Denis O'Mahony

 

FATHER DENIS O'MAHONY, pastor in charge of All Saints' Catholic church in Jefferson township, Mercer county, is a native of Skibbereen, Ireland, where he was born, July 1, 1870. His parents were Michael and Mary (Haggerty) O'Mahony, the former now deceased, and the latter living in the Emerald Isle. They are the parents of ten children, seven of whom are living, as follows: Margaret, who married Patrick Murphy, a school teacher in Scotland: Denis, of this sketch; Nellie, who is connected with the Retreat of the Sacred Heart, one of the Catholic orders in England; Mar, a member of the Order of the Blessed Virgin, in France; Michael Joseph, who is a farmer in Jefferson township and who married Nellie Jennings, a daughter of John S. Jennings, a well known farmer of Jefferson township: Julia. who is a governess and resides in Barcelona, Spain; Jerome, who lives in Ireland with his mother.
Father O'Mahony received his education at Sacred Heart College, Glastonburv, England, and at various other institutions of his faith, located at Issoudun, France, and Antwerp, Belgium. His college and theological courses covered a period from 1882 to 1895, and in the latter year he was ordained a priest and stationed at Issoudun, France, where he was connected with the teaching staff of Sacred Heart College and during this period (two years) also pursued post-graduate work in theology. In 1898 he was called to the American field by Bishop Mullen of Erie, Pennsylvania, being assigned to his present charge in Jefferson township.
