Where is Montour County, anyway? Covering just 131 square miles, we are located in central Pennsylvania along the banks of the Susquehanna River approximately 70 miles North of Harrisburg. (Can you see the tiny dark area just East of Central PA on the map?) Lycoming County is to the North, Northumberland County is to the West and South, and Columbia County is on the East. The borough of Danville is the county seat. Click on the tabs for more information on county & township history or for an outline map of the townships. New!

The long-awaited reprint of the 1876 Atlas of Columbia & Montour Counties, PA by F. W. Beers & Co. is finally available at MCGS! This issue differs from the 2002 reprint, in that it has been reproduced in full color scanned from the original images. The size is 11 ¼ x 14” and it is bound in a hard cover with a gold embossed reproduction of the original title. A full index of all surnames is included. Now Available!

Montour County and the American Revolution by Randy Hackenburg is now available at the MCGS Genealogy Room or by mail. This fascinating and well-researched hard-cover book contains 107 pages including historical accounts of the participation of those citizens of what is now Montour County in the Revolutionary War, individual biographical sketches (you'll find many familiar names here) and company rosters, as well as beautiful photographs. If you have Montour County ancestors or if, like me, you just enjoy learning more about the hardy folks from this area who played a role in the fight for independence, you'll surely enjoy this book.

The author, Randy Hackenburg, is a Danville native who earned B. S. and M. A. degrees in American History from Bloomsburg State College and served in the U. S. Air Force before becoming the Photo Archivist at the U. S. Army Military History Institute at Carlisle, PA. He has done extensive research on Montour County's participation in the Civil War, War of 1812 and the Mexican War. He previously published Pennsylvania in the Mexican War: The Volunteer Regiments in 1992.
