I’m posing a question to all researchers of the Andress family of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey. After careful examination of all the information that I have access to I recognize that there are discrepancies in what is known about this Andress family. Perhaps by realizing this we can find the roots of our Andress tree . Here is my explanation of what I think is going on, and I emphasize think, because I don't have enough sources to claim anything. Please give this some thought, and I encourage you to pass this on to every one that you know who has researched our Andress family. I’ll start with what I have on my great-great-grandfather Hampton Andress. A couple of years ago I sat down with my grandfather just to see what he could remember. All he really had was the name Hampton. He knew more about Hampton's wife Eliza, because he knew her. She lived for about 103 years, passing away in 1956. My grandfather couldn't remember much, but he remembered that years ago his brother sent to him some short biographies taken from "J.H.Beer's Commemorative & Biographical records. . ." One of them was on William Snyder of Stroud Twp, Monroe, PA. William's daughter Eliza is mentioned briefly: "Eliza, born September 2, 1853 at the homestead married Hampton Andress of Stroudsburg. . ." That's all I had for a while. Because of certain circumstances I have had to do most of my research over the internet and I couldn't find anything on him. From online census images I found Hampton and Eliza for 1880 & 1900. In 1800 Hampton is age 40, with wife and two children. Here is the first time I found out he was from New Jersey. All of his children for the years 1880 - 1930 claim he was from NJ. In 1900 Hampton is age 67, with wife and four children. Hampton claims he was born in June of 1833. From 1900 I also gather that they were married for 25 years, which would have placed their marriage near 1875. On the 1910 census Eliza is with three children and is listed as a widow. From Howard Morgan funeral records I gather that Hampton W. Andress died January 4, 1908, at age 74 years, 6 months, 18 days, and is buried at Stroudsburg Cemetery. The children of Hampton and Eliza are Emma, b.1876; Clara, b.1878; William, b.15 Oct 1883; John, b. 1855; Clarence, b.26 June 1887; Roy, b.12 Oct 1890; and Edward b.? (Edward may be their grandson) Please contact me if you’re interested in descendants information. So, Hampton of my family was born about 1833 in New Jersey. He was married to Eliza Snyder about 1875 in Stroudsburg ( also, I should note that Hampton is mentioned as "Of Stroudsburg", so he may have been there a while, at least since 1860.) And he died in 1908 in Stroudsburg. While searching for my Andress roots in NJ I continually ran across the family of Hampton Andress, born in 1807. This information came from a couple of online sources on the Hunt family. From those sources I conclude that Hampton was born Sept 26, 1807, that he was married to Martha Elizabeth Hunt Dec 13, 1834 and that he died Sept 26, 1875 and is buried in Newton Cemetery. My source for his parents is from " New Jersey Family Histories 1600 - 1800's." Page 388 lists:"Margaret Hunt, b.1795; m. Joseph Andress" and it lists their children as Sarah, Marshall, Harriet and Hampton, and it points out that Hampton married Martha E. Hunt. On page 392 it lists Hampton and Martha's family. It lists their family’s birth dates, marriage dates, and death dates, and whom they married. This is the only “official” source that lists his parents. Although a couple secondary sources claim Joseph and Margaret as his parents, I don’t know where they get their information from. Maybe researcher! s are using the above source without questioning it. Or there may be a source I’ve yet to run across . From gathered sources the children of Hampton and Martha are Arminta, born 1834; Oscar, 1837; Theophilius, 1841; and Olla Maria, 1847. Recently I found census records for Joseph Andress of Hardwick Twp, Warren County: In 1860 Joseph is age 55, with son Hampton age 25, and Elizabeth Ball age 30. In 1850 Joseph Andress is written "Andruss." Joseph here is age 47, with wife Margaret age 55, Sarah age 25, Hampton age 20, and Harriet age 18. (In 1860 Marshall Andress lives close by with wife and two children). In 1840 Joseph Anders, who I believe is the same, has 2 males age 5-10, 2 males age 10-15, 1 male (Joseph) age 30-40; 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female (Margaret) age 40-50. In 1830 Joseph Anders is age 20-30, he has two males under 5, one male 10-15, one female under 5, and his wife 20-30. In 1870 Joseph Andress is age 60. He has a 13 year old living with him by the name of Albert Andress; a farmhand, Ira Stewart, age 25; and Elizabeth Ball, age 40, who is listed as the house keeper. What is interesting here is that Joseph would have been born about 1804, and Margaret 1795. Plus the children listed, and their ages, lead me to believe that their son Hampton is my great-great-grandfather born about 1833. But I need to point out that Hampton’s age from records places him being born anytime between 1830 - 1840, but more records point to 1833. Both Joseph and Margaret would have to be children themselves when Hampton of 1807 was born. And let me point out that I also have the census records of Hampton, born 1807, for these same years, so we know that there are two Hamptons in the area at this time. I think it is more likely that Joseph and Hampton, and two other Andresses by the names of Peter and Elizabeth were siblings. It looks like researchers have confused the two Hamptons, possibly because mine moved to Stroudsburg some time between 1860 and 1875. I haven’t been able to locate him in 1870. My source here is from the internet, and therefore secondary. I have not been to the cemetery or obtained official records. In the Marksboro Presbyterian Churchyard of Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, rest Joseph Andress who died June 4, 1874, in 73 year (placing his birth near 1801), and his wife Margaret H. who died April 12, 1854, in 59 year (born 1795). In the same yard are Peter W. Andress, born June 7, 1801 and died April 8, 1861, and his wife Sarah E. Skinner, born July 29, 1804 and died Sept. 9, 1881. Close by are Amos Skinner (1799-1880) and his wife Elizabeth Andress, who was born Oct. 19, 1798 and died Dec. 1, 1884, and a son Joseph C. and daughter Margaret. The only other record I’ve been able to find of Amos and Elizabeth is the 1850 census of Frelinghuysen Township. Here Amos Skinner is age 50 and a carpenter; Elizabeth age 49, son Andrew J. age 25, Margaret A. 22, and Catherine 13. Living with them is a carpenter Wesley P. Major age 17. I haven’t been able to find much on Sarah Skinner who is the wife of Peter, but Sarah and Amos are probably related if not brother and sister. This may lend credence to Peter and Elizabeth being siblings. On the 1830 census Peter is two lines above Joseph with Wilson Hunt, brother to Margaret in between. From different online sources I found some of the children of Peter and Sarah: Roderick, born 1825; Margaret,1833; William,1837; Elsey, 1842; Jacob, 1845. I have found information on some of their descendants, but will only mention here that Roderick married Hulda J. Lanning, daughter of Isaac Lanning, and that Harriet Andress, the daughter of Joseph, married Isaiah Lanning, Hulda’s brother. NJ Vital Records, Warren County, Marriages and Deaths, 1848-1867 lists Harriet D. Andrews as the daughter of Joseph Andrews of Blairstown; and that on May 25, 1854 she married Isaiah Lanning. So far this is the only source I’ve located listing our name as Andrews. But the Index of Wills and Inventories, Vol. 3, Warren County lists a Joseph Andrews whose inventory is in 1874. I’ve yet to obtain this record to see if it is our Joseph. Two other Andresses buried in Marksboro Cemetery that may be sons of Joseph and Margaret, I’ll list here that perhaps someone may recognize them. Joseph Andress jr was born Jan. 19, 1829 and died July 22, 1887. This source mentions that Joseph jr has a Grand Army of the Republic marker. A

Am attempting to find info on ancestor Sylvannus Strang and whether he had two wives or only one. Specifically, trying to track down documentation re whether Sylvannus Strang was married to Marie (Maria?) Lawrence Strang and when (possibly around the turn of 1800's in Monroe County/Hamilton Township PA?). Lots of anecdotal info on (supposed) second wife, Catherine Gearhart. Documentation on the marriage between Sylvannus and Catherine would also be great. Am particularly trying to determine (with documentation) if Sylvannus and Marie had son Johannes (John) born early 1800's (possibly 1812/1813). This search has gone on for two years, so any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am trying to find out information about my gg grandparents, Joseph Addison BROWN and Rachel SHAW. Joseph BROWN was born in Stroudsburg 2 June 1817 and Rachel SHAW's birth is given as 1819 Monroe County. They were married in Monroe County on the 16 of May 1839. They moved to Iowa in 1849 and remained there until their deaths. I would like to find out who their families were in Monroe County and where they came from. I do have documented accounts of their life in Iowa, but nothing pertaining to Monroe County.
