. E. McMeen & Co. Department Store  111-117 E. Market St., Lewistown,
Pa. - 1941
Over the years, window shopping was a popular pastime in downtown
Lewistown.  Window displays provided a street-level method of commercial
advertising, too.  This display, featuring Mifflin County's oldest radio
station, WMRF, appeared in one of the Market Street windows of the
McMeen store in 1941.  Generations of local shoppers ventured to the
establishment at Christmas-time so their children could sit on the knee
of McMeenís Santa Claus.  The department store was eventually acquired
by a York firm in 1957.  WMRF sent out its first broadcast June 1, 1941,
just a few months prior to this display,  and was found at 1490 on the
dial.  That initial broadcast day lasted from 10:30 a.m. to sign-off at
2:15 p.m.
