Levi Cook
Levi Cook, youngest son of Susanna (Ross) and James Cook,
was born 22 Apr. 1844.
He enlisted 04 Jun. 1863 in Co E, 21st Regt.,
PA Vol. and served until 20 Feb. 1864. He reenrolled 26 Aug. 1864 in Co
K 5th Regt PA HA and was honorably discharged at Vienna, VA on 30 Jun. 1865.
According to an affidavit in Levi's Civil War Pension file, his regiment
was on a march and fighting between Rectortown and Salem in the mountains
of VA during the first week in Oct. 1864. Although it rained and was cold
during the march, the regiment slept on the ground with only wet blankets
to cover them, and were not permitted to build fires for cooking or warmth
because the "Rebs" were so nearby. Some men reportedly threw away their blankets
when they became too saturated and too heavy to carry.
Levi was married to Mary Kelly Lowry on 26 Apr 1868 in Shanksville, Stonycreek
Twp, PA by C A Brant, Esq. They had eight children. Levi died 16 Oct. 1917
and he and Mary are buried at Shade Church Cemetery.
