AYCRIGG, COL. BEN was a Civil Engineer. He was Chief Engineer when the Union Canal was made from Pine Grove to the Water Works connecting with the canal from Middletown to Reading. He was a bachelor and had bought some land at Mifflin, now called Suedberg, which was to be the head of the canal, the plan being to make the railroad to the mines from Suedberg up to the High Bridge through De Hass Swamp to Lorberry and Suedberg would thus be the shipping point. He bought the land where the Suedberg station and hotel now stand and the farm that Wagner owns now. With the intention of making money in selling lots he held this a good many years afterwards but sold it at a loss. The last time I saw the Col. was when the Pine Grove Company left for Harrisburg under the call for 75,000 men. He was visiting here at the time and went along to Harrisburg.

ACHENBACH, REUBEN was a blacksmith and carried on the business by the old canal basin; he had four sons and one daughter: Daniel, Reuben, Isaac, Gregory, and Mrs. F. F. Broom mer.

In the year 1900, he entered the employ of John F. Werntz in the Pine Grove Bank, with which he has been since connected. Upon Mr. Werntz's death in 1909, Mr. Angst became cashier and the entire responsibility of conducting the bank fell into his hands. The bank is in sound condition with a paid-up capital of $95,000 and deposits of twice that amount, the resources of the institution amount to about $225,000. Mr. Angst had careful training under Mr. Werntz and his ability has developed with the increase of his responsibilities. Under his management the affairs of the bank have been regulated intelligently and competently and its prestige increased. Mr. Angst has served as School Director and Justice of the Peace in Pine Grove Township and in Nov., 1915, was elected a member of the Borough School Board with a flattering vote. He is connected with the Masonic Fraternity, Royal Arcanum, Odd Fellows, and Red Men. He has an interesting family. His oldest child and only son, Roy, is a student at the Naval Academy, Annapolis.
