How
do I get a will for one of my ancestors?
Research. First, it's a good idea to get "identification
number" of the will, so it will be easy to locate at the courthouse.
Consult
the Mercer County Will Book Index written by Dr. James K. Sewell
for wills between 1804 - 1900. Click
here for more information on the book or to see if there's a lookup
volunteer available on this book. (If your ancestor died after 1900,
or if you are unable to get access to this book, just ask for the will by
your ancestor's name.)
Write.
Then write the
Register of Wills
Mercer County Government
138 S. Diamond St.
Mercer, PA 16137-1284
or phone (724) 662-3800 for information.
State in your letter that you would like to purchase the
will (either by the number or by your ancestor's name). Be specific
on which ancestors you would like a will for - don't write and say that
you like a will for every person with the a certain surname.
You will receive a letter back stating how much the
document will cost, depending on the number of pages in the will.
Then, return a copy of the letter and a check to the register of wills.
Visit. Also, you can do this research in person. Just
visit the Register of Wills Office at the Mercer County Courthouse,
138 S. Diamond St., Mercer. How
to get there. Open 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wills on are on
microfiche, cataloged by the identification number mentioned above.
You can get this identification number at the courthouse. More
information on the courthouse.
