| American Viscose Corporation at shift change - 1940s It was a common sight, depicted in this World War II-era photo, of Lewistown Transportation Company busses at-the-ready, bound for Mifflin County's many outlying communities. They lined up in the company parking lot, just across Lewistownís Memorial Bridge. Each bus carried a placard noting its destination, like the Milroy bus in the foreground. Reedsville, Yeagertown, Maitland, Vira and Burnham were some of the other destinations of this county-wide system. The Viscose began operation in 1920, survived and prospered after the 1936 St. Patrickís Day flood only to close permanently after the 1972 flood brought on by Hurricane Agnes. Today, the buildings of the once flourishing rayon business houses the Mifflin County Industrial Development Corporation. |
