Casper W. Tyler

biography

CASPER W. TYLER was born in Bridgewater, near Montrose Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, May, 1837. He was educated at private schools and learned the printing trade at Montrose. Here he continued at the trade, meanwhile prosecuting his studies and reading law, in the office of Little & Streeter, until his admission to the bar. In 1861 he went west and lived at St. Paul, Minnesota, until 1862. During the summer of that year he returned to Montrose and assisted in raising a company of volunteers, and was made Captain, joining the 141st Reg't, Pennsylvania Volunteers. After the battle of Gettysburg, in which he was severely wounded, he was elected major. During his army experience he was with the Army of the Potomac under Burnside, Hooker and Grant. At the battle of Chancellorsville, he was slightly wounded. He was with Grant in his famous closing campaign of the war, but was forced to resign on account of impaired health, just before the capitulation of Lee, being at the time lieutenant colonel of his regiment. After his return from the army he engaged in the practice of law at Montrose, remaining there two years. He then came to Meadville, and bought an interest in the Republican. Two years latter selling out, he purchased an interest in the Crawford Journal and became proprietor in 1870. This he continued until 1872 when he engaged in the practice of his profession, in co-partnership with Douglass & McCoy. Retiring from the firm soon after, he has since formed no partnership in his practice. In 1877 he was elected to the Pennsylvania Legislature from Crawford county. Since the expiration of his term he has been engaged in the practice of law exclusively.
