(Q197) 17 Aug 1997 - Dan Carroll
Surnames: CARROLL,
RODGERS
I am seeking info. on the ancestors of John CARROLL b.
1837 in England and d. Mar 1, 1907 in Allegheny Co., PA. His wife's
name was Mary RODGERS who was b. Jun 29, 1847 in
Pottsville, PA and d. June 8, 1935. The earliest record of John
CARROLL was in the 1870 census in Mercer Co., PA. He
then shows up in the 1900 Allegheny Co. census. John
CARROLL and Mary RODGERS had seven
children: John, Phebe, Thomas Earl, Martin, Samuel, Briggy, and
Mahala. I am a descendant of Thomas Earl
CARROLL. I am interested in any info.
(Q196) 16 Aug 1997 - Howard Adams
Surnames: ADAMS, DORSCH, HURLEY,
WALSH-WELCH
I hope someone might help me. I've found all of my ancestors back
several generations, most all of whom trace to Ireland save one and he to
Scotland. The missing link is the birthplace of my grandmother
Elizabeth WALSH (born Elizabeth WELCH)
and/or her father. This is what's known of her. She was b. Sep
3, 1876 (this date and her name WALSH certified by the PA
Orphan's division, Allegheny Co.). She had several brothers, James
WELCH and John WELCH plus a sister Harriet
and a sister Ethel. She m. Jan 19, 1898 at Old St. Andrews Church (no
birth or baptismal records with that record or throughout the parishes) to
John ADAMS. She lived with a family named
HURLEY at 1 Overlook St. Northside Pittsburgh till her
marriage to John ADAMS thence at 15 Montana St. Northside
Pittsburgh. She d. Jan 1927 at 47 years and is buried in Calvery
Cemetery, Hazelwood, Pittsburgh (from cemetery records). Relations
include: a sister Harriet who m. George DORSCH and lived in Mt.
Washington, Pittsburgh; a brother John WELSH (from a
letter, partially destroyed, mailed from Paddington, England in which he
laments the great tragedy which befell the family); and finally, another
brother whose military records reflect his name as James
WELCH, mustered into the Army May 10, 1898 at 23 years old
(b. 1875). Records show James traveled from Sharon, PA to Mt.Gretna,
PA to join and that he was b. in Neshannock, PA. Military records show
his guardian (probably Elizabeth's and James' uncle) to be B.D.
WELCH of Hermitage, PA. B.D. WELCH
was no doubt their father's brother.
We feel quite sure that Elizabeth's father either never came to the U.S.
from Ireland or did, married again and never reunited with the kids.
B.D. WELCH brought the kids (Elizabeth and James) to
America when they were small. At least Elizabeth was raised by the
HURLEYs. She was estranged from her family because
her father was wanted by the British authorities for murder, but we're told
he was active I.R.A. member (although he could have just been a
scoundrel). The family believes she and her sister were placed with
her father's father in England and that her uncle (possibly B.D.
WELCH) whisked her away one night to America. I've
searched for her birth or baptism records throughout the Pittsburgh, PA area
and parishes to find records indicating her birthplace or the names of her
father and mother. No birth records can be found in America. Nor
do her Baptism or Confirmation records exist although she was a devout
Catholic. She was an admirer of Holy Ghost College, later Duquesne
University, established by the Holy Ghost Fathers from Dublin. She was
buried by an Irish funeral home. Furthermore she hounded her husband
John Prespeteiryn from Scotland till he converted to Catholic.
His family then scratched him from their family Bible, but that
must wait for John R ADAMS story. The B.D.
WELCH trail may be the best trail to follow, possibly the
only one. Any info. on B.D. WELCH of Nashannock,
Mercer Co., PA will be appreciated.
(Q195) 15 Aug 1997 - John H. MacDonald

McDONALD-MACDONALD
Researching Mc/MACDONALD, ECHOLS
(ECKLES), and CLINGINSMITH
(KLINGINSCHMIDT). Would like any info. regarding
Charles (?) McDONALD (MACDONALD) and Marie
DE MERCHANTE (?), likely in Mercer Co. mid 1800s.
Their dau. (name unknown) m. an ECHOLS
(ECKLES) and had a son named Munroe. Their son,
Lemuel (1831-1889) m. Cordelia CLINGINSMITH (1833?-1910,
dau. of Ester CLINGINSMITH of Salem Twp., Mercer
Co.). Their other son, William (1836/1837-?) m. Cordelia's sister,
Elizabeth CLINGINSMITH (1838-?). Lemuel supposedly b.
in Stoneboro. Shows up in 1860 census in Beaver Co. PA, then in 1870

be allowed to view the artifacts but HINDE refused.
My father was the only living BARR direct descendent of John
