Chapter History:

Welcome to the Jacob Ferree Chapter

Who was Jacob Ferree?

Patriot Jacob Ferree was born August 8, 1750. He is buried in a small cemetery in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, where a grave marker, placed by the Jacob Ferree Chapter, states his date of death as September 5, 1807.

According to the book, History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in Two Parts, first published by A. Warner & Company, Chicago, Illinois, in 1889, Jacob Ferree was a Huguenot, born in France. He immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and later settled at the mouth of Peters Creek, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In 1800 he purchased 330 acres in what is now Coraopolis, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Jacob was a gunsmith and manufactured gunpowder in the employ of the government during the American Revolution. Legend has it that Jacob was the first to manufacture gunpowder west of the Allegheny Mountains. Every Memorial Day, the chapter honors Jacob Ferree with a ceremony at his gravesite, where a wreath is placed.

We were organized in 1937. Some of the organizing members were direct descendants of Jacob Ferree. In March of 2007, we celebrated our 70th anniversary. Our chapter is stronger than ever, having over twenty prospective members.
