1810 Census of Manufacturers, Erie County PA

The United States Census of 1810 was the third Census conducted in the United States. It was conducted on August 6, 1810. The U.S. marshals and their assistants who took the census were instructed to obtain information about manufacturing. However, since they were not told what questions to ask, the information collected varied widely.

For the entire country there are many more categories. The information state by state can be obtained at http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/1810.htm.

“The period of the embargo and the War of 1812 was one in which public interest in manufacturing was greatly manifested. The most obvious reflections of this growing interest were the federal manufacturing censuses of 1810 and 1820. These censuses, heavily influenced by the pro-manufacturing rhetoric of the previous decades, were the first national efforts to identify and determine the size of the manufacturing sector in the new nation’s economy. They reflected the fluctuating definition of manufacturing, and they ultimately helped to redirect it away from older artisanal conceptions and toward the emerging notion of industrial capitalism.
