1 Monument Square, Downtown Lewistown
Mifflin County Historical Society Renovation Project of the first
and second floors (front,) under lease with Mifflin County
Commissioners, was completed June 3, 1983.
The Mifflin Co. Historical Society's Research Library is now housed
in the former vault and office used by the Register and Recorder.
The office became the reading room, with microfilm reader and card
catalog for use of visitors.
Entered through the old vault door (which was retained for
historical interest), the stack room contains hundreds of local
publications, standard historical references, microfilmed local
newspapers 1822-present (not complete); genealogical records and
help by volunteers for those working on family history. A narrated
slide presentation, "The Story of a County in the Mid-Juniata
Valley of Penn s Sylvania", is available upon request without
charge for program use by community groups.
The first floor hall and lobby is the display area for large art
works of local significance. Four large murals depicting the history
of Bumham are on display. They were painted in 1952 by Dr. Yar G.
Chomicky for the auditorium of the Bumham School. They were the gift
of the Mifflin County School District in 1989.
There is also a large painting in an ornate gold frame of the
William Mann Axe Factory. Established circa 1835, it is shown in a
scenic view of the Reedsville or Mann's Narrows (formerly Logan's
Gap.) This painting dated 1905, was signed by C.A. Eshelman. It was
presented by the Brooklyn Fire Company.
The second floor Court Room has been refurbished by the County
Commissioners with the original court room furniture.
