ANNUAL D.C. HENNING BANQUET HELD IN SHENANDOAH APRIL 8th

Despite inclement weather, a group of approximately 40 peopleattended the HSSC's banquet at St. Michael's Hall in Shenandoah. Prior to the dinner the group toured St. Michael's Church a Ukrainian-American landmark. St. Stephen's, a Slavic- Catholic church, was also toured. Many comments were heard that the format of a pre=banqurt tour was a great idea which should continue. The HSSC promised earlier this year to become more visible throughout the county. Earlier this year a monthly meeting was held in Orwigsburg and more travels are anticipated in the future. The banquet speaker called in sick earlier in the morning, but HSSC was lucky to have Director Peter Yasenchak fill in at the last moment, with his own extemporaneous thoughts, capped off with some ethnic songs

CONTRACTOR BIDS UNSEALED AND READ!

Bids on the renovation of the Female Grammar School were opened at the office of Director Edward Brennan. Miller Brothers, a Schuylkill County business, had the low bid followed by Creswell Brothers, another local business. Both bids were immediately rushed to the architect for review and input. It is anticipated a contract will be signed in mid-May and the work will finally begin. If you have payments to make on the pledge or wish to donate, please send your tax-deductible contribution to the HSSC headquarters. No amount is too little or too late. By the end of June you should be seeing contractors hard at work making History come alive. The old Center Street School will not follow in the footsteps of the Garfield School.

MUNSELL'S 1881 HISTORY OF SCHUYLKILL COUNTY

Following the huge success of the republication of the 1890 County Directory, the HSSC Board of Directors has decided to republish the 1881 History of Schuylkill County by Munsell. A solicitation will be sent to members this summer and the book should be ready for Christmas gift-giving. As HSSC books are extremely popular, the Board has authorized a contract with Visa so the books may be easily purchased. The price of the book will be approximately $57.50.

SORRY FOLKS! ONCE A MAN TWICE A BOY POSTPONED

Reluctantly, the HSSC Board of Director will not be in a position to feature the Joe Lucas one-man play "Once a Man, Twice a Boy." this June. However, it is hoped the production can be held later in the year. Joe Lucas is a Nativity graduate who was raised in Branchdale. It certainly will be a sell out.
