Rev. Reed Spurgeon Shirey, b. 11 July
1892, at the home of his maternal grandparents, in Lower Mudlic, PA.
He died 17 July 1981 in Edward Hosp., Naperville, IL. He
married Verna Mae (Custer), b. 23 Dec. 1893, in Johnstown, PA.
She died, 14 Jan. 1983, in Naperville, IL. Reed was the son
of Charles Monroe Shiry / Shirey & Salina "Esther"
(Mohney) Shirey.

Rev. Reed S. Shirey
“NAPERVILLE,
IL - The Rev. Reed Spurgeon Shirey, 89, of 1326 N. Eagle St.,
Naperville, a former Mayport, PA, resident, died July 17, 1981, at
Edward Hospital following a short illness.
“A son of the late Charles M. & Salina
“Esther” (Mohney) Shirey, he was born July 11, 1892, in Lower Mudlic,
PA.
“At the time of his death, Rev. Shirey was
serving as Pastor of Visitation for Community United Methodist Church of
Naperville, where he also taught a fellowship Sunday School class, and
served as chaplain of the Naperville Noon Lions Club.
He was also affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and the Naperville
Senior Agers.
“A graduate of Albright College, Reading,
PA, and Western Theological Seminary of Pittsburgh, PA, Rev. Shirey
served as a pastor in Pennsylvania for 42 years before moving to
Naperville in 1963.
“He and his wife celebrated their 62nd
wedding anniversary on July 10.
“Surviving in addition to his wife, is a
son: Olin; three brothers: Samuel
Shirey, R # 2, Mayport, and Russell Shirey, R # 1, Mayport, PA, and
Charles V. Shirey of Palmyra, PA; two sisters:
Mrs. James “Effie” Shaffer, RR, Brookville, PA, and Mrs.
Russell “Mildred” Raybeck, of Naples, FL; six grandchildren, and
eight great-grandchildren.
“He was preceded in death by a brother and
two sisters, as well as his parents.
“Funeral services were held at Community
United Methodist Church with Rev. David Hett, Rev. Grant Graver, and Dr.
Raymond Veh, officiating.
“Interment followed in Naperville Cemetery.
“A Masonic service was held at Ackman-Nelson
Funeral Chapel.”
Verna Mae
Custer Shirey, his wife, b. 23 Dec 1893, Johnstown, PA., died
14 Jan 1983, Naperville, IL. She
was the daughter of John Berkebile and Ida Jessie Miller Custer.
