HENRY SARTORIUS was born at Hesse-Castle, Germany, October 15th, 1834. He was educated at a Polytechnic school, Germany, and learned the jewelers and engraver's
trade at his native place. He came to the United States January 1860, and remained at New York until the outbreak of the war of the rebellion. He then enlisted in Company E, 20th regiment, New York Volunteers, under Colonel Max Webber, and served two years. He was a participant in the historic "Seven Days Fight," and was an eyewitness of the strange battle between the Merrimac and Monitor, and took the first sketch of the same, which was published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly. Being discharged from the service, he traveled for some years working at his trade and lithographing, coming to Meadville in 1868, where he has. been engaged in the jewelry
business since. Mr. Sartorius is at present stage manager of the Germania Mannerchor Musical and Dramatic Society. In connection with his occupation as jeweler and engraver, he has taught private classes in drawing. He was married February, 1860, to Mary Graham, a native of the town of his own birth.
