GE engineer designed missile guidance systems

NEW CASTLE  Private funeral will be Monday for James Crutchfield Marshall, Mill Road, Wilmington Township, formerly of Youngstown. He died at 9 p.m. Tuesday (8-5-97) in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle, after an extended illness. He was 69.

Mr. Marshall was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Gary, Ind., to Edward C. and Margaret Snow Marshall.

He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va., and earned a bachelor's degree in 1950 from Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland.

From 1950-52, he achieved the rank of master sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany.

Mr. Marshall was a defense electronics engineer for more than 20 years at General Electric Corp., Syracuse, N.Y., designing missile-guidance systems. He conducted research and design in its electronics laboratory, focusing on electro-optical tracking and communications.

He moved to New Wilmington, where he founded Optok Laboratories, which offered broadcast engineering and consulting services.

An amateur radio operator, he used the ham radio call sign ``W3HLF.''

Mr. Marshall was an avid gardener and birdwatcher who enjoyed working on various mechanical projects.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Margaret A. "Peg'' McLaughry, whom he married Oct. 27, 1962; a son, William S. "Newt,'' Erie; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Laury Anne) Parramore, Edgewater, Md.; and a sister, Jean Marshall, Santa Barbara, Calif.
