Pine Township

Pine Township

Pine is an interior township, and was formed in 1847, and derives its name from the forest of pine trees within its limits. It contains 6,369 square acres, a large area being covered by the Pymatuning swamp. Agriculture and lumbering form the chief pursuits of the people, who in 1870 numbered 777.

The settlement of this locality was begun about 1798, and Robert Graham came to the northern part in 1802, and Samuel Glenn in 1811, and Amos Line located on the site of the town that bears his name, in 1818 The first frame building in the township was a grist mill erected by Jabez Colt, at Linesville, in 1800. The first church of logs was built in the north-eastern part of the township in 1818. The first school was taught in the same part in a log house, in 1824, by Joseph Line. At present there are four schools, with an attendance of about 80 pupils. The expense each year averages about $450. The only borough in the township is Linesville.
