It is interesting to note that on Conrad Dieffenbacher’s mother family, the Reinmold’s, his great grandfather, Hans Jacob Reinmold (1653-1694), married Anna Margaretha Dieffenbacher (1653-1693), daughter of Regina (Zoern) and Stefen Dieffenbacher (1632-1708). This makes Stefen and Regina his 2nd great-grandparents on both his paternal and maternal families.

A DOUBLE SURPRISE-

On Thursday, May 10, the friends of Rev. C.L. Earle, of Colley, paid him a surprise visit, it being the occasion of his 83rd birthday.

By ten o'clock over sixty had assembled, each carrying a well filled basket. A splendid dinner was set forth and the self invited guests were just about to set down, when, walking with the elasticity of renewed youth and vigor, Mr. John Dieffenbach and Mrs. Caroline Suber, stepped to the centre of the floor and requested the white haired shepherd to pronounce the words which should forever cause their loving hearts to beat as one. Rev. Earle was equal to the occasion, and after satisfying himself that both bride and groom were of the proper age he tied the mystic tie.

Dinner followed, and after dinner a serenade by a hastily organized band. The groom responded in a good natured and humorous speech and the hungry muscians were in their turn feasted. A gentleman who was present said he never laughed so much in his life as at this surprise-birth-day-wedding feast.

May the Rev. Earle live to enjoy many such occasions, and the the bride and groom pass down the hill of life 'mid sunset's ruddiest glow is the wish of the Review.

The Sullivan Review Sept. 21, 1899

BURNED TO DEATH-Mrs. John Dieffenbach, an aged lady living about a mile south of Dushore was burned to death Monday, September 18, by her clothing catching fire while she was getting breakfast. Her husband had lighted the fire and again went to sleep, lying on a cot in the kitchen, and was startled by a cry of pain, and awakened to find his wife lying on the floor, with her clothing all ablaze. He extinguished the flames and summoned help, but her injuries were too serious to permit of her recovery and she lingered in great pain until about midnight. She recovered sufficiently to explain how it happened, saying that her apron caugtht while she was at work around the stove, and her whole clothing was quickly ablaze. The funeral and interment was at Old Zion's Lutheran church, Wednesday, September 20, 1899. Mrs. Dieffenbach's maiden name was Caroline Hoffa, and she was born and lived all her life in Cherry Township. Her first husband was Benjamin Suber, who died about 15 years ago. About eleven years ago she became the wife of John Dieffenbach, and the two old people have lived very happily and comfortable together since. She was 72 years, five months and one day old, and besides her aged husband leaves a number of sons and daughters by her first husband to mourn her sad and untimley death.

The Sullivan Review

August 27, 1903

John Dieffenbach, a former well known resident of Sullivan County, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Julius Vogel, in Sayre, Saturday evening, August 22, aged 90 years, four months and 23 days. Deceased was the grandson of Conrad Dieffenbacher (as the name was then spelled) who was born in Baden, Germany, in 1743, and emigrated to America in 1764, and settled at Faulkner Swamp, in the southern part of Pennsylvania. Among the sons of this sturdy German emigrant was Jacob Dieffenbach who settled in Columbia Co., and where the subject of this sketch was born, March 29, 1813. In 1829 Jacob Dieffenbach came with his family to Cherry township, Sullivan County, and became one of the prominent citizens and successful farmers of this section. It was here, within the limits of what is now Dushore borough, and in Cherry township, that John Dieffenbach grew to manhood, and here he married Elizabeth Hoffa, and to them were born nine children, as follows: Hannah, who married John H. Lawrence, and is now deceased; Jacob, who died in infancy; Daniel Emanuel, now a resident of Dushore; John S., who became First Lieutenant of Company D, One Hundred and Forty-first Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and died on the field in 1862; Henry S., who was also a soldier, and who died shortly after the close of the Civil War; Catharine A.,now the wife of Julius Vogel, of Sayre; Clinton A., a prominent resident and farmer of Cherry Township; George F, who resides at Millville, Columbia county, and Elizabeth, wife of George Heverly, of Sayre.

From his youth up John Dieffenbach took a prominent part in the affairs of his

town and county and held various offices of trust and honor. He was twice elected county commissioner, and for many years was the captain of the Cherry township militia, being the last man to command the military forces of eastern Sullivan under the old militia system which expired with the beginning of the war of the rebellion.

A number of years after the death of his first wife John Dieffenbach married Mrs. Caroline Hoffa Suber, a sister of his first wife. She died a number of years ago, and since then he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Vogel, and removed with them from Mildred to Sayre, in April of this year.

The remains of the aged patriarch were brought to Dushore and funeral services were held in the German Reformed church on Tuesday, the interment taking place in Old Zion's (Thrasher's) cemetery.

The funeral was very largely attended by the numerous relatives and friends. With his death and burial one more of the old land marks is gone, and almost the last link in the chain connecting the early history of the county with the twentieth century is severed.

The Sullivan Review June 11, 1908

The funeral of Mrs. P.E. Dieffenbach, wife of Henry Dieffenbach of Colley, took place on Tuesday, June 2. The sermon was preached in the Evangelical church by the pastor, Rev. H.R. Wilkes, of which Mrs. Dieffenbach was a faithful member. The text was taken from a part of 1 Cor. 15:6. Mr. Wilkes spoke very highly of the departed. The friends sorrow not as those who have no hope but expect to meet on the resurrection morning.

Mrs. Dieffenbach was 79 years, 7 months and 25 days old. She is survived by a husband, and daughter, Mrs. Eva K. Jacobs, of Craston, Nebraska, and one brother, Cost Coller of Nebraska. She was preceeded to the spirit world by her first husband, Asa H. Haynart. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Colley, the church being crowed.

The Sullivan Review: 27 Oct. 1881

Mr. and Mrs. Amos REESER went to Milton on Monday, having been called thereby the death of a sister of Mrs. REESER, a Mrs. FULMER. (Susan).

The Sullivan Review November 18, 1909

Mrs. Rebecca Reeser, nee Dieffenbach, was born in Columbia county, August 8, 1826. On the first day of January, 1846, she was married to Amos Reeser. She died at the home of her daughter last Saturday, November 13, 1909, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 5 days.

After a long, busy and useful like she died as she lived --honored, trusted and loved. Her life was completed, if work all done and well done constitutes completion.

Deceased was one of the early settlers of Sullivan County, having come here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Dieffenbach, in the year of 1829.

Amos Reeser, her husband, was prominent in business circles, having at times managed all the hotels in Dushore except the Carroll House. In the spring of 1886 he retired from active business on account of poor health. Mr. Reeser died Sept. 10, 1897.

Unto this union seven children were born; Angeline, now Mrs. Hiram Nichols, of Sciotavale; Lyman, who died when 18 months old; Vilina, wife of G.H. Honnetter of this place; Emeline who is deceased; Mary, who is the widow of Barney Weiss, of Waverly; Bernice, wife of William McHenry, of Dushore, at whose home Mrs. Reeser died; and John D, of town.

Besides the above surviving children she leaves one brother, Henry Dieffenbach, of Colley, who is the last of thirteen children.

The funeral services were held at the house Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. A. Bachofer of the Lutheran church officiating. The remains were taken to the Fairview cemetery where interment was made.

The pall bearers, five of whom were the husbands of the deceased's granddaughters, were as follows: G.H. Messersmith, of Dushore, G.M Pike and Fred Weiss, of Waverly, Harry Cortright of Sayre, and David Cook and Paul McHenry of this place.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Mary Weiss, Mr. and Mrs. G.N. Pike, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weiss and Mrs. Maria McHenry, all of Waverly, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cortright of Sayre.

On reaching his majority, he conducted a hotel at the Long Pond or Lake Ganoga, later the Ellis hotel on the Loyalsock where he was born. From this place he moved to Dushore where he conducted a hotel until 1886.(Streby History)

 The Sullivan Review

September 16, 1897

It is our sorrowful duty to chronicle the death of another of our aged citizens, that of Amos Reeser, who died on Friday, last, aged 74 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Mr. Reeser was born in Cherry township, on the place at present occupied by Percival Wentzel, and had been a resident of Cherry and Dushore all his life. For many years he was engaged in the hotel business and only retired when advancing years made it impossible for him to give that careful attention to the many details of the business that made him a success.

His aged wife and five children survive him. The children are Mrs. Hiram Nichols, of Sayre; Mrs. Geo. Honnetter, of this place; Mrs. B. S. Weiss, of Waverly; Mrs. Wm. McHenry, of Sciota Vale, and Mr. John D. Reeser, of this place. Another daughter, Mrs. Wm. Scureman, of Wilkes-Barre, died about a year ago.

The funeral services were held at the home of the deceased on Sunday, all of his children being present. The interment was made at Bahr’s cemetery

53.  CHRISTIANA KISNER  was born October 09, 1839, and died November 06, 1887.  She married GOTLIEB BARTCH April 29, 1858.  He was born 1828, and died January 03, 1900.

The Sullivan Gazette

November 10, 1887

Mrs. Christina Bartch, of Cherry township, aged 48 years, committed suicide on Sunday, between the hours of 11 o'clock, a.m., and 4 o'clock, p.m., by hanging herself with a rope from a joice in the second story of the house. The particulars are as follows:

Seven years ago Mrs. Bartch, her husband Godleib Bartch and seven children lived on a farm in Cherry township, about four miles east of Dushore. Mr. Bartch had a fine farm and good buildings and was in good circumstances. He borrowed large sums of money and went west seven years ago next December leaving his wife and seven children some of whom where very young at the time.

It is reported that he is now living in Missouri with a woman who left her husband in the same locality at about the same time that Bartch left.

The property was sold to pay the money Bartch had borrowed before leaving. This left the family nearly destitute. The oldest son went west soon afterward, since which time Mrs. Bartch has tried to keep the remainder of the family together and support them with the assistance of her neighbors, her oldest daughter, and relief from the overseers of the poor.

About two years ago, three of the younger children aged at that time about 5, 7, and 9 years, respectively, were taken from her by her oldest son and taken West to their father, leaving her with but one child, a girl now about 14 years of age, who is a cripple with a feeble mind. Her son Will having gone to work for himself, and her oldest daughter was working out doing what she could toward her mother's support. The loss of her younger children prayed heavily upon the fond mother's heart. Of late she has been living in a house on one of the farms of George Albert, about one mile north of her former home, with the daughter above spoken of.

On last Thursday she came to town with some of her neighbors and on her return spoke of her troubles; on Friday she went to the residence of Adam Dieffenbach who lives in sight and within 80 rods of her house, and asked of Mrs. Dieffenbach permission to come into the house and after entering she showed strong evidences of insanity. She stated to Mrs. Dieffenbach that if at any time on arising in the morning they saw her curtains down and no smoke coming from the chimney, they should look after her as they might expect something wrong. On Sunday morning several of the neighbors called to see her and found her insane. Amos Kisner, her brother, was the last one to leave the house. As he left at about 11 o'clock a.m., she said to him that he never would ever see her again.

At about four 'clock her son, Wm. F. Bartch, entered the house and found the feeble minded girl alone, crying, He asked her about her mother but could get no information from her. He went upstairs to look for her and found her as above stated. The child was taken to the neighbors and cared for. Whether she saw her mother or not and whether she would realize the situation, in her condition of mind, are questions that cannot be answered.

Coroner Waddell was summoned who impaneled a jury and held an inquest on Monday morning. Their verdict was in accordance with the facts here given.

Mrs. Bartch was the daughter of the late Wm. Kisner, of Cherry and leaves a large number of relatives in this section. Suicide is not justifiable under any circumstances, yet it is not surprising that Mrs. Bartch sought to relieve her terrible agonies by taking her own life.

The remains were interred in Bahr's cemetery Tuesday.

He was born in Cherry township, February 13, 1849. On May 22, 1869 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma C. Suber, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. David Suber, also of Cherry township.

In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Kisner together with the David Suber family moved to Kansas where they made their home.

On November 11, 1870, Mr. Kisner took up a homestead, and has lived on the same farm until the time of his death.

DEATH CLAIMS EARLY SETTLER

Jefferson Kisner, Last of Early Settlers Living on Homestead at Time of His Death, Laid to Rest.

Friends within the Glen Elder Community and especially his neighbors of the Granite Creek Neighborhood were grieved last Thursday morning when it was learned that Jefferson Kisner had passed away in his home west of town late the preceding evening.  Having lived upon his homestead since the spring of 1870, this venerable old gentleman had accumulated the respect of his acquaintances to which nearly seventy years of unselfish living has been contributed.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday at two o’clock in the afternoon.  Interment was in the Granite Creek cemetery by the side of his wife.  The services were conducted by Ray Borgaard.

Jeff Kisner was born February 13, 1849 in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania and passed away at his home near Waconda Springs, February 10, 1937.  Had he lived until Saturday, February 13, he would have been eighty-eight years of age.  He was married to Emma C. Suver, May 22, 1869.  His wife preceded him in death June 3, 1930.

He came to Mitchell County, Kansas, in the spring of 1870 and homesteaded on the farm, bringing his family November 11, 1870 where he has resided ever since.

He is among the last of the old settlers to have been living on his homestead at the time of his death.

Mr. Kisner was the last of a family of eleven children.

The two children born to Mr. And Mrs. Kisner are Mrs. Ida Coble of Glen Elder and Ernest of the home; who with Mr. George Coble, and Mrs. Edna Randall, a granddaughter, he left to mourn his loss besides nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Mr. Kisner was a loyal, kindly neighbor ever ready to help anyone in time of trouble or stress.  A friend to everyone in the community and liked by everybody.

In the early settlement of the community, he united with the United Brethren who held classes in the neighborhood.  After they broke up he never transferred his membership to any other place.

He retained his keen mind to the very last and was always interested in community affairs.

The same verse that applied to his loving wife may well be applied to him.

Do all the good you can

By all the means you can

In all the ways you can

As long as ever you can.

Notes for EMMA C. SUBER:

The Glen Elder Sentinel

June 11, 1930

Emma C. Suver was born at Dushore, Sullivan Co, Pa., October 20, 1854.

She was united in marriage to J. Kisner, May 22, 1869.

She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Coble, in Glen Elder, Kansas, June 3, 1930.

With the passing of Mrs. Kisner, Tuesday, this community again pauses in respectful awe and admiration over the events of our pioneer state builders.  Like the pages of a thrilling story is the scroll of this simple quiet woman’s life.

A year after their marriage the young Kisner family with their baby daughter, Ida, and the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Suver and family, joined a colony of home-steaders who were leaving Pennsylvania for a western home.  In November 1870, they settled in the Waconda Springs neighborhood.  Mrs. Kisner was one of a family of six young people, and the freedom and experiences of these pioneer prairie days makes good telling. In her family one brother only, C.W. Suver, of Ellensburg, Washington, is living, and his frail health kept him from attending the funeral.

At this Kansas homestead, the second child, a son, Ernest W. was born.  He has always lived on this homestead, the place of his birth, and during these later years, he ahs been a dutiful son as well as a most loving, thoughtful, devoted companion to his aging parents.  This relationship between Mother and Son is most beautiful and to him as well as to her daughter and granddaughter and her lovely life-companion, of sixty-one years, the sympathy of this community goes out today in a very special way.

Mrs. Kisner has been a home-lover and home-maker; a loyal kindly neighbor, even ready to help in time of joy and stress; a friend to every one in the community, a woman with a quiet reserve and “with resources within herself” that kept her sane, content and unafraid through hard years and years of prosperity.  Her hearty laugh has cheered many a neighbor and passerby throughout the years.  In early Kansas days all were neighbors.

The simple maxim in the old West household might have hung in Mrs. Kisner’s home.

“Do all the good you can,

By all the means you can,

In all the ways you can,

At all the times you can,

As long as ever you can.”

In her girlhood home in PA, Mrs. Kisner had become a member of the Reformed Lutheran Church.  After coming to Kansas, she united with the United Brethren, who held classes in the neighborhood.  Later when these classes disbanded, her help and interest were ever freely giving to the Christian Church in Glen Elder, and today this church feels that her vacant place will be hard to fill.

With Tennyson we reverently say,

“Our little systems have their day,

They have their day and cease to be,

They are but broken lights of Thee,

And Thou, O God, are more than they.”

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church on Thursday, June 5, at 2 p.m. Rev. E. O. Sweany in charge.  Sadly and reverently, another grave is opened and closed in the Granite Creek cemetery, near the old homestead on which she had lived for sixty years.

His mother passed away June 2, 1930 and his father died February 10, 1937.  Since the death of his parents, Ernest has lived alone on the farm, with the exception of the past 3 winters, which were spent in the home of his sister, Mrs. Ida Coble.

He was a friend to all and always to help his neighbors in time of need.

His life occupation was farming.

He leaves to mourn his passing his sister, Mrs. Ida C. Coble, one niece, Mrs. Edna Randall; and her husband, Mason Randall.

Borne down and weary with the storms

Notes for JOHN HORATIO LAWRENCE:

The Sullivan Review January 24, 1907

John H. Lawrence, whose illness was mentioned last week, died at the residence of his son, W.J. Lawrence, in Kane, McKean county, Thursday, Januray 17, 1907, aged 73 years, nine months and six days. The remains were brought to the residence of his son, Charles T. Lawrence , in this place, Friday evening, and on Sunday, January 20, funeral services were held at the Evangelical church, interment being at Bahr's Hill.

John Lawrence was born in Cherry township April 11, 1833, and was a son of William Lawrence, who came to this county from Northumberland in 1828. The subject of this sketch married Miss Hannah Dieffenbach, who died 33 years ago, and to them were born twelve children, nine of whom are living: Mrs. D.W. Pealer, of Lopez; Mrs. D.H. Lorah, of Sonestown; William J. Lawrence, of Kane; Charles T. Lawrence, of Dushore; O.H. Lawrence, of Waverly; Mrs. J. P. Little, of Stockton, California; Mrs. D. McDonald, of White Salmon, Washington; Mrs. A.J. Bradley, of Laporte, and Frank Lawrence, of Chicago. All were present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Little and Mrs. McDonald. William Lawrence, of East Canton, the only surviving brother, was also present. A sister, Mrs. Freeman Wilcox, of New Albany died last week.

John H. Lawrence had been prominent in the affairs of eastern Sullivan county for a generation. He was a farmer and at one time was engaged in lumbering and store keeping. He was frequently called upon to hold public office, and had filled about all the local offices, one time and another, when, in 1865, he was chosen Sheriff of Sullivan county. About 1890 he became a resident of Dushore borough, and in 1893 was elected justice of the peace, in which office he was serving his third term at the time of his death.

Deceased was a man who made friends wherever he went. Kindly and jovial in disposition, he had a smile an a joke for all, and under all there was a certain gravity and dignity that betokened more serious thought. He will be greatly missed from our streets and his death is greatly regretted by all.
