Contributed by Susan Smith
The information below was written and submitted by Susan Smith. It is based on 20 plus years of research on the Thomas Smith family who settled in Venango Township in 1802. Thomas and his wife, Sarah, had 12 children with 9 of them remaining in the Erie area. Susan hopes that her contribution of detailed information about one of the SMITH families will help other SMITH researchers. Below is the 'story' of one of the children. Any comments or questions about the article or this family should be sent directly to Susan.
#13. Harvey SMITH was born 29 Jun 1808 Venango Erie Co., PA, the 12th and last child of Thomas and Sarah SMITH. Harvey died 25 Feb 1878 in Blackberry Kane Co., IL; and is buried in Blackberry Cem Elburn Kane Co., IL. He married Sophiah SMITH 22 Jan 1833 in Venango Erie Co., PA. She was born 30 Mar 1816; died 16 Oct 1850 in Erie Co., PA; buried in Lawn Cem Wayne Erie Co., PA. She was a daughter of one of the four Smith families in Wayne township and no relation. Their marriage is listed in the records of the Middlebrook Church.
Prior to his father Thomas' death, Harvey had not purchased a farm. It's possible he was working the family farm until that time. In 1836, Mary (Harvey's sister) and Harvey divided up the family farm they inherited from their father. His will had instructed the division to be equal as to quantity, quality and advantages. There is nothing written to tell us how the decision was made. Harvey received the east 45 acres and Mary the west 55 acres. At the same time Harvey gave his mother 20 acres of his portion with the family homestead on it in return for releasing him of his obligation to care for her.
On September 23, 1836 he purchased 100 acres of land from his brother Robert. The tax assessment rolls show Mary's husband Thomas Robison farming the entire original farm after 1837. Harvey sold his portion to Thomas Robison after his mother Sarah's death and in 1865 his 100 acre farm also.
Harvey went to visit his brothers and other relatives in Illinois and Wisconsin at least twice. In a letter from David Smith to his son Oliver, in the winter of 1864-65, Harvey and Hetty, David's daughter, are visiting. While visiting his brother James in Kane Co, Ill in Feb 1878 Harvey died. He was buried in Elburn Cemetery on James' plot.
Nephew Samuel Robinson was named adminisrator of Harvey's estate. He died without leaving a will. There was one heir at law, Jaried or David Smith. The signature is difficult to read. Among the creditors of the estate are two from Illinois, niece Nancy Platt and nephew by marriage Perry Bowdish. Samuel Robinson charged the estate for trips to Illinois, Erie and Corry to settle Harvey's affairs. The heir may have lived in Corry.
The 1850 census lists Harvey, Sophia and Harvey Lyons living in Venango township. Sophia died later that year.
Buried adjacent to Harvey in Blackberry Cemetery IL is "Ellen D. Smith, daughter of H.L. and A., died 10 October 1865, age 11 years." Harvey may have married a second time and had a daughter. Harvey was visiting about that time (1865) in Illinois and Wisconsin. Harvey Lyons is too young to be her father.
