Erie County (PA) GENEALOGY

Old Welcome Page Notes

01.03.01 - 1 March 2001 . . . . . .

Welcome to the Erie County (PA) Genealogy Home Page! This site is a part of the USGenWeb and PAGenWeb projects. My name is Bill Klauk and I am the new County Coordinator for this site as of today.  I am taking over this task, and maintenance of this web site, from Mike Wennin who had been County Coordinator since the end of August 2000. I have been acting as Mike's Co-Coordinator since the start of 2001. Mike will continue to be involved as a contributor to the site, but will now concentrate his focus on his original Cameron County (PA) web site.  One of Mike's original goals was to breath some life into Erie County Genealogy, and fill it with data to help YOU with your family search.  Mike stated in his New Year letter - "With the help of many dedicated volunteers over the last four months of 2000, I believe that we are approaching that goal.  A considerable amount of information concerning Erie County genealogy (and history) has been added to the site, some older information has been refreshed, and the GenConnect query system & GenConnect document boards have been adopted. But much remains to be done!" Since January 1, 2001, Mike and I together have added even more information, and those posting directly to the GenConnect boards have added a HUGE amount of data.

I hope to continue in Mike's footsteps to make this web site a premier location for Internet research in Erie County, Pennsylvania. I plan to keep changes minor. Questions and/or information about the site may be directed to me - Bill Klauk - at ErieCoGenie@worldnet.att.net .

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!  The success of this and any other county site relies upon the generous contributions of information, data, photos, cemetery readings and much more from people like you.  Please contact me about any information you wish to share. No amount of information is too small or too big. We also need you to post your family information in the Query section; to sign the guest book so we know how we are doing; to provide your family photos for one of the several online photo albums; and to post your wills, deeds, pensions, obituaries, bible records and biographies in the appropriate sites. This is all about sharing in its purist form.  Doing the above will help you locate distant cousins and further your own genealogical research.  We also still need people to be listed as township coordinators - little work is involved as you only need to be a filter or point of contact for people looking for specific township information.  You do not have to live in the area to be a township coordinator, but it does help to have some knowledge of the township. As of today, people are still needed for Conneaut, Elk Creek, McKean, Franklin, Greene, Lawrence Park, North East, Amity and Wayne plus City of Erie and City of Corry. Send your name to Bill Klauk if you are interested.

PLEASE excuse our dust while we continue to work on the site.  Check back often to see what is new. Subscribe to the PAERIE-L e-mail list to keep up with what is happening.   It is hoped that those of you who are visiting this site will soon find information that is both useful and informative. Check back often and make use of the What's New feature below.

Bill Klauk . . . . . .

From my August 1st (2001) letter - A lot has happened in the last 6 weeks. The Zing photo album service that I had been using to display close to 1400 Erie County related photos discontinued operation on July 2nd. I believe I have removed all of the links but if you discover any, please let me know. The Rootsweb provided GenConnect Query and related Data Boards were discontinued by Rootsweb and a new combined Message Board was introduced by Rootsweb near the end of June. All of this was done with very little notice. Rootsweb and their parent company, MyFamily/Ancestry, has combined all Ancestry, MyFamily and GenConnect topic, surname and locality message boards, but unfortunately they did it with little input from the volunteer coordinators and board administrators. Immediate reaction from those county coordinators and users familiar with GenConnect was totally negative. But Rootsweb reacted and the system in place today is a vast improvement from a month ago. As a USGenWeb site, we are required to have a query system. I could implement a 'private' system that would take a lot of work, or I can use a tool provided. The Rootsweb Message Board seems to be the best of the available tools, so I am sticking with it. To all of you whose initial reaction was negative, or leaning toward negative, please revisit the message board. You can continue to provide feedback to me privately. If you have comments about the new system, please e-mail me a short message and if you have some suggestions I will pass them on to the Rootsweb staff and/or reply to you with my latest knowledge of the subject. If you do post a message to the Erie Co (PA) Rootsweb Message Board, please select the Classification "Queries" (which should soon be changed to Query and made the default) and fill in the Surname block with the surnames mentioned in your query. If you are posting DATA, such as an obituary, biography, marriage notice, census extract, will, deed, etc., please select the appropriate classification. If you are replying to a query with data, select the closest classification to the data. If you are asking a question in reply to posted data, select "Queries". Picture files may now be posted as an attachment to your Message Board item. Several examples have been posted. Rootsweb acknowledges they still have many issues to deal with concerning the Message Board and they are definitely still in a reactionary mode. But the system is there to be used and all queries and data previously posted to GenConnect has been carried over to the new system.

January 2002 . . . . . . . . .

Welcome to the Erie County (PA) Genealogy Home Page! This site is a part of the USGenWeb and PAGenWeb projects. My name is Bill Klauk and I am now into my 11th month as County Coordinator for this site.

Happy New Year to all as we enter a New Year - 2002. As many of you know, I have now completed my first full year in maintaining this site, even though I am only starting my 11th month as the full Coordinator. (I was Co-Coordinator with Mike Wennin for 2 months). We have come a long way in the past year, and I am expecting that we can go even further in 2002.

January is going to be used as a 'catch up month', meaning that I will not have a specific theme for the month. I will use the month to post material from all different themes that I never got around to doing in 2001. As I stated in December, "some reading this may have provided information to me which I never posted and for that I apologize. In most cases this material is probably still residing in some corner of my computer, and although I try to search for old material every month which I may have overlooked, I am always welcome to a gentle e-mail reminder to refresh my memory."

Repeating also from December, I would like to stop and give an extra big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed material to this web site during 2001, and to those whose prior contributions I inherited. I would also like to give a special thanks to those of you who have volunteered to assist me by being 'township coordinators'. Several of you have gone out of your way to provide 'more than expected' material, and several have provided guidance to me with regard to my now adopted structured approach to adding pages, and that is also greatly appreciated.

Future feature themes for February and beyond have not yet been determined, although they will include (not in any order) Census, Faces of Erie Co, Erie Co Military, Family Histories, Cemeteries, Churches and Schools plus other to be determined themes.

A brief word about my research policy. I spend a lot of time in the upkeep of this web site and I do not do personal research. I occasionally have a pet project that might result in a web page, or in some supporting digital photography, but I can not respond to personal requests. Please direct your questions (queries) to the query system (currently using Rootsweb Message Board), and/or to the PAERIE-L mail list described below. Also see my links to the Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) and to the Erie Co (Blasco) Library.

My goal is to make this web site a premier location for Internet research in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Questions and/or information about the site (but not research queries) may be directed to me - Bill Klauk - at ErieCoGenie@worldnet.att.net .

March 2002 . . . . . . . . .

Welcome to the Erie County (PA) Genealogy Home Page! This site is a part of the USGenWeb and PAGenWeb projects. My name is Bill Klauk and I have just completed my first year as the volunteer County Coordinator for this site. I believe it has been a good year, and although user contributions and my time and effort have been reduced over the last few months, I am hopeful that by this time in 2003 we can have a site at least 150 percent of today's size. This page has been visited close to 30,000 times in 12 months as per the counter provided by TheCounter.com, and a 'thank you' to all who visited. Hopefully many of you found something useful within these 400 plus pages.

And an even more special "Thank You" to those who have contributed. The success of this and any other county site relies upon the generous contributions of information, data, photos, cemetery readings, out of copyright book and article transcriptions, original research and much more from people like you.  Please contact me about any information you wish to share. No amount of information is too small or too big.

Shortly after taking over responsibility for this web site, several people discussed with me the idea of a monthly theme. Except for January (which was a catch up month), I have been running a monthly theme where I have been mainly posting material related to that theme. Of course, if I receive material on any subject that can be posted with minimal effort, then I will do so. My theme for March and April 2002 will be two returning themes which are closely tied together - Family Histories and Faces of Erie County. Please see the index pages for these subjects to get an idea of the type of material that would or could be posted. Then, if you think you have something to contribute, please contact me about it.

May theme will pick up on Census records. Although we have quite a number of census records already posted, there are many more transcriptions that could be done. June and beyond themes have not been determined, although they will include (not in any order) Erie Co Military, Cemeteries, Churches and Schools plus others.

Also see my links to the Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) and to the Erie Co (Blasco) Library - both of these organizations provide research services at reasonable rates.

My goal is to make this web site a premier location for Internet research in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Questions and/or information about the site (but not research queries) may be directed to me - Bill Klauk - at ErieCoGenie@worldnet.att.net .

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!  As mentioned above, the contribution of any type of material and/or information related to Erie County people of the past is what makes the site what it is. This is all about sharing in its purist form. Contributing can often lead to finding distant cousins, prompting others who may have similar but different material to contribute, and to furthering your own genealogical research.

We also still need people to be listed as township coordinators - little work is involved as you only need to be a filter or point of contact for people looking for specific township information.  You do not have to live in the area to be a township coordinator, but it does help to have some knowledge of the township. People are still needed for Franklin, Greene, Lawrence Park, and Wayne plus City of Corry. Send your name to Bill Klauk if you are interested.

Check back often and make use of the What's New feature below. And please excuse the frequent changes, but in this ever growing site, change will always be with us. Happy Genealogical Hunting!

From the February 2003 Welcome letter
I do apologize to all those dedicated volunteers who are awaiting their material to be posted, but as the volunteer who maintains this site, I must remind everyone, including myself, that there are times when other matters take priority. From December: "I have not had much free time to post a lot of the material that has been provided to me, and have quite a number of my own things that still need to be scanned and then in most cases converted to text. The scanning of the 1908 history of St John's Lutheran Church and listings from the old Central Presbyterian Church will continue. I am also slowly working on reorganizing the legacy query and surname archives pages that were inherited from the "old" web pages. This is a long term project, but I would like to get some organization to more recently submitted material."
