Baker—Killed
by a fall from the cars at Eureka, Nev. Oct, 19, 1879. Cos. W. Baker,
oldest son of B.W. and Belinda Baker, of Summerhill, aged 36 years.
Intelligence
has been received here of the death of Mr. Cos. W.
Baker, oldest son of Mr. B.W. Baker,
of Summerhill, who was killed from a fall from the cars near his home in
Eureka, Nevada, on the 19thof October. He had become nearly blind from
neuralgia and it is supposed that this was the cause of a misstep which
proved fatal. A report of his death was received a few weeks since, but
was afterwards contradicted, and a man of the same name living in the same
vicinity was supposed to have been the victim, but later intelligence
confirms the sad news at first received. Mr. Baker was a gallant soldier
in the late war, and in the seven days battle before Richmond was shot
through the body and left for dead on the field. His death was reported to
his family here and arrangements were being made for his funeral when the
news was received that he had fallen into the hands of the rebels and was
alive. On his return from the army, he went West and has not been home in
the intervening fifteen years. He was intending to have returned last
month to make his home with his parents to look after them in their
declining years. The blow to them is indeed a sad one, and they, as well
as the other bereaved ones, have the sympathy of all.
