He married Francis Skinner Aug 22, 1770 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ. Notes for Oliver Captain Drake: Much information has been compiled about the founder of Draketown, Oliver Drake. family tradition held that his family was related to the celebrated English navigator, Sir Francis Drake, though not direct descendants. the history of Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, 1882, mentions a connection but states that "no authentic records have yet been found to prove the tradition true further than that the Drakes were among the early English settlers of' this part of New Jersey." the first documented ancestor of Oliver Drake was Captain Francis Drake, who was born about 1615 and who married Mary Walker, born about 1625. she was from Hampton Rockingham, New Hampshire. their 8th great grand daughter, Mary Thomas Crlsmore, has documented the captain's early land grants in NewHampshire and his civic duties in NewJersey. he was a surveyor of the highways and later conducted a tavern, as well as being a constable, and justice of the peace. his children were George andElizabeth who married Hugh Dunn, and Rev. John Drake. The genealogy records of Mrs.Frank Crismore, descendant from Alice's son David, indicated that Oliver Drake married on 22 aug., 1770, in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., N.J. to Frances Skinner, born 23 oct., 1744, in Piscataway, and died after 1788 in Draketown. Oliver was both a miller and a farmer in lower Turkeyfoot Township. He and his wife were buried in theJersey Church Cemetery, though their graves are no longer marked. On pages 2 & 3 OF the boob "Draketown, Past and Present" there are two maps showing the plot of Oliver Drake's 257 acres in Lower Turkeyfoot Township. In 1777 Somerset County was divided into three companies during the Revolutionary War. the 4thCompany(Turkeyfoot) lists captain as William Black and 1st lieutenant as Oliver Drake, Drake was commissioned 20 sept., 1781, as captain, first co., 3rd batallion, Bedford County Militia. Oliver was on the tax assessment in 1772 with two acres, 1773 with 100 acres, 1779 with 300 acres, 1787 with 100 acres, one horse, two cows and in 1792 he was taxed for a still.
