was born 30 Oct 1920 in West Pittsburgh Lawrence Co.,
PA.

Philippines, Plot A Row 2
During the Morotai Campaign in Sept.1944 he was promoted successively from Private first class to sergeant and staff sergeant. His Leyte performance won him another promotion to technical
sergeant. And then he was commissioned to second
lieutenant. He was a veteran of fighting at Saidor,
Aitape, Morotai and Leyte.
He earned the title of "The Human Mortar" because of his proficiency with
grenades. He threw with such accuracy and for such distances he became the official
grenade thrower for the company. Whenever any part of the unit ran into difficulty the commander
officer sent for Chambers and a case of grenades. He threw so many that he became quite literally a human artillery piece. A combat film that was shown in a theater in New Castle showed (Buck) Chambers hurling hand
grenades at Japs in the Philippines.
Before entering service Buck was well known in local amateur boxing circles in the New Castle area.
