| About Us: |
 |
Our chapter is located in Western Pennsylvania not far from the Pittsburgh International Airport. Our members are drawn from contiguous communities such as Evans City, Moon, Robinson, Kennedy, Mars, Mt. Lebanon, North Fayette, Findley, Hopewell, Hanover, Independence, Raccoon, Center, Economy, Aliquippa, Coraopolis, Sewickley, Baden, Clinton, Oakdale, and Carnegie.
Our members participate at the state and national levels. We have had many state chairman and state officers in our chapter. Several members participate on the national level, working on committees or paging (Juniors only). Our chapter has been recognized on the state and national levels with various awards.
MEETINGS AND GENEALOGICAL WORKSHOPS
The Jacob Ferree Chapter normally holds ten meetings each year. We meet for lunch on the first Saturday of the month (September through June) in Moon Township. There is a speaker scheduled for most meetings. We hold genealogical workshops four times a year to assist prospective members working on DAR applications. These meetings are open to the public. The chapter supports the library with monetary donations and gifts of genealogical reference books purchased annually in memory of our deceased members. We have 120 plus members (including Juniors) and twenty or more prospective members. Our meeting attendance is quite good. The chapter hosts several events and ceremonies in addition to our regular meetings.
PROJECTS AND EVENTS
Our annual benefit luncheon is held in the fall of each year to sustain DAR projects - local, state, and national. This event is a popular with our members, friends, and community. After lunch, entertainment is provided. Many of our Junior members have been taking an active part on the Benefit Committee. We are in the process of renovating a local cemetery. We have sponsored a classroom at the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama. Our chapter sends care packages to soldiers overseas through DAR Project Patriot. We have wrapped Christmas gifts to raise money for the DAR Schools. During Constitution Week, we have put up a display in a local high school. We support our local C.A.R. Society through the incorporation of their members into our programs.
AWARDS
At our annual February American History Tea, we honor the American History Essay winners from local schools. In the past years, several of these winners have won at the Pennsylvania state level. They were honored at the Pennsylvania luncheon held during the Continental Congress in Washington, D.C. The February tea also honors DAR Good Citizens from local high schools: Mt. Lebanon, Hopewell, South Side Beaver, Aliquippa, Ambridge, Moon, Sto-Rox, Montour, West Allegheny, Our Lady of Sacred Heart, Cornell, Sewickley Academy, and Quaker Valley. Each honored student is presented with a monetary award, while one student advances to the state competition. We also honor Junior American Citizens winners in grades K-12. Each year Jacob Ferree Chapter presents ROTC medals to students in the Ambridge and West Allegheny School Districts at their annual balls. We have also awarded Conservation medals to local citizens. We have recognized a local teacher for the Outstanding Teacher of American History contest and have honored local citizens with a Community Service Award.
MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO PATRIOT JACOB FERREE
On Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, Jacob Ferree members, along with members of Keith Holmes Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, pay a memorial tribute to Revolutionary War patriot Jacob Ferree at the Ferree Cemetery, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.
This year we dedicated a new marker to Jacob Ferree, our namesake who was a gunsmith during the Revolutionary War.
