Pine Grove is a small, rural community nestled among the Appalachian
ridges of Eastern Pennsylvania. Chances are you have never heard
of it and you will not find its history written in any book
you've ever read. Yet, the stories of the men and women who
lived there - their dreams, their struggles, their achievements
- are part of the common heritage of the American experience.
The images contained on this site offer us a glimpse into the
history of this close-knit community of farmers, miners, and
tradesmen as it existed in the early decades of this century.
The photographs were taken by Alvin Schwalm from 1908 to 1937.
They are available here courtesy of his son, Robert Schwalm
of Pine Grove.

A local historian, writing in 1935, gives this description of
the town: "Its power found its origin at its firesides, where
rich traditions gave the community a life by itself, and provided
the inspiration for right living and a rare sense of duty to God
and country. This individuality has remained as constant as the
rolling hills, which give it scenic beauty and dignity. Thus removed
from the distracting glare of popular feats and popular men, Pine
Grove stands out as a specimen of pure Pennsylvania German life
and culture and unadulterated Americanism."*
