MONTHLY ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER DEBUTES! Thanks to Barb Lavin, the Historical Society of Schuylkill County begins an electronic newsletter to keep members, supporters and the general public informed of the Society and its activities. The newsletter is intended to be published on a monthly basis after the monthly Board of Directors meeting. The meeting is generally held on the first or second Saturday of each month. Since this is the "Premiere" edition (or in actuality, the "Guinea Pig" edition) it will be modest in content. Hopefully it will increase in quantity and in quality over the coming months. COMING EVENTS The annual HSSC dinner will be held at the Quality Hotel on April 17th. The exact time and the cost will be announced in March. The theme will be "The Pennsylvania Dutch in Schuylkill County." The speaker will be Dave Valuska with a Pennsylvania Dutch meal contemplated. On Saturday, June 19th, the HSSC will sponsor a "Molly Maguire Road Ramble" which should be lots of fun for the participants taking them to various sites between Pottsville and Jim Thorpe. Mike McGough will be the organizer of this event and further details will be announced in March. On February 23rd at the monthly meeting to be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Second and Howard Avenue, Pottsville, Mark Major will discuss "Schuylkill County Maps" reviewing the HSSC collection of maps. The meeting is open to the general public. Remember to bring a friend. The time of the meeting is 7:30 pm. FEMALE GRAMMAR SCHOOL RESTORATION PROJECT Anticipation over the restoration project involving the old abandoned Female Grammar School located on North Center Street in Pottsville, PA. Grows daily. It was hoped that work would begin at the end of January. However due to governmental regulations concerning the removal of asbestos and lead paint, the project has been delayed. Hopefully clean-up work by a Schuylkill County Prison work detail will begin within the next few days and the problem with the asbestos and lead paint removal will be corrected. BLOOD DRIVE UNDERWAY! HSSC has started a blood drive. No, we are not in competition with the Red Cross. HSSC is seeking "new blood" in the form of people willing to get involved. Currently there may be 1 to 6 openings for Directors of th Board. Committee people are also needed. If you have a special interest or talent and want to come involved please contact the editor of the newsletter via e-mail or drop a note to the HSSC at 14 North Third Street, Pottsville,Pa 17901. DONATIONS NEEDED HSSC is always looking for interesting Schuylkill County memorabilia or artifacts. If you have any old High School Year Books, please consider giving them to the HSSC. That goes for old county photographs, Church Directories, programs, and other ‘dust collectors." WHAT DO YOU WANT THE HSSC TO BECOME? The HSSC wants to serve the needs of the community. General Joulwan was gracious enough to promise his collection of Army memorabia to HSSC. This should be a great asset to the County and to the Society. What do YOU want the HSSC to focus on in the future? Immigration, ethnic settlements, civil war, Indian settlements, Sports, musical talent, etc. Your comments are eagerly welcomed. Send to the editor via e-mail at jrzane@bigfoot.com or the President Leo Ward at Llward@voicenet.com You can always drop a note at 14 North Third Street, Pottsville,PA 17901.
