Camping on the Juniata River - circa 1892
Dr. Walker was a local Mifflin County dentist who knew how to camp in
style.  He is  shown at left  posing with the oar,  his family, friends
and in-laws seated nearby.  The Walker clan was camping along the
Juniata River below Lewistown that summer in the early 1890s and they
brought all the conveniences of home - rocking chairs, carpets, Japanese
lanterns, china and tableware.   In 1888, Henry K. Landis of Lancaster
County, canoed down the Juniata in a craft like the one pictured above.
Landis and his companions camped at McVeytown and in the Lewistown
Narrows.  In 1993, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
published the diary he kept during the adventure, along with photographs
Landis made along the way.
