{Rumors in Lack township is that there was a fight about who was to cut some grass/hay on a

section of land between Pollock and Lathers farms. Since this happened in 1852 and I was

there in 1988 the story could of changed many times. Can't find any legal action taken by the

family again Lathers, so wonder about the story. BUT why else would one man kick another

unless they were in a fight.}

#92 James Pollock

James Pollock was born about 1762 in Ireland. He came to United States about 1788. I an

not sure if he was married at this time. The information is different in different places. I will just

put down what I have and I do know it will look strange. James married Jane, she was 50 to

60 years of age in 1830. James died 22 January 1848 at the age of 86 years. He made his

will in January 1843 listing his children and places where they lived if different than Juniata

county, Pennsylvania. For an occupation he was a Reverend for the Methodist Episcopal

Church. I have been unable to locate any records about this but did learn that lots of times in

the frontier towns anyone could become a Minister even if they were not ordained. They only

record I have of him being an actual Reverend is from his headstone in which he is called,

"Rev, James Pollock." James was naturalized 13 September 1803 in Lack township, Mifflin

county, Pennsylvania. Jane and James had six children:

1. Jane Pollock was born about 1795 in Ireland. She married a MILLER about 1812. She

died 28 January 1878 in Louisa county, Iowa and is buried at Rice cemetery, Louisa county,

Iowa. (First conflict ..if James came in 1788 he must of left his family in Ireland for a time or

else this above information is wrong.)

*2. Robert Pollock was born March 1796. He married Sarah and continued our line.

3. Nancy Pollock married William OWENS and died 1841 in Preble county, Ohio. She was

living in Ohio in 1843 when her father made out his will.

4. James Pollock married and had four children, two died before 1843

5. John Pollock was born about 1808 in Ireland and married Mary/Sarah OWEN. He died

12 July 1867 in LaGrange, Cass county, Michigan. In 1843 John was living in Michigan

according to the fathers will. John's wife, who is either Mary or Sarah Owen died before 1850.

They had four children:

	1. Bridget Pollock who was born in Pennsylvania and died 17 April 1889 in Cass

	county, Michigan.

	2. James Pollock was born in Ohio and married Amanda. James died 16 October

1898. They have two children in 1880:

		1. Treddy Pollock born 1869 in Michigan

		2. Bertha Pollock born 1873 in Michigan

	3. William Pollock was born in Ohio. He married 29 July 1853 to Harriet C.

SHANAHAN. Harriet was born about 1838 in Dela. The daughter of Clifford

Shanahan and Mary LOUREY. She died 18 June 1902. They have five children:

		1. William L. Pollock was born about 1855 and married Nancy A

PARKER 11 June 1879 in Cass county, Michigan. They have one son:

			1. Clyde P. Pollock born March 1880

		2. Wilbur F. Pollock was born about 1855. He married Julia A. HICE 18

		June 1880.

		3. Mary Pollock

		4. Harry Pollock

		5. Carrol Pollock

	4. John O. Pollock was born abut 1824 in Preble county, Ohio. He married Sarah

and died 23 February 1897 in Dowagiac township, Wisconsin at age 60. John and

	Sarah have five children:

		1. Carrie Pollock born 1861 in Michigan

		2. Elmer Pollock born 1863 in Michigan

		3. Arthur Pollock born 1864 in Michigan

		4. Martha Pollock born 1866 in Michigan

		5. Mary J. Pollock born 1868 in Michigan

History of Cass county, Michigan

by Matthews pg. 247

John and Mary Pollock came from Ireland, and settled in Pokagon township. He departed

this life in 1864 and she in 1848. John O. Pollock, one of their seven children, now lives on

section 7, and is the father of six children, all at home. The elder boys helping cultivate the

farm of 150 acres, which has been converted from a state of wilderness to one of fertility by

the industry of Mr.... Pollock.

Last will and Testament of James Pollock

selected parts

1st to wife Jane.. sheep, cows, and land

2nd to Methodist Episcopal Church .. meeting house and 1/2 acre of ground

3d to son Robert 80 acre..

4th to son John, now in Michigan $200.00

5th to children of my daughter, James, Jane and Sally Owens $50.00

6th to granddaughter Lydia $40.00

7th to children of James; Sarah, Robert $40.00

8th Lydia White $25.00

9th to Methodist Episcopal Church $300.00 to support missionary cause

Rumor: After the boys came back to take care of the father's affairs, they were told by the

church that they wanted to sell the meeting house, in part2 and build closer to town. The

family got upset so they took back the 1/2 acre and used it for the Pollock cemetery. The

church moved so after all the debts were paid the family took the $300.00 away from the

church also, since the church did sell the building and moved to town.

Fact: After the mother died her part of the land went up for sale since none of the children

had enough money to pay off her debts. I do think this is odd since $300.00 would of went

a long ways back then. Any ways the farm that she lived on was sold and part of it was

bought by the Lather family. There is only 4 years between the father and the son's death

so there might have been some hard feeling still about the farm being sold to Lather thus

explaining the previously mentioned fight.

Oddity: The death certificate for Robert Pollock leaves his mother's name blank. Since

the mother was still alive in 1848 it seems odd that no one knew her name. She would of

died between 1848 and 1852 so would of been known to all of Robert's family. Even if she

would of died between 1843 (when will was written) and 1848 (actual death date for Robert)

people would of knew her name. Oh well one more thing I will never be able to find out.
