Biographical Notes of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania

NUTTING, J. L., was born in the State of Maine, came to Pine Grove in about 1847, taught school for five or six years, went to New Berlin and taught in Academy for one year, and came back to Pine Grove. He was married in 1851 to Anna Graeff, and had one son and two daughters, a son and a daugh- ter died when Quite young. Annie is living. in 1857 he en- tered in partnership with J. F. Derby in the Foundry and Ma- chine shop, was in partnership only for a 'short time. Then he bought out Derby's interest, and carried on the business alone. In 1864 he sold out to James Rohrer, went in the coal business with William Lewis at what is called West End, the firm being Nutting & Lewis. They sold out to the P. & R. railway com- pany in 1872. Nutting then entered the coal firm, Borda, Keller & Nutting, selling coal in New York. When he retired from the coal business he bought the Brookside farm, one-half mile from town and gave his attention to farming till he died. in 1876 he was a candidate for Congress. He was cheated out of his seat till Congress adjourned then he was allowed his pay. He was a school director for many years. He was always ready to help any enterprise along that was for the benefit of the town. Annie was married to Mr. Wigton and lives in the old homestead that belonged to her grandfather Graeff. She has two sons and three daughters. Richard is a traveling salesman; Nutting 'or Ted, as he is called, is a Lawyer and lives out West; Jeanette is married to Dr. Ralph Miller; Elizabeth is married too. Cather- ine is single and lives at home.
NUTTING, LYMAN, a brother of J. L. Nutting, came to Pine Grove in 1859, went in the coal business with J. E. Graeff, at Rausch Creek, the firm being Graeff & Nutting. in 1863 the firm was consolidated with Kitzmiller, Stees and Co., and wan called Kitzmiller, Graeff & Co. He was married to Louisa Hal- ter, owned the house where J. Wilson Barto lives. He also owned the farm that George and Harry Gensemer now own. He was also connected in the furnace with John Miller, in Mid- dietown and at Lebanon. He lived in Lebanon where he died.
