Sunday School hour. Carl Heeter was elected superintendent with Jerry Snyder as his assistant. Janet Beck was elected recording secretary; Carlton Murray, secretary-treasurer; Dorothy Forsythe as Missionary and Home Department head; Elizabeth Silvis as temperance superintendent; Rachel Heeter, pianist; and Ruth Gallagher, cradle roll. Noreene Burns was elected superintendent of the junior department with Pauline Greenawalt as her assistant. Janie Slater was named pianist. Sligo MYF and Westminster Fellowship met Sunday evening in the ME Hall. They opened the meeting with group singing, Mrs. Donald Stemmerich, leader, was in charge. Twenty-one youths were present. Charlyene Kuhns led the devotional period reading from Mark. Mrs. Stemmerich conducted the business portion of the meeting during which the group discussed as planned activity for January, final deciding on holding an ice skating party. As January is march of Dimes month, the members are asked to consider ways in which money can be raised toward the campaign. Bible study books were assigned and a lesson given for the January 12 meeting. Rev. J. Lee Gormon, pastor of the Sligo Methodist Church, has offered the church hall to Rev. C.F. Hunt, pastor of the Sligo Church of the Nazarene, as a place to hold Sunday services during the time the Nazarene Church is being renovated. Sunday services were first scheduled for the Sligo Fire Hall. Recent guests of the George Summervilles were Mr. and Mrs. James Slack and children of Whitney Point, N.Y., former residents of Rimersburg RD. Mr. and Mrs. John Coachman and Paul and Bob of Karns City, Nancy and Bonnie Hawk, Rimersburg, and Mrs. and Mrs. Lewis Greenawalt, Sligo, were dinner guests recently of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Greeanwalt, Barbara, and Sonny. Mrs. John McKinney and Carolyn spent last weekend with the Don McKinneys in Youngstown. Mr. and Mrs. Craig Stewart of Rimersburg celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently. More than 100 friends and relatives from Beaver, Oil City, Beaver Falls, Butler, Rimersburg, Sligo and Curllsville attended open house in their home. Mrs. Stewart is the former Edith Traister. The couple exchanged wedding vows December 18, 1907 in Kittanning. They have six children, Phyllis Heeter, Alberta Dunkle and Keith Stewart, Clarion, Eugene of Rimersburg, Maxine Hill and Marilyn Farcht, Butler. They also have nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
1/9/1958 59 Attend PTA Meet in Sligo by Naomi Summerville SLIGO - Fifty-nine members were present at the January meeting of the Union Joint PTA held in the Sligo Auditorium recently. Guest speaker was Merle (Bud) Wiser, Clarion County District Attorney, who spoke on "Legislation Affecting the Parent and Teacher." Following his address comments were heard from Ivan Young, a teacher in the Sligo School, and B.G. Corliss, principal of the Union Joint School. Mrs. James Hoover, president, conducted the meeting. Devotions were given by Rev. Benjamin McLuckie, pastor of the Sligo Presbyterian Church. The membership chairman, Mrs. Hazel Myers, reported 187 members enrolled at this time. Mrs. Hoover stated that the membership is below that of last year and urged parents to come out and support the organization. The attendance award for December was presented to Grade 11 of the Sligo school. Herbert Radaker is the teacher. Hostesses for the evening was Carwick School, serving sandwiches and coffee. The meeting was closed with the reading of a poem by Mrs. Hoover. The next scheduled meeting of the PTA is at 7:30 p.m. February 3 in the Rimersburg school auditorium. It will feature the Founder's Day program with Mrs. Velma Milner, Jr. in charge. Hostesses will be grades one and two of the Rimersburg school. |
