How
do I get an obituary for one of my ancestors?
First, check the obituary section of the Mercer County site. If your
ancestor is listed there, click on the name to go to the obituary and your
search is over. Go to the
obituaries section. If your ancestor is not listed there,
read on.
When.
First, when did they die? You'll need a date of death to find an
obituary.
If
your relative died between May 23, 2000 and the present, their
obituary may be on line at the website for The
Herald, Sharon, PA newspaper. These are filed by the date the
obituary appeared in the newspaper, so check the death date and the next
couple days. Click
here to go to the 2000-2001 archives.
If
your relative or ancestor died between 1876 and 1929 or between
1952 and the present, the Mercer County Genealogical Society may be
able to locate an obituary for you for a nominal fee. Click
here for more information. Click
here for the archive index for 1996-98.
If
your relative or ancestor died between 1930 and 1951, be
patient. The Mercer County Genealogical Society is at work
abstracting those obituaries from the local newspapers.
