Surname Index to the 1870 Census

Every individual, listed alphabetically by surname, first name, and numerically by age, found within the 1870 Federal census of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

With few exceptions, both microfilm rolls are easy to read. The original pages are well focused with good exposure. There is usually good contrast between the background paper and the dark letterforms. Rarely are the names difficult to read because of fading ink.

Nonetheless, ALL the usual precautions about searching for surnames apply. The taking of the census involved many individuals, each of whom interpreted the names as they heard or read them. The spelling of surnames in the census books may not correspond to their modern spellings, either through the result of the natural evolution of the spellings over time or through errors on the part of the enumerators and/or transcribers.

For example, the following names have been found in the Mercer census records as they were written in the census, and their modern equivalents:

Callahan = written as Colahan

Kirby = written as Hurly, Carby

Kennedy = written as Canaday, Canedy

MacDonald = written as MDonel

OÕNeil = written as Onail

Perry = written as Bearee

HINTS FOR SEARCHING:

1) Search for phonetically similar consonants:

for example: C and K, P and B, W and R, etc.

2) Search under every vowel:

for example: Eckles = Accles; Kirby = Kerbie, Karby, Kurbee

3) If double consonants occur in the surname, always check under single consonants. Also consider the doubling of single consonants:

for example: Collins = Colins, Wilson=Willson, Allen = Alenn

4) Always search under letters which appear similar when handwritten. In several of the townships, the letters ÒSÓ, ÒLÓ, and ÒTÓ, when occurring as a capital letters in the surname, can be difficult to differentiate - all 3 look nearly identical. If the surnames you're researching begins with ÒSÓ, ÒLÓ, and/or ÒTÓ, search the index under all three letters.

for example: Sailor = Tailor [Taylor]

5) Surnames in which the first letter(s) were illegible are grouped together under a separate index: (e.g.: *liff, **mp*hrey, etc).
