All Erie County Cemeteries

Smith and related surname Burials

Contributed by Susan Smith

The information provided below is the result of research on the SMITH surname in Erie County and related allied families, and has been submitted for presentation here by Susan Smith. The listings have been extracted from LDS Church microfilm rolls 911843 and 911844. These rolls were put together prior to 1973 and they contain the Richard Cheney collection of Erie County cemetery readings. Susan actually had the microfilm in 1989 and went through it at that time looking for SMITH and other names of interest to her. Susan has provided the following additional background information:

In Florence Clint’s book, Erie County, Pennsylvania, area key: a guide to the genealogical records of Erie County, Pennsylvania, including maps, histories, charts, and other helpful materials / by Florence Clint. Denver: Area Keys, 1977, she includes a 1973 letter to her from Mr. Cheney along with 12 pages of his notes pertaining to the cemeteries. In the letter he says of his collection
"I have concentrated on the county cemeteries which are most in danger of being lost forever. (Many of them are gone today.) The larger cemeteries – which I have listed under Erie City, I have not bothered with – except Erie Cemetery – because their associations have complete records. …I have not done all of these cemeteries myself but have re-checked most of them. I have readings going back to 1920, which people before my time made, so by comparing various rubbings and checking myself, I have quite a complete record of many of the now-gone cemeteries."

Susan has indicated that she can't say for certain that she extracted every Smith, but has checked her work several times for errors. She suggests that if anyone finds names of interest that they may wish to rent the films themselves to check the information. The many cemetery transcription books put together by Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) could also be consulted. Cemetery names and placement in a particular township has been left as extracted from the microfilm. Many thanks go to Susan Smith for providing this extract.
