The Historical Society's Bible collection contains over 170 Bibles. The collection ranges in age from the oldest, printed in 1620, to the most recent, from 1954. 1 1857 Cruce 12 x 9.5 x 2.5 Front and back cover have fallen off. Binding is weak and broke in one place. General browning of pages, first few pages are damaged, and some pages are loose. Genealogy of births and some deaths pasted into inside of front cover.
2 1892 Burns, Geletka, Miller, Lydick 12.5 x 10 x 3 Previous attempt to tape cover back on. Binding is falling apart and many pages are loose especially in the beginning of bible. Newspaper articles cut out and pasted on back pages of bible. There are also newspaper clippings of soldiers from W.W. II that include John Sylvester Geletka, Richard L. Burns, Lisle Wilbur Miller, and Robert C. Lydick in between pages 14-15.
3 Unknown None listed 11.5 x 9.25 x 3 Binding is weak and broken in several places. Spot damage and browning to all pages. There was a previous attempt to tape detached sections of book back together. General cover wear. None.
4 1947 None listed 8 x 5.5 x 2.5 Cover is in bad condition with pieces falling off. However, inside page and binding are in very good condition. None.
5 1873 Mitchell 6.25 x 4 x 1.25 Cover has fallen off and a few pages are loose. Otherwise good condition. The name Jennie M. Mitchell is inscribed on the cover. Additionally, Jennie M. Mitchell Indiana, Pa is signed on two inside pages.
6 Unknown None listed 7.25 x 5.25 x 1.5 General wear on cover. Otherwise good condition. Some items have been underlined and circled throughout the text.
7 1850 Wachob 7.75 x 4.75 x 2.25 Front and back cover have fallen off and there was a previous attempt to tape them back on. Some pages are loose and have spot damage. The name Mary M. Wachob is written inside the front cover. Text is written in German.
8 1848 Kells 11.25 x 9 x 2.75 Binding is deteriorated and pages are lose. Front and back cover have had previous attempt to be taped back on. There is spot damage on the pages and a few torn pages have been taped back together. Note inside bible says the bible belongs to Mary Kells' half sister Hugh A. Kells. (This note is a bit confusing). There is also a Certificate of Admission to Sunday School of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Livermore for Hough and Jackson. Hugh Kells signed inside cover and the name Rebecca Kells is stamped on back page.
9 Unknown Houck 11 x 9 x 2.5 Some pages are loose and lots of spot damage throughout the bible. Front and back cover are falling off and the first few pages of bible are missing. Label inside indicates this bible is a part of the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana, Pa's Frances S. Helman Collection. Hand written inside that this bible belongs to Darcus McElhoes Houck.
10 Unknown None listed 10.75 x 7.25 x 2 Missing back cover and pages 1-82 as well as some unknown number of pages from the back of the book. Front cover has fallen off and overall condition is bad. None.
11 1620 Fistabrooke, Miller, Sutton, Walker, Weld, Willardi 11.5 x 8 x 2 Some page spotting and general cover wear. Otherwise good condition. Written in Old English. Gift to the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana, Pa from Mr. and Mrs. Donald Miller. There is a page with signatures of past owners and dates. Some that are readable include: Habyah Weld 1751, Benjamin Fistabrooke, and Mrs. John Sutton 1867.
12 1910s Downing 8.5 x 3.75 x 2 General cover wear, otherwise good condition. Inside page inscribed Mrs. J. D. Downing Meadville, Pa Dec. 1916.
13 1807 Fulton, Miller 8.25 x 5 x 1.5 Water and spot damage throughout and general cover wear. Otherwise good condition. Samuel Fulton signed on inside cover and back cover. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Miller noted on an inside page. Birth genealogy on page 46.
14 1864 Coleman, DeMatteo, Jackson 10 x 6.5 x 3.25 Front and back cover are detached. Binding is deteriorated and pages are loose. There is general page browning and spot damage. Signed Mr. W. A. Coleman Book. Donated by Joyce M. DeMatteo on Dec. 30th 1999.
15 Unknown Clark, Steel, Stiles 6.75 x 5.5 x 1.5 Missing several pages, about 20, from the beginning of the book. General wear, some rips on cover and some page spotting. Inside cover: Clarence W. Steel and Barbara B. Clark married at Altoona Dec. 31, 1902 by the Rev. H. H. Stiles. Kenneth Clark Steel born July 26, 1905 at 12:35 a.m. at Altoona. Baptized Oct. 22, 1905 by Rev. H. H. Stiles. Elizabeth Gilman Steel Born March 11, 1908 at 7:30 p.m. at Altoona, Pa. Baptized June 14, 1908. Similar text repeated on back cover page. Inside back cover: Clarence W. Steel #1014 Green Ave. Altoona Blair County Pennsylvania Feb. 23rd 1902.
16 1826 Marshall 7 x 4.5 x 1 Front and back cover have fallen off, spin covering is missing, front pages are loose, and general spot damage throughout. J. U. Marshall is signed on an inside page.
17 1890 Short 13 x 10.5 x 4.75 Some pages are falling out and all pages are browning. Bible presentation page inscribed to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Short by Mr. and Mrs. David A. Short Dec. 25th 1890.
18 early 1900s Pinkerton, Weirs 12 x 10 x 4 Front cover is missing, back cover is detached, binding is weak and broken in several places, and several pages are falling out. Inside page notes the marriage of Nellie Weir of Manor and Arion M. Pinkerton of Penn Station on Sept. 9th 1915.
19 1890 McFeatters 5.5 x 3.5 x .5 Some pages are spotted and browning, otherwise good condition John A. McFeatters Dec. 25 1889 is signed inside the front cover.
20 1865 None listed 5.5 x 3.5 x 1 Missing cover, binding loose, and pages are browning and spotted. None.
21 1876 Penrod 6.25 x 4.25 x 1.5 Back cover is detached, binding is broken, some pages are falling out, and cover has rips and tears. The name Arch Penrod is written on inside page.
22 183(?) None listed 6 x 4 x 1.5 Front and back cover are detached, beginning pages are loose, all pages have spotting, and general wear on edges of cover. None.
23 1809 Loughery (possibly) 11 x 9 x 4.5 Missing back cover, front cover is detached, general page spotting, and a few pages are falling out and damaged. Cover is inscribed with purchase date of May 27th 1810 for $7.70. The bible was later repurchased by Loughery for $9.25.
24 1824 Roberts, Shaffer 11 x 9 x 4 Some pages are loose, general page browning pages, general cover wear, and poor binding. Donated Feb. 2, 1951. Bible is written in Welsh. Presented to the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana, Pa by Flo Grumbling Shaffer on behalf of the Roberts Family.
25 Late 1800s Conner, Walker 10.75 x 7.25 x 2 Very bad condition. Front cover is detached and back cover is missing. Binding is loose and several pages are falling out and damaged. Note on front cover says family bible of Elizabeth Walker Conner 1838-1918 and Robert Conner 1834-1917, Montgomery Township. It says there are letters and entries in the bible, but none were found.
26 1859 Frye, Helman, Streams, Stewart 6 x 4 x 1 General wear and spots on first few pages. Otherwise good condition. Inside cover: Presented to James N. Stewart by his Mother Rebecca Stewart. Died the 1st A.D. 1873. Back cover: When miss you, see remember me - signed J. N. Stewart April the 13th 1873. Letter/note inside to Mrs. Helman from B. Frye discussing this book from Mrs. Streams.
27 Possibly 1860 McFeatters 5.5 x 3.75 x 1.5 General wear on cover, binding is weak in several places, and browning and spotting on pages. Inside cover: John A. McFeatters Book Jan. 5th 1860.
28 Unknown None listed 5.25 x 3.25 x 1.25 Binding is falling apart and has been taped. Pages are lose in several spots and the first few pages have been taped together. Back cover: Bought at Thos. Sutton Sale
29 1868 Kane, Petitte 5.5 x 4 x 1.25 Missing front and back cover and a few pages are torn. Otherwise good condition and good binding. Inside cover page has a hand written list of reading and psalms. Jas J. Kane stamped on inside page and the name James Petitte is written in.
30 1910 Blackburn, La Van 4.5 x 3.25 x .5 Very good condition. Inside cover: Presented to Roy E. La Van by Mrs. Andrew Blackburn S.S. Teacher Nazarene Church Salem, Ohio. Next page hand written: Roy E. La Van. Back page is stamped "Unbreakable Back" Pat. Mar. 8, 1910 D412.
31 1925 Borland 5 x 3.25 x .75 Very good condition. Inside cover name: Marion Borland.
32 1883 None listed 4.5 x 3.25 x .5 Corners peeling on cover, binding is a little loose, and pages are in good condition. None.
33 1828 None listed 4.5 x 2.75 x 1 Cover has spot damage and general wear. All pages are spotted and browning, otherwise good condition. Text is written in German.
34 1901 None listed 7 x 5 x 1.25 Overall water and mold damage especially on very edges of pages. Binding is weak. Hand written notes on a few pages near front and back covers of the bible. Notes have also been taken throughout the text.
35 1843 Steel 5.75 x 3 x .75 Missing back cover, front cover is detached, missing some pages, and binding is weak. The last name Steel is readable inside bible. General writing on first few pages.
36 Possibly 1899 None listed 5 x 2.5 x .5 Missing front and back cover. Otherwise good condition. None.
37 1883 Fetterhoff 5 x 3.25 x .75 Page edges and cover are worn and binding is deteriorated. Writing on back cover. Some pencil writing. Also inscribed is James W. Fetterhoff Book Jan. 1897 with a calligraphy pen.
38 1879 Miller, Nesbitt, Pollock 12.75 x 10 x 2.5 General cover wear and page browning. Otherwise good condition. S. Brady Miller inscribed on cover. He is the grandfather of Virginia Nesbitt. Genealogy in center of book noting births, deaths, and the marriage of Samuel B. Miller to Mifs Jane Pollock on July 7th 1859.
39 Unknown Adin, Bowman, Brink, Kerr, King, McAdoo 11.75 x 9 x 3 Front cover is falling off, binding is falling apart, and there is water damage to several pages. Name inscribed on cover - Wm. H. Kerr. Listing of births and deaths found in front of bible.
40 1869 Detwiler, Green, McAlden, Miller, Walker 12 x 9.25 x 3.5 Binding is deteriorated, pages are falling out, back and front covers are detached, and pages are browning and spotted. Several pages of genealogy in front of book. Three photos in back of book. Inside front cover written Sarah McAlden's Book Bought from Mr. Green Feb. 8th 1881.
41 1848 Byram, Cornwall, Flanagan, Gould, Hinsley or Finsley, Ingraham, Lutt, McCoy, McGarder, Orr, Secrest, Smith, Young 7.75 x 5 x 2 Binding is weak and broken in one place. General cover wear, otherwise okay condition. There is a lot of writing on inside and back pages. Back page includes some names, address, and dates, but most are difficult to read. Family record page is near the center of the bible.
42 1856 (vol. 2) Thomas 11.5 x 8.5 x 2.5 A few pages loose, most pages have spot/mold damage, binding is good, and cover has general wear. Cover is inscribed Thomas and Mary Thomas. Newspaper clipping of obituary for Thomas Russel Thomas found inside. Part of a two volume set.
43 1856 ? (vol. 1) Thomas 11.5 x 8.5 x 2.5 General wear on cover, spot/mold damage to inside pages, and missing a few introduction pages. Cover inscribed Thomas and Mary Thomas. Assuming same date of print, as other volume however that page is missing. Part of a two volume set.
44 Unknown Auxiliary of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (from the Carney Family) 11 x 8 x 2.5 Good condition except for binding. Presentation on inside cover to S.U.V. Auxiliary No. 177 from the Carney Family in Memory of their father Findley Carney.
45 1932 Freyer, Irwin, Maxwell, Munshower 11.75 x 9.75 x 2.75 General browning, front cover is a little loose, otherwise good condition. Mason's Bible. Center of book has a genealogy with births, deaths, and marriages. Also has death certificate of William M. Munshower and deed of gift.
46 Unknown Armstrong, Stephenson 11.5 x 9.5 x 2 Bad condition: missing front and back cover, missing first 116 pages, and overall spot damage. Bible from Estate of Charlotte E. Armstrong donated by Marcella Stephenson.
47 1874 Sutton 13.5 x 11 x 3.5 Front and back cover are detached, general cover wear, and some inside pages have spot damage. J.M. & M.M. Sutton is inscribed on the cover.
48 1880s or 1890s Gordon, Smail 12.5 x 10.5 x 5 Very good condition. Engraving of John Smail Gordon inserted in bible. Winfield Scott Gordon and Jennie Belle Smail were married June 18th 1896.

50 Unknown None listed 12 x 9.5 x 3.5 Cover is detached and pages are good but browning. None.
51 1873 Fisher, Sutton 12 x 9.5 x 3 Cover is detached and pages are loose and browning. Sutton-Fisher marriage certificate for 1825. Nine more marriage entries of the Sutton family from 1846 until 1872 are found in the bible. Additionally, there are 13 births (1801-1852) and 5 deaths (1849-1892) recorded.
55 1929 Levinson, Miller, Rankin (?) 7 x 4.5 x 1.5 Very good condition. Inside page says Francis Paul Miller, May 19, 1932, Rabbi Levinson. Additionally the word Rankin is written on this page. Bible is written in both English and Hebrew.
56 1848 Brashear 7 x 4.25 x 1.67 Pages are browning. Subtraction examples on front cover. Other writings inside front and back covers but not readable.
57 1871 McCollum 6 x 4 x 1.25 Good condition with some page browning. Name J. H. McCollum written inside front cover. Mrs. Hannah McCollum, Parkwood Ind. Co. PA written on inside page.
58 1871 Anderson 5 x 3.25 x .75 Good condition with some page browning. Inside page says Mr. James Bruce Anderson's Book.
52 1903 Chrisman, Fleming 13 x 9.5 x 3 Cover is detached and pages are good but browning. Fleming-Chrisman marriage, 1896.
53 Unknown Miller 12 x 9.5 x 2.5 Binding on cover has attempted to be repaired, otherwise good condition. Presented to Mrs. Herber Miller by Mr. Herber Miller. Also contains several inserted material like newspaper obituary clippings.

59 1871 Altimus, Grumbling, Wilson, Younkin 11 x 9 x 3.5 Missing outside biding cover. Some mold damage to front cover, otherwise good condition. Cover inscribed Mary C. and Margaret Altimus. The name Appleton A. Grumbling is signed on the inside cover. There are several photographs and misc. items inside and the will of Appleton A. Grumbling.

64 Unknown Clark, McMacke 5.5 x 3.75 x 1.67 Fairly good condition with some browning and loose pages. Written on inside page: Presented to Mary McMacke by Nov. 11th 1851. Additionally, another inside page has the name Mrs. Clark written.
65 1860 Lowman 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.5 Pages are browning and loose. Signed by Belle McKee Lowman (1939) and Hannah Lowman from Kent, Pa.
66 1842 Ruight 4.75 x 3 x 1.3 Spine is torn and pages are browning. Written in Greek. Belonged to Ruight as of June 1845. Written on back cover - $1.50 Aug. 8th, 1845 Indiana Co., Pa.
67 Unknown Gibson 4.3 x 2.5 x 1.75 30 + front pages are missing and several pages are folded over. Some pages are loose and browning and closure flap is missing. William Gibson owned this bible as of January 4, 1857.
68 Unknown Clawson 3.5 x 2.5 x .67 Front and back covers are missing as well as several back pages. Name Norman Clawson is signed on inside page. Additionally the name is signed in the back of the book with a note that says From Me December 26, 1909.
69 Unknown Clawson, Harris 3.75 x 2.75 x .5 Good condition. Gift of Nell Harris. Signed in back by Norman Clawson, Co.F,10th Pa. Infantry, Fort Bliss, ElPaso, Tx.

Note inside says: February 21st 1862 Presented to Catharine Whitacher (sp) as a reward for her good progress in spelling in class. No. 2 by G. G. W. Cowen Teacher. Stamp on opposing page "Catha. Whitacre." Photo of two unidentified women in back of bible.
71 Unknown Sifre 4.75 x 3 x 1 Front cover is loose, pages are browning, and spine is in poor condition. Inside page notes: Nov. 2nd 1873 Presented by the Sunday School at Christ's Church to Ed. P. Sifre.
72 1892 Walker, Wiggins 12 x 10 x 3 Tears on cover binding and lettering on cover is wearing off. Donated Aug. 1962. Presented to the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana, Pa via inscription on inside cover from Mrs. Annie M. Wiggins Walker.
73 1866 None listed 12 x 9.5 x 3 A little wearing on cover otherwise very good condition. None.
74 1900s Boggs, Holmes, Kius (?), Ralston 13 x 10 x 3 Back and front cover have been taped back on. Cover has some tears and missing patches, otherwise the book is in good condition. Genealogy located about 3/4 the way through the bible. Notes that Mr. Edward Ralston and Miss Ida Cora Holmes were married March 21st 1899.
75 Late 1800s Campbell, Coleman, Couch, Coulter, DeMalteo, George, Hanlett, Miller, Rearick, Reed, Taylor 12.25 x 10 x 4 Binding is in poor condition and spine is broken in several places. Pages are loose and there is wear on the cover. Inside page inscribed Mrs. Harriet P. Reed. Donated by Joyce DeMalteo 12/30/99. Genealogy located near center of bible. Noted that Alexander C. Reed and Harriet P. Coulter were married July 4th 1870. Misc. items include a cross-stitched piece and a page from United Presbyterian Newsletter.
76 1880s Byler, VanNatter (?) 12.5 x 10 x 3.5 Front cover is detached, binding is weak, and many pages have come loose and are damaged. Presentation page to Mrs. Alice Jo VanNatter (born Dec. 9th 1862) by Parker B. VanNatter (born June 8th 1862). Donated by M. B. Byler March 2001. Some genealogy of births and deaths are listed on back page.
77 1892 None listed 12.5 x 9.5 x 2.5 Front and back cover are detached. There was a previous attempt to tape cover back on. Covering for the spine has also fallen off. None.
78 1850 None listed 10.75 x 8.5 x 3.5 Spot damage throughout, binding is broken in one place, and a few pages are loose. Presented to the Lutheran Church of Brush(?) Valley Township by the Friends of Truby and Moorhead Philada: April 1831.
79 1834 Clawson 11 x 8.75 x 2.75 Front cover is detached. There is spot damage throughout and the leather on the back cover is highly deteriorated. The name John Clawson is signed on front and back pages with the date 1857 next to the first signature. On an inside page there is a note to Luainda(?) Clawson Dec. 27, 1875.
80 1868 Tomb 10.75 x 7.5 x 3.5 Front cover and first few pages are detached. There was a previous attempt to tape them back on. Binding is weak. Address label on the inside of the front and back cover: Mrs. Howard W. Tomb, 734 South Street, Indiana, PA.
81 1818 Beatty (?) 7 x 4.25 x 2 Some water and spot damage, overall page browning, and weak binding in several places. Some scribbled notes on inside page.
82 1831 Jefferson 7.25 x 4.75 x 1.5 Spot damage throughout and a few back pages are damaged. Inscribed inside front cover is the name Jefferson.
83 1812 Cribbs (?), Miller 6.75 x 4 x 2.25 Front cover is detached, back cover is missing, spine is broken in one place, and pages are in bad condition with water damage, spot damage, and browning throughout. Inside cover has some writing with possible name Sarah Cribbs. Another page is signed Abraham Miller his book.
84 1854 Miller (?) 6.25 x 4 x 1.25 Spot damage throughout. Inside back cover with possible name J. S. Miller. There is also some additional writing.
85 Unknown Davis 7.25 x 4.5 x 1.25 Spot damage throughout, some pages area loose, and several pages have damaged edges. Some writing on inside page but very difficult to read. Catherine Davis.
86 1824 McKnight 7 x 4.25 x 1 Spot damage and page browning. Binding is very weak, spine broken in several places, and there is general cover wear. Inside page inscribed James A. McKnight's book 18th Feb. 1842. Another inside page has letter written but is very difficult to read. Back page is signed James A. McKnight Born March 20th.
87 1869 Irvin, McEvoy, Nixon, Raudale, Williams 12 x 10 x 3.5 Cover is very worn and the front and back covers are detached. Readable names; David Mock Williams and Mrs. Mary Nixon McEvoy. Genealogy 2/3 of the way through. Photos of Walter E. Williams, Charlie Williams, Fauuie(?) (Williams) Irvin, Walter's mother Mary Nixon, Walter's father Phillip Williams, and other unidentified photos.
88 Late 1800s or early 1900s Miller, Park, Rubright, Walter   Front cover is falling off. There was a previous attempt to tape edges of the covers. Binding is weak. Genealogy about 2/3 of the way through the bible.
89 1870s (?) Mack 12 x 9.5 x 3.25 General cover wear and binding is loose. Name card found inside with the name James W. Mack printed on it.
90 1832 None listed 11 x 8.5 x 3 Missing front cover, all pages are badly browning and spotted, and some pages have water damage. Some writing on back pages but it is difficult to read because of water damage.
91 1814 Jacobs 11 x 9 x 4 A lot of mold damage and page browning. The first few pages are ripped, many pages are loose and crumbling, and the spine is very poor. Note on inside cover: Thomas Jacobs his book price $6.50 bought in the year 1815. Interesting card inside with small pox and scarlet fever remedy.
92 Unknown Adams, Empfield 11.5 x 9.75 x 2.5 Spine and binding is very weak, several pages are loose, and many pages near the back of the book are damaged. Note on inside cover is very faint and difficult to read but has readable date of 1844 and last name of Adams. Also there are some scribbles, but their meaning is unclear. The name Jennie Empfield was found signed on a piece of paper inserted in the bible.
93 1867 McFeatters 9 x 6 x 2.75 Missing front and back covers, missing a few pages in the end of the bible, several pages are detached, and the spine is broken in one place. Signed John A. McFeatters Book Sept. 17, 1867 price $1.85 on inside page.
94 early 1900s Louder, Nevitt 7 x 5 x 1.5 Missing front cover, back cover is damaged and detached, and several pages are loose. Inside page has presentation to Pearl S. Nevitt by (his sister) Ella Louder Date May 11, 1910.
95 Unknown Bell, Calhorn 5.75 x 3.5 x 1.5 Missing a few pages at the beginning. Binding is weak and broken in a few places, several pages loose, and front and back cover are loose. Inside cover signed Hazel Jan. 3, 1922. More writing on back inside of cover. Names Gladys Bell and Marquerite Calhorn Kittanning Summer Normal June 25, 1919. Several pages of versus inserted in back.
96 early 1900s Tuck 5.5 x 4 x 1 Front and back covers are a little loose, otherwise good condition. Front cover signed C. W. Tuck Christmas 1920.
97 1872 Anderson, Crick, Gibson, Terry 11.75 x 9.5 x 3.5 Front and back covers have fallen off, binding is weak, and some pages are falling out. In center of book there is a genealogy of births along with misc. items and a hand written letter from May 11th 1882.
98 1845 Clark, Simmons, Wilson 11.75 x 9.25 x 3 Spot damage throughout, few pages are loose and damaged, and the binding is weak in a few places. Inside page signed Property of Margaret L.
