Below are a few rules and some helpful information
After you send a subscription request
using the instructions
provided below, you will receive a message confirming that, "You have
been
added to the subscriber list of: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com". If you are
having
problems
skip to here.
- If you would like to post a
message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com
- There is no formal NOMAIL
mode. All you have to do is follow
the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to
stop,
and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.
- Your e-mail program must be
sent to send plain text messages, not
in HTML or RTF formatting.
- The bounce limit for this
list has been set at three (3)
bounces.
This means you will automatically be
removed from the
mailing list if there is an extended problem with your mail service.
You
will receive a notice informing you that you have been unsubscribed.
Please
ensure that your mail service is working properly before subscribing
again.
A Few Rules and Helpful Hints
- Please keep this information
or bookmark the page.
- Read this information. Yes,
it's a little long, but you don't
have to memorize it (that's why you're saving it).
- Off topic postings
(particularly political, advertising,
or just plain rude)
AND responses to these messages on the
list, are grounds
for being Unsubscribed. Please forward any offending email to the Mailing
List Admin
- DON'T send attachments
to the list. (Signatures are
okay.) The message will be returned to you. This isn't a problem for
the
mail server, but can cause some subscribers' machines to lock up, make
them lose all their mail, even crash their hard drive!
- If you have a large file,
try splitting it into smaller sections
and sending 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc. OR, send a message to the list
offering
to send the information privately.
- DON'T send messages
about a Virus - this isn't the
place.
- If you are switching
Internet Service Providers (ISP), or
changing your e-mail address, *PLEASE* unsubscribe from the old address
first and then re-subscribe at your new address.
- The most important key on
your keyboard is the DELETE key.
If you don't like a message, delete it. Don't send a cutting or snide
remark
back to the list. The rest of us don't want to read it, and it just
adds
to the clutter of useless messages.
- DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND
ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES)
ON THE LIST. IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST! (P.S. -
Don't
type in all caps, it looks like you are shouting.)
- If you feel someone is
causing a serious problem (use of
profanity, for instance), send me a message, not the list. But
remember,
I'm subscribed to this list, too.
- Please stay on topic and
close to the subject. (Keep in mind
that history is an important part of genealogy. Current topics usually
are not.)
- If you have a personal
message for someone, please send it
to their address, not the list server address. Any mail sent
to PALACKAW-L
will automatically be sent to everyone on the list.
To UNSUBSCRIBE and no longer receive the
INDIVIDUAL messages,
send a message (click on link to bring
up message form)
to:
that contains in the body of the message
the command
unsubscribe
and no other text. No
subject line is necessary,
but if your software requires one, just put a space or a period in the
subject, too.
To UNSUBSCRIBE and no longer receive the
DIGEST, send
a message (click on link to bring up message form) to:
that contains in the body of the message
the command
unsubscribe
and no other text. No
subject line is necessary,
but if your software requires one, just put a space or a period in the
subject, too.
Some common problems
You tried to unsubscribe and RootsWeb says
you're not a subscriber,
yet you're getting mail.
Send yourself a message and see how your
address appears
in the header of the message. **Usually** (if you're getting this
error)
they won't be the same. ISP (Internet service providers) are notorious
for changing your address, adding "mail" or "pop" or some other term to
it - or taking it away. If that is the case, all you can do is notify
me
to help you.
You get a "bad command" error.
Check your spelling. I see "unscribe",
"un-scibe" and
about every other variation imaginable. You have to spell stuff right!
Follow instructions - to the letter. If
you leave something
out of a command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.
Still having a problem, then contact the Mailing
List Admin, but be
specific. I can't help if you just say, "I'm having
a problem, help me." Tell me what it is. Tell me what you did or tried
to do. If you received some kind of error message, send it to me
(forward
the whole message).
